We lucked in though as Maison Bleue Le Bistrot was able to slot us in with no fuss before it began to fill up about half an hour later. The addition of 'Le Bistrot' doesn't signify any difference between here and the original restaurant (or, really, its involvement with Home either) as the menu is pretty much identical. It's a pleasant location though and the service was exemplary so no complaints there. Watch out for the Eleve wine as it's very drinkable. As we visited over a week ago I've managed to forget what either of us ate but there were certainly no issues at the time.

They'd only been open 4 days and it was a Tuesday so there was no problem getting a table - I passed by on Saturday night and saw the place packed so this is clearly no longer the case! Weirdly, the 4 couples in the venue were placed in the back, in 4 tables uncomfortably close to each other, while the rest of the restaurant was empty. When the SO arrived he immediately asked to be moved. He's an inch off being medically a giant so the set up didn't suit him at all. The manager made it quite difficult and I assumed the rest of the tables had been booked out, I scolded him for causing a fuss. In the 2 and a bit hours we were there 3 more tables were filled, half the place was empty so I really didn't understand the seating choice nor the reaction when we asked to be moved (especially considering that it was darn obvious he would have had trouble where we were). Anyhoo, all that aside, we had a lovely meal and a pleasant meal. The menu is convincingly French with a Scottish twist. For starters I had escargot with fried foie gras which was delicious, earthy and had a beautifully strong taste. Across the table it was haggis balls and I quote 'oh sorry I didn't offer you any, I was too excited to eat them'. For mains I had the 'Bleue- blaise' which was fantastic, whole shellfish, fish fillets and bread with garlic butter in a lobster bisque. Meanwhile chicken creole was the all of the day with my dining partner and he was happy enough. We skipped out on dessert but I had a very drinkable dessert wine which I would go back for. The decor is a bit Ted Baker autumn/winter 14/15 if you catch my drift. If not think florals, teal and blues with a dab of purple. The seats are cosy though and this colour scheme works, making the place look both demure and bright (so well done interior design person). The wait staff are very friendly, and very attentive though not overly so. We'll head back at some stage but probably request a booth or Windows seat to avoid being stuck somewhere one of us doesn't fit.

It's a nice,…read morealmost cafe-like atmosphere in the day, and much more bustling with sport on the telly in the evenings. The disappointing thing is that food seems to have gone downhill. It used to have a small-ish but reasonably priced and tasty menu of pub standards. The menu has been revamped at some point in the last few months, and both mains we ordered last time (a hot dog and nachos) were very disappointing, and a big step down in quality to what we've gotten used to there. On the positive side, there's a good range of drinks, and neither the food or drinks are expensive. Still, I'd be wary of eating there again.

What did it for me is the art deco vibe. I'm quickly realising that I love all things art deco/art nouveau/arts & crafts and it's enough to draw me in anywhere. So, a few weeks ago, we finally went. The bottled drink selection was very good- though they could probably benefit from a drinks menu somewhere. The staff were friendly and nudged me in the direction of a better brew when I was uncertain. The decor was generally as expected. Unfortunately this was a Friday night and I wonder if the same crowd frequents this place on a Friday night as on a Saturday. We were faced with chats from drunken older men who had stopped in at 5 and were still there at 9:30/10. There were girls who looked liked they were on a proper night out. There were guys there to oogle said girls. It felt like we were in the city center and not tucked away in an art deco pub in Morningside. However, I hear it's much better after work and I hear the food's pretty decent, so I will give it another chance to wow me away from my other Morningside favourites.

But it all came crashing down at the end when I went to pay and the waiter tried to guilt me into tipping - which is not a common practice in the UK. He hovered over me as I put my card in the machine and the dreaded percentage options showed up on the screen as well as "No Tip" and "Custom Amount." I felt I was back in the U.S., where there's quite a lot of controversy about these screens but at least the staff usually look away at that time. This guy helpfully explained that I could tip - or not tip. Yeah, thanks. OK, buddy. No tip for you. I should have gone to Wetherspoon's.

Their website looked really upmarket, with promises of amazing service and dedication to preparing the best and freshest food etc etc, so I was expecting it to be quite pricey. I wouldn't have minded paying twice as much as we did for the food, if not more; our meal was that good. We went for their 3 Course Set Lunch offer which will set you back a grand total of £6.50 a head (?!) and this place is now my favourite Italian restaurant in Edinburgh. It's nothing fancy, but then it doesn't try to be: from the second you walk in you immediately pick up on the family-run, authentic vibe and it makes you feel really relaxed. I love italian food and I've been searching all over Edinburgh for that perfect little local Italian place, the one you go to when you can't be bothered to cook but still want to go somewhere you know will be good yet cheap. I've lived here for 4 years now, and I think I can stop looking.
