Ornelas Landscaping & Grading - Excavation Services Near Me - Gilroy, California

I'm happy to update my original 3‑star review to a full 5 stars now that everything has been made right. It took some persistence to get back in touch with Gerardo, but once communication re‑opened, he genuinely stepped up. He sent someone out to address every issue I had documented: they cut the landscape fabric away from the tree trunks, moved the drip emitters about two feet out where the roots actually take up water, and corrected the garden bed irrigation so the plants receive proper coverage for square‑foot gardening. During the inspection, we discovered that the old sprinkler lines had never been fully shut off when the drip system was installed - something that explained the constant water running down the street. Once Gerardo returned, he fixed the problem by cutting off the water supply to the old sprinklers entirely. The front‑yard drip system now works exactly as it should, and the weed fabric is no longer suffocating my mature trees. I truly appreciate that he honored his 1‑year warranty and resolved the issues thoroughly. My only hope now is that one of my stressed trees recovers in time, but the corrective work was done properly and professionally. This experience ended on a positive note, and I'm glad to give Ornelas Landscaping & Grading the 5‑star rating they earned through making things right. *** In-Progress Review: 3 weeks out, already violating his 1-year warranty. As a 16-year Yelp Elite reviewer, I always aim to give local businesses a fair shake. Right now, I'm sitting at a 3-star crossroads with Ornelas Landscaping & Grading. My project was completed just 3 weeks ago, and while Gerardo explicitly promised a 1-year warranty, he is already ghosting me on critical repairs. My final review and rating are entirely pending how he handles these issues. The Good: His crew works incredibly hard, and the initial heavy grading work was done well. The Urgent Concerns & Warranty Failures: Aggressive Payment Demands vs. Ghosting: The moment the work was supposedly 'done,' Gerardo demanded immediate payment. When I didn't have a check ready on the spot, he heavily pressured me to get it to him the very next day. Nowhere in the quote did it state payment was due immediately upon completion (industry standard is typically Net 30 days), but I felt rushed and complied. It is highly unprofessional that he can hustle so aggressively to collect my money, but goes completely radio silent when his work fails 2-3 weeks later. Textbook Root Flare Suffocation: The crew failed basic landscaping best practices on my mature trees, which have sensitive root crowns. They pulled the landscape fabric tightly against the tree trunks and piled 4 inches of mulch over it, trapping rot-inducing moisture directly against the wood. Worse, they placed the drip emitters directly on top of the trunks instead of out at the drip line where the trees actually drink water. The trees are now being over-watered at the trunk and under-watered at the roots at the same time--classic textbook signs of crown and root flare suffocation. Last week the leaves on my persimmion tree were looking wilty, this week the leaves have fallen and the remaining leaves on the tree are crispy on the tree. It's the fastest way to kill a mature fruit tree, and mine are now actively dying because of this setup. Walking Back Promises on Garden Beds: Gerardo, the owner, ran irrigation lines to my garden beds and explicitly promised that once I had them set up, he would return to adjust the lines properly. Right now, for each garden bed, there are just 4 thin drip lines watering 4 single spots, which is useless for a square-foot gardening setup that requires full coverage. Now that he has my money, he changed his tune, saying 'that's just how it is' and blaming material costs instead of honoring his word to adjust it. Neglected Irrigation Leaks: I believe I have leak in the front yard since it has been sending water running down the street for a full week now, plus a leaking backyard manifold. I've also sent him pictures of the water running down the street 6 days ago. Zero Commitment: I have been texting Gerardo photos of the dying trees and the leaking lines for a week. He refuses to give me a committed date to come by and inspect his own work under his warranty. I want to give this business a great final score, but a warranty is only as good as the contractor's word. I am waiting for Gerardo to honor his 1-year warranty and fix these issues this week. I will update this review to reflect his professionalism once the job is actually made right. read more

This is my second project with Ornelas Landscaping, and I couldn't be happier with the results. In 2019, they transformed my backyard with a garden area, fire pit, leveling, and concrete work. Years later, everything has held up beautifully, and it's still one of my favorite places to entertain. When it came time to transform my front yard in 2026, I knew who to call. They handled the concrete work, landscaping, fencing, and electrical, and the results look exceptional--as you can see in the photo. They've helped turn my home into my own personal retreat. I'd honestly rather stay home than go to a resort because it's so relaxing here! I highly recommend Ornelas Landscaping and would gladly work with them again. read more

Gerardo and his crew did an amazing and meticulous job on our backyard pavers and artificial turf. His communication is top-notch--he is completely responsive, listens to feedback, and ensures the job is done right down to the last detail. The craftsmanship is excellent, and he was very accommodating when it came to making sure minor details were perfected during our final walk-through. A friend of mine saw the finished project and immediately asked for his number. Highly recommend. I requested quotes from multiple contractors and in addition to completely understanding our goals, Gerardo was the only one gave recommendations to our plan that we really liked. He was very prompt to send estimates without any reminders from us. And was the most responsive while giving very competitive quotes. For context, I had 1 contractor completely flake on quotes and another completely miss an appointment. Finally, one of the most things I really liked was his recommendation stayed as recommendation. He didn't push and on multiple occasions would be like "it is up to you". I have added some before after image. I feel very satisfied and I am very happy we went with OrnelaS Landscaping read more

