First time trying Famous Taco and it was amazing! Got take out, it was quick and the food was very fresh. Ordered the Carne Guisada dinner with rice and beans. Also got the combination plate, came with an enchilada, taco and tostada, came with a side of Carne Guisada. Shells were homemade and crispy. Portions were amazing. Chile (salsa) was fresh and spicy. We should have left when we walked into an empty restaurant with dirty tables and sticky floor but I used to like the food so we sat down. Noticed two employees sitting at a table on their phones and not really paying attention to us. We ordered fairly quickly though and noticed the take out business was really doing well. After 30 minutes of waiting for our food I got one of the employees attention and wondered how much longer on our order. She went came back with two plates that had obviously been sitting for some time. Plates were lukewarm warm and food had cooled. I took a bite and told her the food was cold. She and another employee looked at each other but said nothing to us. Didn't offer to take the food back. I finally told her to give me the bill and take out boxes so I could take the food home and microwave it. I stopped coming to this restaurant several years ago because the service was poor and they regularly got orders wrong which was particularly annoying with take out as you get home and find out you got the wrong order. Ordered the chicken taco mush which is always good. My complaint is that this time I ordered small chips/salsa on the side. I got a big bag of chips and a condiment container with about 2 tablespoons of salsa for $5.99. Their salsa was my favorite so I was very disappointed that they charged me so much for a tiny thing of salsa. Finally working a local job, Famous Taco was more of a convenience lunch stop more than anything. Never bothered to look at reviews until I got on Yelp to finally type out mine. I was shocked to see the low stars. Ate lunch here ALMOST everyday for a couple of months. Food was always fresh, fast , and very tasteful. Waitstaff was always very attentive and polite. I thought prices were fairly reasonable for an easy lunch stop. Definitely will be stopping back when I'm working local again. Oh yeah, one more thing.... If I could give this restaurant negative stars I would. First the customer service is trash. The staff is incompetent and can't even take simple orders. I ordered a breakfast taco with no egg for which I had to repeat myself 3x stating no egg. They would only take cash so I had to go to an ATM to even purchase Get to pick up my order and left when I got to my destination there the taco was full of egg and nacho cheese sauce (why who puts nacho cheese sauce on a breakfast taco). I called to speak with someone as I wasn't able to eat it and threw away as I'm heading to my appointment. I was on hold at least 10 mins and the same person that took my order answered. I immediately asked for a manager and she puts me on hold. Few minutes pass and same person picks the phone back up and says she can't tell me who the manager is. I advise that makes no sense and tell her about my issue. This girl proceeds to argue with me stating that there was no egg on my item and that I was not telling the truth and the system shows she put no egg. Why lie about a $4-5 item? I still have my receipt and shows that she didn't advise no egg. She continued to argue stating that I can't get my money back unless I dig the item out the trash and bring it back. This is some of the worst customer service I've ever experienced. I've been a customer of Famous Taco since they originally opened years ago. This restaurant is now at a different location. Surprisingly with this move, the decor and looks are dreary. When I first walked into the restaurant, I was slapped in the face with annoyingly bright colors and quite outdated Mexican restaurant decor. The bright yellow walls assaulted my eyes and the chairs, tables, and wall murals all stared at me as I ate my food. The decor of a restaurant makes the biggest first impression and this one was, for me, not pleasant. Our waitress was very kind and immediately warmed up my experience, making it better. She was helpful, friendly, and was truly interested in our experience. I ordered a small cheese dip and the Enchiladas de Queso. A good suggestions for any Vegetarians eating here. I was getting worried my waitress forgot about my cheese dip, but it came out with my entree. The cheese dip was very different from what I'm used to. It was akin to Velveeta cheese, but fancied up with onions and diced peppers. Overall, somewhat disappointing but not bad. My enchiladas were good! The reliance on yellow/orange cheese is strange but the flavor was good. The mix of the cheese and gravy-like sauce was yummy. The beans were a decent texture with a nice flavor and the rice was well flavored as well. Tl;dr: Eye hurting, outdated decor. Great service. Different but overall good food. read more

Famous Taco is one of those cravings from college that creeps up on me every once in a while and I just have to get some tacos to make it go away! They serve them up loaded with cheese, lettuce, and tomato, and the three taco dinner comes with rice and beans. Their hot green salsa is pretty decent if you like a little spice. Not the best tacos in town by any means, but comparable in price to other spots that serve a similar style taco, and they give me that 4th meal nostalgia from when things were easy! read more

