I read about Sunflower Days in a recent summer piece on Madison, and was happy that my Madison…read morevisit coincided with opening weekend of this year's sunflower bloom. The sunflower bloom is definitely worth the trip and parking lot traffic and walk up the hill- it's simply amazing. Over 500,000 sunflowers will bloom in a one week period! There's a bit of an uphill climb to get from the parking areas to the sunflowers and the farmland, so expect that. This is a free event, so feel free to donate to the conservancy, cheapskates! There's as much or as little walking here as you want. Get a few pics of the sunflowers and go home, or walk around the whole sun field, walk past the oak savannah and prairie, or walk around the whole farm (which is quite a hike)! Bring water, bring a blanket, bring a picnic!

To be honest, I have only ever been to the Pope Farm Conservancy for the sunflowers. But it seems like a beautiful place to stop year round for a hike or to cross country ski. It gets crowded during their sunflower days, so it's best to go during off hours. The Conservancy does an excellent job marking off parking spots and directing traffic. They have plenty of volunteers to answer questions and everything appears to be very well run and organized. People come to take family photos, have a picnic, or just go for a nice stroll to watch the sunset over a beautiful field of sunflowers. However, leave your dog at home because pets are not allowed. The sunflower days attraction is free however donations are accepted. Definitely worth a trip to the far west side of Madison.

I really don't often give 5 Star Reviews, but this dog park deserves it. The Park is huge!! There…read moreare double gates to enter and exit so no pooch gets loose, the whole park is fenced in so you don't have to worry about your pup doing a Steve McQueen "The Great Escape" unless he/she rides a motorcycle to jump the fence. Volunteers leave water dishes and gallons of water so pups can enjoy a fresh drink. There are toys galore; left for you to play fetch. Follow one of the many paths with your four legged friend. Get tired, no worries! Just relax on one of the many benches. Think your pup is Top Dog? Try the Dog Agility course. There are tunnels to choose from, a teeter board, weave poles, dogwalk, ladder and more! There is even a smaller fenced in area for the smaller pups who don't want to run with the Big Dogs. When your dogs are tired you can relax out of the sun in one of the many seats in the Pavilion. This is all made possible by the volunteers and donors whose names are listed on a sponsor board. When you visit leave only footprints, not doggie donations...puppy poop bags and refuse containers are plentifully provided. This review was actually written by my Boxer Kids Kelsey and Woodson. I typed this for them because they don't have opposable thumbs.

I intentionally went looking for this park with my service dog today and I was not disappointed…read more It's a beautiful park that offers clean open spaces, trails, grass, a fenced in area furry large and small dogs, interesting people, and more fun than my little 20 lbs of fur could stand! He's snoring his head off right now after running around like a madman in the small stuff area with his new BFF Charlie the Corgi! He also had fun in the big dog area with Dozer who really wanted to play! It was nice to be around people who were attentive to their fur babies vs walking trails with headphones on ignoring dogs that run wild in wooded off leash parks. I recently had a bad encounter with dogs jumping on me and dashing at my smaller dog. He is my service dog because I have a neurological disorder that causes me to lose my balance and fall. It's really irritating when people let their big dogs dash, run, and jump throughout a park and they are nowhere near to correct the dog. In this park, that can't happen because the area is more of an exercise area. It's enclosed but large enough for the dogs to really have fun chasing, tumbling, and running. The large dog area has a few challenge obstacles inside but nothing to obstruct ball tossing or free play. Within the play area, there are no trees for sugar to hide and dash at the unsuspecting passersby. Every parent can't see his/her baby and hold them accountable for good behavior! Outside the enclosures, there are many trails for those who want 1:1 encounters with their fur babies and nature. I walked the trail first with my dog. We love walking along trails. I give him plenty of time to sniff everything and I let him direct the adventure. Then, we went to the fenced area for some socializing (a.k.a. play). He had a great time and so did I. There are signs up that indicate there are fees to use this park. I'm not sure if that's still the case. So check it out before you go. The gates were up and open when I arrived but if there's a fee, I would say it's well worth it! This park was clean and attractive. It would be a great place for families, couples, singles, disabled, and dogs!!! We felt centered and calm when we left and can't wait to visit again!
