Even though we arrived well before our 8:30pm reservation, the staff was accommodating and seated us right away outside. Dining al fresco was lovely, though fair warning to future guests: there were quite a few mosquitoes buzzing around, so bring some bug spray! The menu is conveniently available in both Italian and English, and they even offer a dedicated vegan menu. While nothing on the menu is explicitly labeled gluten-free, our server was incredibly reassuring and confidence-inspiring, telling us he could modify virtually anything to be gluten-free. I decided to order off the vegan menu, and my friend and I shared the zucchini and avocado tartare. It was fresh, light, and really good! We also ordered a side of potatoes to share, and they were so delicious--seasoned and cooked to perfection. For my main course, I had the gluten-free spaghetti prepared with an onion cream and toasted hazelnuts. The pasta itself was cooked to a perfect al dente, but the sauce was unique and a bit unusual--definitely not my personal favorite, though it was an interesting culinary experience. Redemption came quickly with dessert as the strawberries and champagne were absolutely delicious and refreshing. To top it all off, the server surprised us with a complimentary round of Limoncello on the house, which easily turned out to be the best I have ever tasted. The service throughout the night was nothing short of fantastic, and every member of the staff was fun, warm, and exceptionally nice. Despite a couple of minor hiccups with the bugs and the sauce, the stellar service and thoughtful accommodations make this place well worth a visit.

The service was fantastic and our waiter had such a great sense of humor and command of English. His knowledge of our merlot was impressive. The food was top notch especially the Tira misu increbile! The ambiance was incredible. Again, we stumbled upon it... tucked in between alleys it was away from the Venice hustle and bustle and such a family atmosphere. Find it and go to it.

It as a cool-ish early fall night, so we were thinking soup and bread. They told us the soup of the day was bean and pasta soup (pasta fasciul- which we typically love so we were excited!) so we ordered three for our group of four. We also order several desserts. The takeout total was equal to or more than it would have cost us to sit down in a restaurant and order off the menu. When we got to the house and excitedly opened the containers of soup, we were surprised to find something quite different from what was expected- it was basically canned refried beans mixed with pasta- it was partially solidified and because they put it in a paper to go container instead of a soup container it had absorbed into the container as well. Honestly, it wasn't great. We also got one of their pizzas which was cold and stuck to the top of the box, so by the time we ate it was more unappetizing. We didn't go back. Too bad, it gets amazing reviews otherwise. The thing was that the guy behind the register was somewhat arrogant and unhelpful- he knew full well what we were getting and that it wasn't what we were thinking and did not guide us any differently. So sorry we wasted one of our precious vacation meal choices on this place. It turned out to be the worst meal of our 16 day trip - every other meal we had was spectacular.

I'm glad we did because it because it was one of the best mid-day meals of our entire two week trip through Italy, Germany and Austria. La Vegana is a small, unassuming restaurant and shop in a quiet neighborhood. There are a few tables for eating in but it appears to me that much of their business is take away and selling vegan grocery items. The menu for the day is written out on a chalk board. We were able to decipher it with no problem but if your Italian is marginal the woman at the counter spoke excellent English and was helpful in making our selections. I ordered ravioli spinaci. It was very good. I ate vegan ravioli three times while in Italy, once when we made it ourselves in a cooking class in Como, then at an upscale vegan restaurant in Venezia, and finally here at La Vegana. The ravioli at La Vegana was not as fancy as at the restaurant in Venezia -- but the taste was just as good. The ravioli we made ourselves was also good -- but we're just beginners when it comes to making pasta. My traveling companions report that they also enjoyed there selections. If you are a vegan and looking for good vegan food in Ferrara, I recommend La Vegana. They open at 11:00am and close at 9:00pm. It is worth seeking out.
