Frederico and the entrance to the restaurant.

This restaurant should be on your list of places to eat in Rome. It is out of the way, but that adds to the ambiance. The food was delicious and our server was attentive to our needs and requests. I will definitely return here the next time I am in Rome.

Really good food but the menu was a little confusing on portion sizes. Different courses are much smaller so make sure to ask! Service is attentive and quick. Lots of tables and cozy inside.

Located in an unassuming, residential neighborhood, Osteria dal 1931 (which simply means "Osteria since 1931") serves a menu of traditional Roman food. Walking inside the restaurant, I was surprised to find a picture of Anthony Bourdain dining here and knew immediately that this would be a great restaurant! To start, we ordered the Antipasto della Casa, the house starter plate, which came with an assortment of different appetizers. There was freshly sliced prosciutto; polpette bianche (fried meatballs with a crispy crust and chewy interior made of beef, herbs, and pine nuts); breaded, deep-fried sliced vegetables (including zucchini and eggplant); frittata di patate (orange-colored mash of potatoes and other vegetables); and my favorite, a bowl of fagioli cannellini (beans with guanciale in a tomato-based sauce). This antipasto platter was a great way to try out a bunch of different dishes, and everything went nicely with the crusty Italian bread that came on the side. From the Secondi menu, we also ordered the Saltimbocca alla Romana, made of a slice of ham laid on top of a slice of veal, held together with a toothpick along with a sage leaf, all cooked in a delicious white wine and butter sauce. The slices of meat were tender and flavorful, and the unctuous, acidic white wine sauce was perfect for finishing up with the bread. Overall, this was a fantastic Roman-style restaurant with super friendly service, delicious food, and a cozy, homey atmosphere!

We had our first dinner in Rome at this restaurant which is an establishment in the area and it happened to be featured in an Anthony Bourdain episode. It's located in a residential area away from the touristy part of the city, approximately a 20-30 tram ride from the Trastevere/Mastai stop and then approximately a 10-15 walk from the S. Giovanni di Dio tram stop. It's a safe area even at night and definitely worth the trip out there. Upon entering the restaurant it appears small but they have a second dining area off to the left of the entrance. We made a reservation in advanced and I recommend doing this or arriving early when they open because they're pretty popular and get very busy for dinner. We were one of the first tables to be seated for an 8pm reservation and although we were not the only foreigners dining that evening, they definitely had a prevalent local crowd. We were curious to taste the fried artichokes or carciofi alla giudìa since we had heard so much about it. I love artichokes but I had never eaten them fried so I must say I was intrigued. It's not the dish that Anthony Bourdain mentions on his episode (he ate the one alla Romana with prosciutto) and I must say I wasn't a fan of the fried type. I didn't try the version Bourdain ate, but I'm sure that one would have been more in line with the way I like my artichokes cooked. When in Rome one must taste at least once all of the 4 Roman pasta dishes, so for my entrée I opted to make cacio e pepe the first one I'd try. I chose this dish mainly because I wanted to figure out whether it's all that it's cracked up to be and also whether it was a dish I needed to keep trying at other restaurants to compare flavors. As a disclaimer, I'm not a huge fan of mac 'n cheese and this dish seems to be the the Italian version of mac 'n cheese, but better. I must say it was a rich and very cheesy dish as expected. Definitely a cheese lover's delight. While I did enjoy the dish, I feel like I got it out of my system and honestly don't ever need to revisit it again. It's definitely not my favorite out of the 4 Roman pastas. My husband's dish on the other hand was absolutely delicious. It was a fetuccine with guanciale, artichoke and mint, which was an interesting combination (we've never had mint in our pasta) and one that worked really well. For our main entrée we opted to taste the oxtail in tomato sauce. This was a winning dish as well. The tomato sauce was so flavorful and tasty and the oxtail was on point. I wish there would have been more meat on those bones though, it was too good. They offer a cool option to order house wine by the quarter or half liter if you're into having different wines with different foods instead of committing to one big bottle of one single type of wine. For dessert we ordered a tiramisu which was ok, but perhaps because of the cup in which it was served it seemed to have too little of the coffee drenched lady fingers that I love so much, and more of the thick, rich mascarpone. Nonetheless it was the perfect size to share and kill a craving without feeling too stuffed. The servers were nice, friendly and helpful. Definitely recommend this lovely restaurant to anyone visiting Rome and anyone wanting to escape the tourist scene.

Carciofi alla Romana, the artichoke appetizer and a Roman specialty. The best artichoke dish I've ever eaten!

