The Badger State Trail runs from Madison WI to Illinois, where is meets up with the Jane Addams trail that proceeds south to Freeport, IL. The Badger is a beautiful trail but one word of caution, there's a $5 daily fee or yearly fee required to ride it. I didn't have a fiver on me so I rode without paying, but I did see a trail worked that likely checked bikers for payment slips. So..be careful. I rode the path from south of Monticello, north past Belleville WI and back. This stretch of path includes the Stewart Tunnel, which was easily one of the most interesting things I've seen on any bike path I've ever ridden. Built in the 1880's, this tunnel is about four tenths of a mile long and contains no lighting inside. Once you lose the grace of the light coming from one end of the tunnel, you'll be in complete darkness until you catch light from the other side. Depending on how fast you ride, that might take a couple minutes. I used the flashlight app on my phone to illuminate the ground as I didn't want to hit something and take a spill in the dark. That and I went slowly, just to be on the safe side. If you go through the tunnel I highly advise you go slow and use a flashlight or light shedding device. That I experienced, the trail was flat and smooth in here, and nothing except the brick walls surrounded me. The rest of the trail is kept up okay. I like a trail that goes from town to town with country in between, so the Badger kept me happy. I'm looking forward to doing more stretches of this trail in the future and hope to see reviews from other riders who've done different sections. Cheers.

Overall pretty easy terrain in my opinion and mostly flat with some small ups and downs. The trails dual as mountain bike trails so be on the lookout as you may need to step aside. I had to do this a free times but if it was busier it may be a bit of a distraction and impact your hike some.

This 34 mile trail on a crushed limestone base is an ideal place to walk and to bike. It is a…read morestate trail but it does not require a fee. Given it is a former railway the path is relatively flat. In some sections it is shared by horses or there is a parallel horse trails. It appears that in winter they allow ATVs on this trail. There are a number of parking areas along the bike path that make for easy access. One of the best in the southern section is the Juneau town park which has some very nice bathrooms and a small shelter with picnic tables. Overall a nice trail.

Prices for repairs are competitive with the Madison bike shops. Most recently, when the shifter on my bike was giving my problems, they found a replacement and got my back on the road in less than 24 hours. (Unlike the Trek Store on the West side that was unable to address this same problem, but that is a story for another review). The staff members are friendly and knowledgeable. They have made some minor adjustments to my daughter's bike at no charge on several occasions. The owner does seem to be on the phone a lot, so several times when I've dropped in I've had to wait for him to finish his call to get helped.
