The ONE positive I can say about this restaurant is that they were fast at preparing and getting our food to us. That's it. That's the end of the positives. The food does not have much flavor at all. I ordered the teriyaki chicken bowl. It is mainly a lot of rice with some chicken. The person I was with ordered the steak bowl. You pay more for the steak but get much less meat. Neither were very flavorful. My BIGGEST complaint is the staff. I witnessed the woman at the counter be EXTREMELY rude to another customer because she asked for two bags so she could double bag her to go order since the bag they handed her with her food in it was already torn. The lady at the counter said something smart to her (through her mask) that I could not hear and then just rudely dropped the two extra bags on the counter. Solid reasonably priced hibachi mainly focused around takeout. No it's not a high end hibachi place but it's good. It's counter service if you're dining in. We have bee. Eating here over a year and everything we have tried has been reasonably good. I was in the mood for some Hibachi but wasn't really in the mood to go in a sit down to eat. This was my first time trying Otoro but I decided to give them a try because they had great reviews on DoorDash (I ordered pick up through DoorDash btw). Outside the restaurant it wasn't too busy, was easy to find, and easy to find parking too. When I first walked in I wasn't greeted but it was okay because the pick up process was easy. I told the woman at the front I was here for a pick up and it was ready within minutes. The service wasn't that great but the overall presentation of the meal was pretty good. The ambiance gives a casual pick-up restaurant with an option to dine in. Now on to the food, it was pretty good. The person who got the steak hibachi dinner said hers was pretty good, but she wishes it came with more steak. My shrimp and chicken combo was pretty good, the yum yum sauce was a great addition to the meal. The sushi rolls were okay, they lacked flavor and the tempura breading on my crunchy shrimp roll was a little on soggy side. My favorite part of the meal however was the spring rolls! It came with edamame, shrimp, sautéed mushrooms onions and broccoli, 2 California rolls, and a fried spring roll. In my opinion there can not be too many Japanese style hibachi places. This recent addition to the Birmingham food scene is located on South Shades Crest Road right across from the YMCA. It's tucked away at the very end of a strip and almost not noticeable but for their bright string lights that they hung right outside above their outdoor seating area. This place reminds me a lot of OEC Japanese Express a few miles down John Hawkins Pkwy, but much larger in terms of seating (indoor and out) and more nicely decorated. Otoro's is also a "walk up" to counter to place your order. Their lighted menus above the order counter is massive. Their menu choices of "hibachi" and sushi are thorough. There's pretty much any combination of hibachi you can choose. Take a couple minutes to study their menu as they distinguish their different options with their Specials, Combos, Bowls, Boxes or Dinners. I was hungry so I opted for the Dinner of course which comes with noodles, veggies, rice and salad. I ordered our meals to-go so I can't comment on the service, but they seem very efficient and will bring your dishes to you after you find a seat. My shrimp dinner was very good. The large shrimp were cooked just right and my portions were massive. I feel like if I had eaten there I would've gotten even more food on an open plate. They can only fit so much in those to go boxes. Note to self: eat there next time. I had a nice portion of noodles as well as rice. The rice was a little bland by itself but eating with veggies and shrimp cured that dilemma quickly. Tammy tried the steak dinner. The cut of steak wasn't a filet, but it was cooked medium rare as she ordered and was a little cheaper. If you want the Filet mignon dinner it's only $3 more. Again, lots of food for 2 meals. Prices are trend on the higher side. I prefer traditional hibachi places like my favorite Stix where they cook in front of you and make large "fires" in your face and toss shrimp in your mouth, but if you need a "quick" healthy meal with most of the major food groups, this is the way to go. To show up and never get any food or have food ready. Change the phone number on your door so that people will know who they are calling. Brand new restaurant that opened in the strip mall across from the Y on Shades Crest. It's an order at the counter kind of place and the food is brought out to you. We started out with the crab rangoons. These were fantastic! Lots of filling, the way I like them. The kid said these were her favorite ones ever! I got the bento box with salmon. It came with edamame, 2 pieces of sushi, fried rice, a spring roll, veggies and the salmon. It was very good. I really liked the sushi and the spring roll. Salmon and veggies were very tasty. My only complaint is that the fried rice was kind of bland, I had to add yum yum sauce to make it tasty. The place is small but there are a few tables outside. Service was FAST. This would be a great place for a quick meal. I'm not gonna lie the music was kind of annoying; hoping they play something else next time I visit because we will be back! read more

First, the taste was good, and service was fine but we were only customers in mid afternoon. Our shrimp beef entre was especially good when one adds the red jelly type sauce and soy type sauce. The beef was cooked medium when we asked for medium rare, but it was tender. After we were finished, I noticed the great reviews and photos of their spring rolls. For $1 each, they seem like a sure bet!! When you have photos on display of your entrees, make sure your food matches the photo, especially on size. The reviews boasted generous amounts of food in the past. The overall volume of and entree was not bad, but the steak part of the entree was lacking by over one third in reduction. Fourteen dollars would seem to enable them to match their photo! The rest rooms were clean but had no soap or paper towels. I called in a $60 order, when I came to pick it up I was handed one bag, I added a drink and paid for it, had to call my child to figure out what drink he wanted and filled the drink up, was there for a total of 2 or 3 minutes in which they had plenty of time to hand me the second bag of food that I had ordered and paid for, I took the one bag that I was handed back home to realize in tiny letters on the back of the receipt it said "2 bags" in barely legible hand writing. When I drove back to the store and requested any type of compensation for having to drive there twice, I was told it was "my fault" and that they had written on the receipt that it included two bags. I used to dine at this location when it was a Chinese/Mongolian restaurant. The location is easy access with plenty of parking. They have just been open at this location for a few months and they have inside and outside under canopy dining. The inside is nicely arranged and bright and clean. If you get the two meat meal you will take some home as it is a lot of food, the next time I will opt for the Von Box with a single meat but that also comes with veggies and a spring roll and their spring rolls are oh so yummy!! **buyer beware** We love this restaurant and patronize it frequently, so the score is not for the food. We doordash'd dinner for our family, which would have been two bags, the driver sat one bag on our porch and literally ran to his car and sped off. Upon calling the driver's number, it went to voicemail then was mysteriously not a working number after we called several times. We called the restaurant thinking they left part of the order off and were told that two bags were given to the driver. The guy said there is nothing they can do about it, which we understood the issue had to be addressed with Doordash. As much as we order from them, we were surprised that they didn't replace it in good faith. But oh well. A lady from the restaurant then called us back and said we were the third customers to call and say part of their order was missing. She said it sounds like a ring. We ordered for takeout from the Leeds location through DoorDash frequently but pick it up ourselves. Every single time we get home and there are entrees missing. They will give us rice, but no protein. And the "veggies" are 90% onions and 10% broccoli and zucchini. I see someone else has complained about DoorDash drivers taking the food, but I could almost promise the drivers aren't getting the food to begin with. Once or twice messing up I understand, but every time we order two combo dinners they are both either missing one or both of the proteins. We are done, which is sad because when they first opened the food was amazing! read more
