Chancellor the Fluffy Nugget came to Original Bark for a Mani Pedi aka doggy nail trim & he was treated so well! I called ahead bc Chancellor is still a bit dog reactive for a full grooming room, and they allowed us to come during lunch so he could have the room to himself! $12 trim and I'll come back in 2 weeks for another to get the quick down (apparently the more time that passes the closer the quick grows to the end of the nail). read more

DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOG HERE!!!! *I know this is a lot, but I am pretty upset and these people are just the worst. I started off loving this place and thought everyone there was friendly and my dog Luna loved it there. I went out of town in late June and boarded Luna for the duration of the trip. She had been spent the night there once and I had spent a small fortune already on doggy daycare packages including the most expensive package (around $1100) that I had JUST purchased and hardly used at all. I thought I would eventually spend the money and it sounded like a good investment. The first day of her 5 day boarding, she bit a dog and went after another dog (2 altercations). They removed her from the rest of the dogs and did a wonderful job taking care of her while I was gone. I as so appreciative!! The said she could come back as long as we all thought it was a good idea and an employee Evie (sp) told me that if it turned out that Luna couldn't come back, I would get a refund. Also, since I was spending sooo much money here, I asked my sister for a GC for my birthday and she called the day of or after the incident (at this point they said they would usually have kicked a dog out for this, they really liked Luna and wanted to give her another chance) and put money on my account for me. So they have even more money of mine AND it's a birthday gift. So I enrolled Luna in some training and took her to the dog park multiple times where she's exhibited aggressive behavior. After that we spent about 6 more weeks training and while she is so much better I know that the environment of all the dogs in a confined space is not the best for her and probably not best/the safest for the other dogs around her so I called and asked to speak with the owner. He was not in and Courtney (who I used to really enjoy speaking to and thought was very kind, spoiler alert - she is not!! It's all a lie) said that she would contact him and get back to me. Cool, but not because her attitude really changed that instant. The second I mentioned a refund and it has all gone so down from there. Again, I don't think this is the best environment for my dog and she has already had an incident there. I didn't "change my mind" as Courtney suggested. OB runs a business caring for dogs and it's clear to me that they do not. Anyway, I called back when I didn't hear from anyone and they told me to they didn't know anything and couldn't help me. So... I called back the following day (today) and now the owner is: (the story gets better/more excuses every time I talk to Courtney) 1. He is out of State... 2. He is with his family... 3. They have cell service... 4. They don't have cell service... 5. Now he'll be gone for a week and a half At this point they won't even tell me that will actually even get back to me when he returns. They literally can't tell me that. So... I am kind of the worst, but took Luna back today and she was there for about 4 hours and in time out 3 times for riling up the other dogs. When I asked how it went, they told me it was great and didn't mention this until I did. Awesome. The lies/misinformation/withholding information literally never stop. At this point, I'm just concerned about how poorly this business is run. So, no one knows if I can get a refund or when I will find out if I get one, but they won't kick her out until she bites another dog. I really wish that wasn't a chance I was willing to take, but these people have taken $1000 for services not rendered and my birthday gift from my sister who lives across the country. I'm slightly peeved. I haven't even really asked for a refund; I just want to know WHEN I will hear from someone and Courtney has been absolutely horrible to me. If you have ever talked to a customer service rep that parrots the same words over and over while telling you nothing at all and looking you right in the eyes while they do it, enter Courtney. She has always seemed nice, but wow. The amount that these people do not care about your dog or you is honestly appalling. There are plenty of other places to spend your money so RUN AWAY FROM THIS ONE!! read more

I used to really like this place but the last few times my dog has come back pretty banged up. I'm not sure if the dog's aren't being supervised enough or because they never open the small dog area anymore. I have brought up the wounds he gets before and have just been told "we'll keep a closer eye". We've been going here for over two years but I think it's time for a change. read more