The chips and cheese dip are the best in Lansing. Great homemade taste on the chips. The chicken burritos, tacos, and enchiladas are the best. I had a carne guisada burrito and it was the best I have had since leaving Texas 10 years ago. Good rice and beans. Excellent House-made spicy hot sauce. Good rice and beans. Prices are low, with excellent value on the menu items. My one suggestion is for Famous Taco to also use a white Mexican melting cheese for cheese dip and for some items instead of, or in addition to, the yellow cheese used in their current cheese dip and on some items. Look, yes they have crappy service. Yes it takes a min to get your food. But man are their chicken tacos delicious! I moved out of state and every time I come home I get 2 chicken tacos and chips and salsa. Their taco shells are amazing. Recommend phone order and picking it up. Please don't waste your time trying to eat at this un-clean restaurant with incredibly awful customer service. When I called to order I was placed on hold for 5 minutes. I was nearly to the restaurant by the time they took my order. I arrived to find the restaurant dead and well staffed. I waited 1 hour for food that was supposed to take 15-20 minutes, only to find out that they didn't have an ingredient to complete one of the dishes. I politely asked for a refund as I had to wait forever for something that wasn't what I ordered, only to be ignored by an unapologetic manager. They also gave my girlfriend the wrong change recently, dollars off, seemingly on purpose. I'll never ever go back and regret giving them any of my business or time. Haven't been here in quite some time since I move out of state. I must say the only thing still good here is the tacos. The guy behind the counter is horribly rude and lacks customer service skills. Then the fact that they are now charging 3.75% more of you use a card on your order is ridiculous. I guess business isn't doing so hot if they have to charge you extra for using a card. Can't think of the last date I went to famous taco, but they've recently come back to my mind I'd say back in March. They deliver, fast when I go through the drive through and I almost forgot how tasty those tacos were. Now they are my go to for dinner when I don't feel like cooking and often when I do. I've seen the less-than-pleasant reviews here and, though I don't agree with many of them, I have to say that the expectations may have been set a little high. Famous Taco is a Lansing landmark and, like any landmark, is definitive, recognizable, and should make the residents of this beautiful city proud. This is not fast food and is not a salsa bar-type place....but it's good, honest, well-prepared Mexican food that is still prepared in a humble family's tradition that would make the owners' ancestors proud. No longer a resident of Lansing, I fly from Florida to eat here. So, I've been eating here for almost 30 years and the food is consistent and flavorful. A 'foodie', per se, might be looking for a little more zing in the presentation or spice. Sure, the 'mild' salsa is 'thin' in spice but it's safe for those who don't like heat. But the 'spicy' is the exact right amount of spice, heat, and bursting with taste to complement the dishes. So please give this special place the business and respect it deserves, or one day you'll find it gone. read more

The food here is easy but it seems more like Taco Bell than anything authentic. The meat and salsa especially leave a lot to be desired, and with so many better taco spots in town (Pancho's, Maria's, El Oasis to name a few), I find it odd that this place is as popular as it is. read more

I just wanted to comment on the cleanliness of this place. We usually have it delivered so I've never been inside. I don't particularly love their food but my husband and kids do so we'll order it. I love Alicias Authentic Mexican Deli, If they delivered and closed later we would NEVER get famous taco. Back to the issue. I decided to pick it up cuz the delivery time was 45-60 minutes. I was really disgusted. The area by the pop machine was sticky and nasty. The trash bin was filthy. I didn't even throw away my straw wrappers (i put them in my pocket) because I didn't want to touch the trash bin. I would be afraid to see what the kitchen looks like. read more

I cant even count how many times I have had a craving for their homemade chips and salsa leading me to drive 30 miles only to find out that location has closed down and I must start some detective work to find their newest location. Famous Taco has the best nachos north of the south pole, honestly these would probably be my last meal. Nachos deluxe with no beans and no peppers. The nachos are homemade and and about as large as your hand. They come piled with rich ground beef, melted cheese, fresh guacamole, and sour cream, and of course you add some of their fresh salsa; honestly just melt in your mouth good. Please, please, please, whatever you do don't be scared away by the outside of the building, or the not cleared off tables, or the tables that are uneven, or the sometimes not so service orientated server, or..... just go and enjoy the fabulous nachos. Wow, this place swings from one extreme to the other. Today I ended up at Famous Taco mostly due to a lack of time on break and road closure due to a water main break (maybe Karma steered me there). With a feeling of dread, I pulled in. Hey! They've paved the parking lot! Upon entering, I noticed immediately the interior was much cleaner. Floor and tables were all clean. The wainscoting has been changed, and I heard Peggy de la Cruz say they're going through a slow remodel. A new server brought me a menu and greeted me before I even sat down. I placed my order and requested a knife, in addition to hot AND mild sauce with the chips. She paid attention to detail and didn't forget anything. The food came out quickly and it was quite hot (temperature). Service was spot-on. I am giving this visit to Famous taco the following grades: A on Great Attitude from Service, A on Cleanliness, A on Speed from the Kitchen, B on Quality of Food, A on Speed with the check and beverage refill, and A on comfort (the furnace was running and it felt great). Canceled the order because I called twice on the status of our order and got two different answers about the status an hour and a half after I ordered it. No thanks!