You can't go wrong when you follow Anthony Bourdain, and we certainly didn't! We ate at Osteria dal 1931 during our trip to Italy because we saw Anthony Bourdain eat there on his show. Our lunch there turned into our most memorable meal of our trip. Venturing to Osteria dal 1931 required a train ride and a tram ride from our hotel -- and the only English we heard all day was just the two of us talking. We were the only tourists in an area of town filled with locals. The staff people at Osteria dal 1931 were very accommodating and friendly even with a language barrier. When we placed our order, the owner suggested the artichoke appetizer, and told me in Italian that the dish was a "specialty of Rome." (I understood him with my limited Italian!) What a wonderful recommendation he made! The artichoke was the softest and most delicious artichoke we've ever eaten. My husband ate the classic carbonara for his meal, and I ate the cacio de pepe for my meal -- both were incredible. The tiramisu for dessert was perfect. You won't find frills and/or modern food at Osteria dal 1931 -- this restaurant serves classic dishes from recipes that likely haven't been touched for generations. This is good, old-fashioned Italian cooking. When we showed the owner a picture of Anthony Bourdain, he was so excited to learn that we visited the restaurant because of that! He even wanted to take a picture with my husband. Long story short? Go here for great food, great service and a great environment. You'll be more than a restaurant patron. The staff will make you feel like family.

For foodies: Absolute perfection. I came for lunch at about 12:45, and was the first customer--just in time to catch nona in the act of making homemade ravioli on one of the dining room tables! Alas, I didn't order the ravioli (felt slightly guilty) but rather the homemade fertucine with bacon, artichoke, and mint. DAZZLING. So simple yet so good. I chased it with a simple mixed salad, and finished with molten chocolate cake that came with a scoop of gelato. Overall an outstanding meal. The space is homey and welcoming, and the staff are friendly. Highest recommendation.

Our first day in Rome and exploring the neighborhood our Air BnB is located and stumbled across this beautiful gem without even hearing about it prior. We were drawn in by the aesthetic charm of this little underground restaurant with its beautiful curb side seating, and were pleasantly surprised when a member of this family ran establishment pointed at pictures on the wall of none-other then Anthony Bourdain sitting at our exact table enjoying the Artichoke we had just started consuming hungrily. Two tables away an older lady who I assume was somehow related to everyone else there was preparing the days ravioli and was happy to show me how she filled and sealed each one. We went at noon and had the entire restaurant to ourselves till 1. I ordered a dessert and they heard it was my friends birthday, they turned the lights down and walked out with the house cake which had a makeshift candle in it, singing "Happy Birthday" to him as they entered. I'm in love with Rome and it's people and it's only been the first 12 hours.

What a wonderful spot!! If you want to get out of the city and experience dinner as a local, this is the place! We were treated like family, and the good was absolutely A+!

Don't listen to AA's review as I can have no conceivable idea how they were rude to him unless he was rude to the restaurant. They were very friendly. We went there because of Anthony Bourdain too, and when we told the owner that we were there because of that, he became SO friendly! He wanted to take a picture with us. He said that episode did wonders for his restaurant and he was so appreciative of it. He had pictures of Anthony around the restaurant. OK... about the food now. For a heads up, nothing is in English, so come prepared with a downloaded version of Google Translate on your phone. The food is very simple and classic, but excellent! I had the artichoke with prosciutto and it was amazing. Next, I had pasta and then a beef dish.

It is true that we went here because of Anthony Bourdain, we went back a week later because this was one of the best meals we ever had. Stephen the owner, his wife, and the entire staff were unbelievable and the food was fantastic. We spent one night in Rome before heading off to Croatia. Upon our return to Rome I asked my family if they would like to go back to Ostaria Dal 1931 for dinner and it was a resounding yes! The Cacio e Pepe is fantastic as was the ravioli, mussels, and antipasto. The house red wine also was sublime. When in Roma you have to go here! Thank you Stephen

Amazing in all aspects! Beginning with customer service. We were greeted with a glass of wine while our table was prepared. The ravioli was perfect! Ambiance was excited with lots of conversation and smiles! Its off the beaten path with locals and great prices. I highly recommend!!

My family and I started with the prosciutto and buffalo goat cheese served with oil and pepper, which was my favorite part of the entire meal. We also ordered a pretty good vegetable lasagna, a chicken dish with a delicious sauce, and two gnocchi dishes, including a carbonara-style one. Everything came out quickly, and there were unique items displayed around the restaurant that you could try and buy, which made the experience even more fun. We were so full from the appetizer that we only ate about half of the gnocchi. The owner noticed and kindly refunded those dishes, saying we should not pay for something we barely touched. That level of thoughtfulness is rare and left a huge impression on us. Overall, Masto is an amazing restaurant with fantastic food, quick service, and some of the kindest staff you will ever meet. I would DEFINITELY recommend it to anyone visiting Rome.