Orneleas Landscaping did an excellent job with my landscaping project. Their forte is hardscaping, and the quality of their work really shows. The paver installation, concrete work, and custom concrete and steel planters turned out great and added a beautiful finished look to my outdoor space. They also installed irrigation for both my front and back yards, and everything is working as expected. What I appreciated most was that they were flexible and worked with me throughout the project. When I had changes or didn't like parts of the original design, he was able to accommodate my requests and make adjustments to create a result I was happy with. He also went above and beyond by helping assemble my raised garden beds and getting them set up. I added onto the project by having him fill my vegetable garden beds with soil and run the irrigation system. He was willing to take on this smaller additional project and help complete my garden setup. He was responsive throughout the project and came back when needed. When one of the trees did not make it, he replaced it without any issues. The team was professional, friendly, and easy to work with. Overall, I'm very happy with the quality of the work and would recommend Orneleas Landscaping for landscaping and hardscaping projects. read more

My patio served as a storage area for a while. When we cleared it out and started to renovate the lovely ceiling over it, we discovered that there was a severe crack in the concrete pad and that crack had let the corner supporting a built-in fireplace sink several inches. We had to stop the upper renovation until a solution was found for the patio floor. I quickly had six on-site verbal quotes after discussions on possible solutions. Gerardo Ornelas of Ornelas Landscaping Inc. provided a couple of solutions with verbal estimates on-site; once I selected the path forward, his written quote came the same day. Others had similar possible approaches but did not provide written quotes in a timely manner. Gerardo's team started in two days and completed the work on time and within the quote. The scope of work covered demolition of the large brick fireplace and counters as well as the existing concrete pad. This was done very quickly and quietly in very tight quarters by a shared property line. The new concrete included colored concrete and a pebble top. The result is beautiful - far more attractive than the original patio. Gerardo's team works very hard, efficiently, and neatly. I was totally new to making choices in selecting the concrete color and types of pebbles; Gerardo presented me with samples that picked up colors of the house. Before and during the work he was always quick to answer questions for this "newbie." I appreciated his company's work ethic, quality of work, knowledge, timeliness, and pleasant demeanor. Now my original project is resuming, but the end result will be far nicer due to the honest advice and great implementation of the rebuilding of my patio floor. As a result of the excellent work on the patio floor, we asked Gerardo to evaluate another project. We have a fence in the back yard that is shared with two neighbors on the other side. The fence failed unexpectedly after installation by another vendor a few years ago. Since we have a pool on our side and children and dogs on the neighbors' side, it was imperative to repair the whole back fence quickly. After examining the failing fence, Gerardo Ornelas of Ornelas Landscaping Inc provided a written quote that included completion of the job within a day. His team completed the task on time and within budget. The neighbors were not disturbed by noise, and the safety of our pool area was not compromised. Watching the work progress, it was apparent that his team is really experienced in working with the style of fence we have. Their teamwork was evident. As in another project completed for us, I appreciated his company's work ethic, quality of work, knowledge, timeliness, and pleasant demeanor. read more

I had a great experience with Ornelas Landscape and Gardening in San Jose. They helped replace my front yard lawn, install new irrigation, built brick retaining walls and installed concrete, along with other smaller tasks, and the whole project turned out really well. They added new part of a concrete driveway, that they blended in expertly with the existing slab. The project was fairly large and took a week to complete. What really stood out to me was their work ethic and punctuality. They showed up on time every day and worked incredibly hard. One day when they were removing the old grass, it turned into a long job, but they kept working into the evening to make sure that section was fully finished rather than leaving it halfway done. They were also very communicative throughout the process and took the time to answer all my questions. I appreciated that they gave thoughtful suggestions on things like retaining wall options and which plants or florals would work best for the space. The final results look great, the pricing was competitive compared to other quotes I received, and they made sure everything was cleaned up once the work was finished. Overall, I'm very happy with the outcome and would definitely recommend Ornelas Landscape and Gardening to others. I would gladly hire them again for future landscaping projects. read more

Hi all - I couldn't be happier with the work Ornelas Landscaping & Grading did on my property. They completely transformed a very steep hillside into a beautiful, functional outdoor space, connecting the basement, a side path, and stairs up to the main property. Their team built a retaining wall, a long staircase with multiple landings, and custom redwood decks and railings that not only look fantastic but feel incredibly solid. The stair layout flows naturally with the terrain, the railings are straight and sturdy, the decking is beautifully finished, and the finished project looks carefully thought out. They also handled the grading, planting areas, tree installation, irrigation preparation, and overall site work. Even with the challenges of a steep slope, everything came together cleanly and professionally in a timely manner. The crew showed up consistently, kept the project moving, asked clarifying questions mid-project and delivered a great finished product. They were easy to work with, communicated well, and clearly cared about the quality of the finished product. If you're looking for a contractor who can handle landscape construction, I highly recommend Ornelas Landscaping & Grading. read more

Our rear drip system master line sprung a leak. Called Gerardo on a Sunday and he came out within 45 minutes. I wanted him to replace the entire line up by our rear fence. He took a look at it and said there was no need to replace all of it, so he just replaced the damaged section. Fast response time, honest appraisal of the work needed, efficient, quality workmanship and very fair pricing, that's what I got. There are a lot of good landscape and sprinkler repair firms out there, Gerardo just happens to be THE BEST! read more
