This place was a pleasant surprise. I ordered the burger patty plate, which was...interesting. It is two beef patties on a plate, with cheese and some grilled mushrooms. That's it. No lettuce, or tomato, or anything else you'd usually find on a burger. It was quite tasty, but the lack of other ingredients threw me a bit. I pass by this place every day, and I'll admit, it doesn't look like much, with its kitschy decor and an ancient TV providing fuzzy coverage off in the corner. All that said, it does provides you with some good, solid fare. So maybe it's a touch on the greasy side; that doesn't mean it's not still tasty! They've got a lot on the menu, so you should be able to find something to please even a picky palate. Try the gyros, if all else fails, 'cuz their tzatziki sauce is pretty darned good, in my humble opinion. And don't let the grizzled regulars scare you off! Haven't found many places open for breakfast in downtown Berkeley so I have to give them praise for that fact alone. Not to say there aren't others or better places but this one is here. We have been going here for two years. It's our basic weekend brunch joint. The owners (Mo in particular) are extremely friendly and accommodating. We used to go at least every weekend until we started a diet and didn't want to be tempted by the potatoes. We still go, and Mo has no problem with all of our special requests. The food comes fast, it's tasty, not greasy, and it's all uncomplicated. Very simple, straightforward, and perfect for us. Food is a *little* on the pricey side for what you get, but it's worth it enough for us to keep coming back! A friendly owner really makes a huge difference when you're a regular. read more

This restaurant doesn't stand out against the many better ones in the downtown area, but it's an ok place to grab a bite to eat downtown during lunchtime. I appreciate that they attempt to make the food healthy (low fat), but unfortunately they seem to lose some of the taste by making the food healthier (you just can't win!). Cancun and Fresco were closed. And so I decided it was time to try Pollos and boy was I disappointed. A steak burrito. I mean, a super steak burrito with pinto beans was just shy of $10. It tasted just fine but was certainly not worth the price tag. All I was asked were the type of meat and beans I'd like. And for the first time since Chiptole, I saw lettuce. It didn't trouble the taste too much and the wetness of the burrito could have been reduced a bit. I did like the grilled burrito. Hot and crispy. The point is that there are better places for a burrito. I mean, just seeing how exhaustive the menu is should give one an idea of the quality of the foods. Came in for breakfast. Definitely a good place to go. Some places either want you to crush you with the weight of their many selections and heart attack-inducing food or make you want to buy everything separately if you don't want their meals (ok, seems like that to me.) Anyway, I liked how their meals had a variety of items as well as range of prices. I didn't feel hungry enough to have a huge meal, but I knew I wanted something more than just a bagel. They have eggs, bacon, toast, english muffins, oatmeal, orange juice, sausage, etc. Had a simple breakfast of eggs, bacon and toast with hot tea. It was a basic breakfast with 1 egg (I think), 2 pieces of bacon and two pieces of toast. It was pretty good. Eggs were nothing special, but the bacon was too crunchy for me. The toast had butter between the slices, which kinda annoyed me, because that meant the bottom slice was soggy. Not the end of the world. I was surprised because even though I said the meal was for here, I was given a to-go cup for my tea. I don't really care about it, but I noticed others got the regular "for here" mugs. The food wasn't amazing, but it also wasn't disgusting either. Better here than Hometown Buffet or McDonald's! It also had a good crowd around 9:30. I was somewhat surprised because I figured it would never get too crowded, but by that time there were about 10 people that had ordered food/got to-go in the 45 minutes I was there. One person was there studying, which was surprising with the noise from the TV and the chatter amongst the patrons. Not a good place to study, but not a bad place for breakfast. Oh, and there is wifi. I couldn't tell if there was or not by these reviews, but the answer is yes. read more

We were there on a Friday just after lunch "rush". We ordered : single waffle, fish burrito and gyros. All were very good. The waffle was cooked through moist with flavor (almost as good as my Mom made). The fish burrito was " excellent", the flaked fish was balanced with the black beans & rice in every bite. The gyro was terrific, you had to eat the overflowing meat first. We chatted with one of the owners, 2 brother's stared at this location 30+ years ago. I first found this place about ten years ago,when I was in Berkeley. The atmosphere is very funky,very cool. it is always busy,serving breakfast and lunch,full of students form nearby UC. lunch is crowded as well,with office workers and students. the food is a mix of American and middle eastern food ,at great prices. the owners,from Iran,are very friendly and remembered me after I had not been in for a year or so. the portions are huge and very filling. This place is the best. The guys that run the place are super friendly and the cooks know how to prepare a meal. I started coming here every Sunday morning after working out and after the 3rd visit the guy behind the counter knew me by name along with my order. I unfortunately don't remember his name :P Anyways, I'd always get the eggs/bacon/potatoes/muffin plate and it would always be spot on. This is your neighborhood joint that now typically is only a memory. The reasonable prices for decent basic food follow that concept. The burgers and fries here have been my go-to choice most trips, but I'll second the thumb-up on the fish burrito. Service is quite respectable without being obnoxious; they wouldn't have been here for years without treating customers well. It's only a short walk from UC, the movies and BART. There's lots of choices for eats in the area, but if you want something straightforward and fairly inexpensive, this is the place. read more

It doesn't look as welcoming on the outside, which I probably why I've never been here before because it just looks old, but it's one of those places that just won't fail you. While the food was enjoyable, the reason I can't give higher than a 3 stars is for the state of the utensils and silverware. The fork and spoon where so worn and flimsy that I had to be careful as not to bend them. Also the cleanliness of the dishes was suspect. Normally I wouldn't complain about something like this, but for the price of the meal, I would expect better. I would really recommend getting new utensils ASAP. read more

The first time I ate here, about a year ago, it was really good. I've gone two more times since then recently and was disappointed both times. When I came in they said I could order anything but waffles. Okay, I guess they had turned off their waffle iron. It was almost the end of the day so I didn't blame them too much. So, I ordered pancakes, and they were really floury tasting, really thick and chewy. I did not like them. I came in again a few months later in the early afternoon and thought maybe it was just the pancakes that were bad last time, so I got the waffles instead. They said it's a 20 min wait for the waffles. Ok. I had already taken the time to come down there so I didn't want to just find somewhere else to eat, might as well just wait the 20 minutes. The waffles come out, and they are just as doughy and chewy as the pancakes I ordered last time! Ew. I don't know what happened. The waffles were great the first time I went here. Now twice in a row, their pancakes and now their waffles are not good. The eggs and home fries were good, but I won't be coming back here again. read more
