I am reluctantly giving this 3 stars as it's closer to 2. I have heard good things about this restaurant and was recommended it by a friend. First off, the service was not good. Yes, the staff were friendly enough, but not efficient. The restaurant was not full but we were often overlooked, yet, there were enough staff to manage so I put it down to being badly organized. One clear example was that after our mains were cleared we waited a very long time for the dessert menu, which didn't come until we asked for it. You'd think even if they weren't attentive they'd have been trained to push dessert?! Let's get onto the food. It all sounded amazing on the menu but unfortunately this did not translate to real life. If we did a blindfold taste test for things like the heirloom tomato salad, which was sold as a seasonal special, or the squid, you'd be hard pushed to pick out this restaurant's version from a bog standard Italian restaurant like Amaroni. I've eaten heirloom tomatoes in season, in France and Italy, and they have a distinct flavour that these did not - the heirlooms we got were watery, flavourless and trumped by the sweetness of the cherry tomatoes thrown in to bulk out the dish. Not even the dressing saved this dish, which was scandalously pricey for the amount we got. We ordered so many starter and main dishes to try and each one was a disappointment. The pasta was unremarkable and forgettable - problematic since this is an Italian restaurant. For dessert, there was an olive oil cake with fresh fruit that finally lived up to what it was meant to be - just met, mind, but it seemed astounding next to all the mediocre we'd had. The chocolate tart - avoid - it was dry to the point of separating into its three layers - this actually happened when we tried to divide it up to share, an entire layer lifted off with the fork! More like eating a chocolate biscuit than a chocolate tart. And finally, don't be fooled by the lemon, apparently so generously offered with your tap water - it's to distinguish your glass from the ones having mineral water (who don't get lemon) so the staff know to top up which glasses with which water!!Seriously, I have never eaten at a restaurant with such a ridiculous (and bound to fail) system. We realized this because one of our party ate his lemon and all of a sudden started getting top ups with mineral water!! When we worked it out we peed ourselves laughing. Some table however unfortunately had most of their mineral water drunk by my friend before we worked it out and told the staff. The Fleming is supposed to be a refined boutique hotel and should be above such gimmicky service tricks - the Mandarin Grill would never need lemon to help them remember who was drinking what. The setting and the decoration of the restaurant was nice enough but if you sat at one of the tables backing into the wall, there was not enough leg room because the table was far too close to the unmovable banquette seats and it had a very annoying central spiral support which took up all the leg room. I found myself trying to fit my feet between the gaps of this spiral just to get a bit more space (but failed)!! All in all: overpriced, underwhelming, uncomfortable. Go elsewhere because for this restaurant price range there is a lot of choice in HK. read more