5-stars bec. the staff has been OUTSTANDING for helping my 8-month-old Dizzy to get acquainted. He has a blast. BUT: I have a question about billing. I am retired so I have an open schedule. I planned to bring Dizzy over, from 12:30 to 2:30. I was very careful to be on time, on each end of this. The very kind young lady at the desk said, "29.00" ...or $5 more than I expected. So I asked what happened. She explained that the computer calculates the fee and it does so differently after 2.5 hours. I knew that the time was almost exactly 2 hours so I disagreed. I had been prompt so I know it was not more than 2 hours. She was nice about it and revised the invoice. I'm happy but I would like to know how to avoid disputes in the future. I then went in to confront the employee that did this and was told that I should have been more specific about my plans to come back. Our first time here, we were really excited to try a new place to have our dog bathed. Original Bark was a disappointment due to their lack of customer service and manners. We barely got greeted, the price was outrageous for self-service wash, and to top it all off once we paid and purchased dog treats there was no "thank you" or "have a nice day" which may not mean a lot to you but it means a lot to me as the customer and as someone you'd think you'd like to come back soon to your place business. This review is long overdue considering how great they are and how much our family relies on them! We've been using their hike service and grooming service for 2 years now. Once a week they pick up our senior beagle and take him on a hike and once a month he gets a bath and his nails trimmed after his hike. Original Bark's staff is always super pleasant and trustworthy - often I'm not at home to let them in at either the pick up or drop off and I trust them to let themselves in. We've never had any issues. Many times when I have to be gone all day they have saved my bacon (and carpet) by getting our guy out for a walk so he can relieve himself (and have a little company for a bit)!! Our dog is also skittish as he was used in medical experiments before he was freed and came to live with us. Original Bark was great about getting him used to them and the routine. Now, our beagle boy knows the drill and comes running to the door with his tail wagging when they get here. I love that they take a photo that you can see on Instagram, too! We haven't tried their doggie daycare but our neighbors use their doggie daycare at times and their dog (and our neighbors) absolutely love it. They were the ones that recommended Original Bark to us, actually. They are a wonderful team to have on your speed-dial to help you parent your fur-baby(ies)! read more

**Review for Doggy Daycare Only** Love Central Bark! Our pup frequents the doggy daycare probably every other week for half days. The staff is always very friendly and really loves dogs. My dog never comes home smelling bad or anything. The doggie webcams are AWESOME when I'm looking for a distraction at work... it's so much fun to see all the dogs play. Expect to take your dog in for an initial behavior evaluation, assuming your pup passes the test you are free to drop off your dog anyday without reservation. Good lord these guys love dogs! But don't take my word for it, check out their webcams available on-line. You will see employees that take the time to hold the dogs, pet the dogs and play with them. A lot of daycares/boarding facilities just "supervise" and clean up messes; hard work by itself....but Central Bark employees make the extra effort to show love to your pet. I have a 3-year-old sheltie who is insane. We love him, but he has issues... One of which is that he really doesn't like to be groomed, which is too bad because of all that fur! I try to brush him 2-3 times a week, and I thought I had been doing a decent job. I thought having him professionally groomed would be a waste of money. WELL. Live and learn! When I picked him up, I almost didn't recognize him. He had the beautiful, silky fur I hadn't seen since he was a puppy. No matting anywhere, not even behind his arms (front legs.) He smelled like a rose. He was all trimmed up and shiny and beautiful. Best of all, I got to be at home taking a nap for the over two hours that the talented and wonderful Siobhan spent with him. I kept expecting a call the whole time saying that I needed to come pick him up because he wasn't cooperating, but again, Siobhan somehow wrangled him and had him looking like a show dog. Very impressed. This service and the people who work here are worth their weight in gold! read more

i LOVE Central Bark! As a recent resident of Portland, coming from Seattle, I had no idea such an idea as "doggy day care" existed! Low and behold, a brochure was in our Welcome Packet when we moved into the Ardea in the South Waterfront district. Initially, we were going to choose a day care right around the corner, but because Central Bark had much better reviews, we chose them, and i don't regret it one bit! Our dog, Cali, is a small 20 pound dog, and she absolutely LOVES it there. I'll waste all day at work just watching her play with the other doggies and follow the workers around the room. The ability to watch your dog while at day care is just an absolute treat! The workers are always kind, sweet, and more often than not are pictured cuddling with the doggies on the floor. It only took one time to have my dog excited to leave me for a day at Central Bark! All the dogs get along, and any doggie messes are always quickly cleaned up - Cali never comes home smelling bad (which ive heard is a problem at other doggie day cares). I will continue to return time and time again. The services offered are wonderful, and a great price! When it comes time i would most certainly wash my dog here, and if the situation arose, board her here. I always feel very confident that my dog is in safe and caring hands! read more

