In all states and territories within the U.S, after you turn 21, you may continue to use your driver license or identification card with the special vertical orientation. However you're able to obtain a license with horizontal orientation after you turn 21 via renewal. This is completely optional. In the guide book of selling tobacco and alcohol products:
1 No ID, No Sale! Ask for a valid photo ID of every customer who is under age 27 and purchasing tobacco. Check ID before getting the product.
2 Compare the ID photo to the customer. Does it match? Do the height and weight look right?
3 Check for fake ID. Have the customer remove the ID from their wallet and check to make sure the ID is not tampered with (plastic peeling, smudges, and misaligned numbers). Look for required and undamaged watermarks, and
laser engravings.
4 Check the expiration date. An ID must be current and not expired to be valid.
5 Is the license vertical? In Massachusetts, this means the customer is under 21. Check the "Under 21 Until" [date] to verify they are at least 21 before selling them tobacco.
6 Calculate and verify age. Use one of the following methods.
I want to call attention to section 5 of this guide released by the state.
I had walked into this establishment looking for a bowl piece that attaches to a bigger piece to smoke out of. Maybe was going to spend $15, $20, wouldn't know because I didn't even make it to the counter let alone see anything for sale. Man stopped me as I entered, and I'm very used to this routine. I've been 21 for 9 months, I've been in plenty of dispensaries and liquor stores in various states, so my ID was already out of wallet and ready to be scanned. This did not even happen. The man takes my ID and tells me I could not have 'Under 21' stamped on my license. I was shocked because, for one, I could. It was. Job interviews, referenced stores requiring my ID and the state trooper that pulled me over 4 months ago all accepted this I.D, with no problem. From my assumption the difference was this man was too lazy to even look at it or read it past that. He just told me no. I asked really and why, to which he said I just couldn't. I asked to speak to someone else because that was really weird and it had never been a problem and he said responded that he was the owner. At this point, I realized I walked in while he was lounging on the couch smoking, chilling, and I had interrupted him, and he did not want to waste his time with some Puerto Rican kid half his age. Him denying and downright discriminating me for my license was just his way of saying 'You're not worth it, f**k off.'
I said whatever and left with no problem. Because it wasn't worth it. I instead drove 9 miles and legally purchased a 12 pack from Adams Market and 3.5g from ClearSkys. I don't even drink often. I did it out of spite. read more
