FoodWorks is a social enterprise that helps at-risk youth. It is a catering business that teaches…read moreyouth cooking skills to help them find employment in the culinary field. It is a part of Operation Come Home, whose mission is "preventing homeless youth from becoming homeless adults." I attended a work function where the lunch was catered by FoodWorks. It was a very solid brown bagged lunch, which literally came in a brown paper bag, lol. We got to select our sandwich, salad and a cookie, ahead of the event, from a set menu. On the day of the event, it was packed in a brown paper bag with our name on it. I got the roast beef sandwich, the North African chickpea salad, and the chocolate chip zucchini cookie. The roast beef sandwich came on a pretzel bun. It came with cheese, lettuce and tomatoes. The bun was a bit dry and dense, but otherwise the sandwich was good. I was surprised by the spiciness of the salad. I enjoyed it, but wasn't expecting the fiery kick. It had chickpeas, carrots, red peppers and dried barberries. The cookie was tasty and looked like my own misshapen homemade cookies ;) There was a lot of leftover food at the end of the event, so we were encouraged to take some home. I grabbed a Greek quinoa salad to go. It was delicious and had quinoa, onions, bell peppers, grape tomatoes, sliced green olives and feta cheese. Not sure what the pricing is, but I love that proceeds go back into Operation Come Home to help the youth. They also have a storefront on Gladstone Ave that sells frozen meals and items like jams and spices from local businesses, including other social enterprises, and also a cafe in the Bayview Yards. The truth is, when I hired these movers, they didn't break anything, they didn't damage much. Oh there was some dirt on the couch, and the dresser had a couple new scratches, but like he said, it was already kind of scratched. But if you want a psychologically traumatic move, this is your ticket. Obfuscate, Humiliate, Manipulate: OHM. OHM is like the company mantra. Say it like you'd say it in bikram Saturday morning. We didn't get an honest answer from these losers all day. And in the end, they let us know that terrorism truly does begin at home, by verbally attacking us, revealing the depth of their own insecurity. They held our last possession ransom, and not for money you see - no, they were paid - they demanded to be paid - before lifting a finger. It was our dignity they were after. Beg us, they said. Beg us to bring that thing, that whateveritwas, that thing you can't carry by yourself, plead with us to have mercy and carry it off the truck and into your house. You think you are better than us, but we have the power here. And apart from all that, the two monkeys had never seen the inside of a real moving truck. Two high frosh with a uhaul demonstrate as much skill as these twats. Was this review weird? You bet it was. I'm a pretty boring person, and I couldn't have made it up. This really happened.

AVOID, AVOID, - Long but worth the read. Good reviews mean nothing if you're not taken care of when…read morethings go wrong. I liked my contact in the office and went with my gut. July 10th, our move started well -- the team inspected all the walls both before loading and at the new house before unloading. Good start but unfortunately, went downhill. The move took as long as our move from Montreal two years earlier, including a 2 1/2-hour drive. This move was a 5 minute drive from where we were living. It became clear that our antique furniture was mishandled: My buffet was gouged and a piece broken off the back. The roller ball from an antique table leg fell off and was lost. I asked them to check the truck; the response was "It's dark." I asked them to let me know the next day -- never heard back. My husband's desk had a piece broken off. Too many things to list. Several other items were broken. Boxes were well-labeled, but mostly ignored. Here's where some of them ended up: Cutlery box office upstairs Pantry items furnace room Fancy glasses upstairs hallway Bathroom box office upstairs Master closet items office upstairs Office supplies kitchen counter Living room décor upstairs office cupboard Bedroom furnace room When I couldn't find my cutlery box and asked the team leader for help, he literally said: "Nope, it's late. We're done. Deal with the office." That summed up the attitude perfectly. I still tipped them and said it would have been more. Some boxes weren't found for a long time. One of the movers even said, "It was a bad day." -- It added so much stress especially that boxes couldn't be located. One imoportant box labelled Bedroom wasn't found for over 3 days. It was finally found in the furnace room behind a table that the box wasn't visible. The Aftermath I followed the office's request and sent a detailed email with pictures, copied many people. Then... silence. July 23 - I asked if they could check for a missing box. No response. September - told they'd send someone assess the furniture repair,and did but then nothing. By then, I had already followed my bank's advice after being refused asking to a partial paymenht, submitted all documentation, and they agreed I was justified -- so the payment was reversed. That finally got the company's attention. When they contacted me in November they said they couldn't resolve anything "until payment was made." I told them I would love to pay my but no one had gotten in touch to actually resolve anything or answer questions.. That was the last straw and I spoke with an owner, who was shocked by the breakdown in communication. and other things that happened. He reduced the bill by $300 and sent someone to repair the furniture. They were also supposed to: Install a new roller ball on my table which I supplied btw. Steam clean the upholstered part of my slat bed and realign it. Assess wall chips left by the movers and repair. Arranged for movers to come do this. But it was never clear who was responsible for what.bThe steam cleaning wasn't done by them nor the person who came to assess the wall. One mover even commented he "has bad days all the time." I told him: That's not what customers want to hear.It was arranged for 10:30 and got texted before 8:00 they were on the way. I re-arranged the time again. When I relayed that to the owner, he suddenly decided to cut off communication, even after emailing asking him to call. He claimed the wall and mattress issues "weren't move-related. even after our discussion" They sent $100 and stopped responding completely. All businesses have problems and it's all how it's solved that the story gets told. Final Thoughts This whole experience has left a terrible taste in my mouth. Many details are left out, but in short -- the lack of responsibility, poor communication, and dismissive customer service were unacceptable. Please, avoid this company

They also make custom designed pieces. I find this location a bit more intimidating than the one at the Rideau Centre, as it's quieter and the number of staff is usually greater than the number of customers, so I feel like they all stare at you as you are looking around, lol. So Ottawa is currently in lockdown at the time of the writing of this review, so they are closed for in-store shopping, but they have a website and you can buy online.

They have jewelry from lots of local designers around the Ottawa area it seems! Our items were from an artist Diane Roger who used to work at Magpie and now sells items independently from Arnprior! Always nice to support Canadian/local.