We used their nail clipping service and it was really great. The staff were extremely nice and they literally hugged and kissed my dog while they were clipping her nails. They have a daycare inside the building with cameras and windows and the dogs seemed super happy and chill. read more

It's tough to know how to rate the services here are as I was unable to get any customer service. We stopped in after passing Central Bark after a hike & had a dirty dog that could have used a grooming. I stopped in to see if they had any availability and the woman working the front desk, stopped to answer a phone call first. Then another....Then another. After the third phone call that lasted five minutes, another couple had stopped in behind me. Once this phone call ended she then proceeded to help the couple behind me first who were picking up a dog- without explanation or apology for the wait. Needless to say after waiting fifteen minutes, and after she began pulling out the file for the other couple, I left without any information or setting up an appointment. read more

Right now I am beyond pissed! I scheduled a temperament eval for my 7 mo puppy in prep for him to partake in their hiking service. Since there wasn't much info on the website as to getting started I called and asked for requirements (like any good owner would). Note that if you select the phone tree option for hikes you will be told to go to the website for all the info you need (sorry, it's not there). While on the phone the person asked all my dog's deets including age and status (he is not altered yet per vet recommendation). He is 7 months. When I arrived for our appt, I went in myself first to get the lay of the land only to be told my unaltered puppy is prohibited from the hiking service since he is older than 6 months. When I expressed frustration that I should have been told this when I called to inquire, I was told (tersely) that "it's on our website!" Our standard poodle has been going to this doggie daycare for four years. Ordinarily rather standoffish, she is so happy when she sees the staff members and she rushes through the door to the dog area. There doesn't seem to be much staff turnover--humans seem happy to be there, too. The groomers are excellent and the place is very clean. Highly recommend. read more

Took a month just to get an appointment, then they wanted to move my appointment to better accommodate THEIR schedule, then on the actual day, they insisted a basic grooming would take an hour and half, and were completely unwilling to accommodate my request to keep it under an hour (even when I suggested we could simplify or skip some of the steps altogether). We started taking our dog Tucker there to get his hair groomed because it was simply the closest location to our home in Hillsdale. However, we've come to really appreciate the staff and facility in general. Unlike other doggie daycares or groomers, it is incredibly clean, orderly and the staff are SO friendly and kind. Our dog is really anxious and they do a nice job taking care of him for the few hours we drop him off. As a note, we've never used their boarding services, but very well may in the future. Prices are a bit high, but I find them comparable to other dog groomers around Portland. Only thing is - it is really hard to get a grooming appointment, they are always booked atleast a week or two in advance. So definitely call ahead! read more

I take my little dachshund mix to daycare because he has very bad separation anxiety - the kind that causes vomiting and incontinence and significant physical stress for him. I was so disappointed when I went to pick him up at the end of the workday and could hear him whining in the back before I even opened the front door. When I asked why my dog was alone, they said, "We close at 6:15". I walked in the door a minute before closing, which I assumed was how their business hours worked. Their Yelp profile currently says they close at 6:30, but that's a moot point since I arrived before 6:15. If I'd known they leave the dogs alone at 6 or whenever he was put in the kennel by himself, I would have been sure to be there earlier. As one girl went to get my whining and visibly distressed dog, I was greeted by another person who wanted to ring me up. I told her I was upset that my dog was left alone and I wanted to know why that was. She was extremely rude to me and said, "Uh, we're actually closed..." but it was only just then 6:15 and I was just trying to pick up my dog. I told her I was leaving and she said, "Good, don't bother coming back". Needless to say, I won't be. read more

We have boarded our dog here once before for 2 weeks and most recently for 20 days and both times the groomer wasn't able to do the job. Once because he/she couldn't get to the facility for the appointment and this last time because he/she was unable to work with our 9 pound terrier/maltese mix (that was the first time ever we heard that story from a groomer). We received this news while on vacation via a phone call while we were on the road. We had to settle for a bath and nail trim from the staff who seemed to be able to work with our dog just fine. When we picked up our dog yesterday, the attitude and encounter with the manager on duty was totally unacceptable. He was condescending and lacked any sense of service ethic. He spent most of the time while we were talking to him staring at his computer and offered no apology or work around for the lack of grooming, instead he defended his groomer by citing their 9 years of experience regardless of the fact that we have had our dog groomed at least 50 times over the years without a problem from other groomers. Also, although the bill was technically correct, it was substantial ($757 before the upcharges) and the manager made sure to add in every upcharge and extra fee. For example, he added three $6 holiday day upcharges even though we were picking him up on Sunday one day before the actual holiday, along with a $25 half day charge for picking him up a couple of hours past 10 am. We will never recommend Original Bark and will never take our dog back to this place ever again! read more

DEATH"S DOOR STEP AND JUST OVER 400 DOLLARS IN VET BILLS LATER.... It took several weeks for my dog to recover after a 12 day stay. I picked her up and immediately took her to the veterinary clinic because she was clearly dehydrated and in distress. Her nose was bone dry to the touch, gum's and mouth tacky, lips grey, eyes slightly sunken. She received IV fluids, eye drops and antibiotics for an upper respiratory infection probably caused by not breathing fresh air in 12 days. I had hoped that, this being a newer facility, it would not have the typical overwhelming, gasp for air, stench that so many of these places have. I had to have friends check on the dog after receiving news that she was not doing well in general and her lips were swollen. I learned of her lips being swollen on day three of our vacation. The staff admitted that the dog "may have come into contact with nontoxic cleaning solution" used at the kennel/ day care. "May have?" I'm guessing that she must have since that was even suggested. Staff told my friends who checked on the dog that they intended to take her to the vet the following day. There was no follow through. When I picked up the dog her lips were swollen and had turned grey in color and were peeling where her skin met her fur. The vet confirmed that this was from the exposure to the cleaning chemicals and that it was also further complicated by how dehydrated the dog was. It has taken three weeks for the area to heal. There is still some slight discoloration. The environment of the facility flared up the dog's eye allergies and she was noted to have missing fur around her eye's where she had apparently rubbed off her fur with her front paws. Since bringing her home she has received eye drops that cleared up the discharge and redness but still has missing fur around her eye lids. I had provided the staff with a saline wash in the event that her allergies flared up however, it did not appear that they followed through with flushing her eyes when they began to look irritated. When I took her for her evaluation, which by the way was a joke, I was told by staff that they would be able to walk the dog as long as I requested it when dropping her off to be boarded to make sure a note was made. At 5:45 A.M on the way to the airport we dropped off the dog and were told that there was not a proper liability form available because the owner was in the process of creating one so the dog would not be walked. Read, Read, Read the general liability waver it is so poorly written that NO ONE should sign it!!! Staff reported that my dog really did not like being at the facility, would not eat or interact with the other dogs much and wanted to stay in her cage and sleep. This information was not consistent with how my dog has responded to past boarding experiences at other facilities. My dog also frequents daycare and is interactive with other dogs and people on a regular basis. Her behavior was chalked up as being home sick. Upon pick up on day twelve, the poor pup was severely dehydrated and miserable hence, that probably had more to do with her interaction at the kennel than being "home sick". While at the facility SHE LOST FOUR POUNDS. Between the WEIGHT LOSS and DEHYDRATION her skin looked droopy and not like the same dog that she was when we dropped her off. Even the vet was taken back by the dogs appearance. Obviously, I wont be going back and I caution others to be aware of the concerns I had especially for the DEHYDRATION, the "NON TOXIC CHEMICAL" EXPOSURE and the lack of Veterinary CARE. Especially since the symptoms of dehydration were so evident and could have killed her and/ or have caused other medical complications! Had I known I would have had her taken and housed at her vet's clinic for medical treatment and to protect her from being exposed to such a preventable situation. At the end of the day, staff tried be accommodating, providing updates whenever I called. I was told they hand fed the dog to get her to eat. They even let me talk to her on the phone to help ease her. Don't judge the last statement too harshly because I felt completely helpless in the middle of the ocean on a ship hearing that my dog was in such distress and miserable and I had no way to get to her. Thankfully my girl will be ok and is well on the way to a full recovery. However, there is no excuse for what happened or for the lack of appropriate professional intervention to seek treatment for the dehydration. I get the feeling that more of these places will pop up overnight because they are easy to open and people will pay the money no matter the cost. Unfortunately, it may all look legit but do your research and make sure the person knows at least the basics like how to recognize when to take the dog to the vet. Your pet's well being and life hinges on whether the facility has proper credentials and training or is just some dude making things up as they go. read more
