He loves it there and we love that he is safe, cared for and excellently groomed in a friendly and professional environment. I wrote a complaint yesterday, and I see it was deleted. Just a heads up: empathy for client mistakes seems to hold no value for this shop, at least in my case. I made an honest mistake in showing up for my appointment two hours later than the actual time, but that did not help me avoid a $50.00 missed appointment fee. As you can see from my previous review , I gave a positive review of the shop. I left a 20% tip for my groomer each visit. Yet, there is no care for customer loyalty and keeping customers, as evidenced by the owner's response to my missed appointment( which I was very apologetic about, and would gladly have paid a lesser missed visit fee). In honesty, my groomer did a good job with my pet the times I visited, but I will not return to this shop. read more

Kate cancelled my dogs grooming appointment the night before it saying he kept trying to bite her and that she was concerned for her safety. I asked her to please....just keep this one last appointment so I would have time to find another groomer. She bluntly said, "NO". I've moved from the area and Alfie has been to two other groomers since and they said he was no problem, a very sweet dog and easy to groom. If he was biting her than perhaps she was the problem. I took my dog to here for the 1st time. They did such a great job! She looks amazing. They called me to see if I could come early which was great. They only took about an hour and she looks fabulous! Highly recommended! My Cavalier gets very nervous about grooming, but she was so comfortable with Lisa. Normally she is trying to escape while I pay the bill, but she was content to hang out, and that made me happy. She also looked great! I like that they only take one dog at a time, so they don't have to be caged. Today I had an 11:30 appointment. I arrive 4 minutes late so I own that and being late is on me. Keep in mind I was 4 minutes late to a 15 minute window appointment. I arrive at 11:34, open the door and am told to wait outside because there was a client already inside and there is no waiting room for this business. You have to wait outside in a courtyard that is shared by two restaurants and other businesses. IE: Good luck finding a place to sit/stand while you are holding your dog(s). At 11:43, I am still waiting outside when I observe a gentleman approach with his dog. He opens the door to the business and, like me, is told to wait. 11:45 - The door opens and the client that was inside is now coming out. The business owner comes out behind her, sees the man with a dog then looks over at me and says the following: "I am sorry but I do not have time today for your dogs. Besides, you were late so it will have to be another time" I left and made the 35 minute journey back home to write this review. This business owner has lost their passion to deliver a good service. Blaming a customer being 4 minutes late in front of a dozen people in a courtyard is one example. Not providing water outside of a business that caters to pets when its 85d outside is another example of not having passion. Blocking clients in 15m windows of time back to back with ZERO slack for tardiness is another. It is clear to me that this business has poor time management. I say this because the man that had the 11:45 reservation was after my reservation. So why was I sitting outside on a bench waiting during my allotted time slot? That was my time slot and the owner was inside working on another clients pet. It's obvious...Someone up the time chain was also tardy and this caused a cascading time failure and the owner used MY RESERVATION to absorb the problem so that she could reset the clock with the 11:45 time. This cannot be argued based on me being 4 minutes late. It doesn't even matter if I was 10 minutes late. She still would have been working on the client prior to me. I was expecting the business entrance to be empty and the groomer waiting for me. These 15m time chunks crunched together and I am the one that gets the blame. Read the other 1 star reviews here and you will see a pattern with scheduling issues. This is problematic, chaotic and has been going on far too long without being addressed. No passion. Humiliated more like. I wasn't late enough to have been treated like this. So why was I four minutes late? Because this business is located inside a courtyard, there is no parking lot. It's street parking and this is a very busy area of town. So I had to park 5 freaking blocks away. In that 5 blocks, BOTH of my dogs decided it was poop time at different intervals. So when I arrive 4 minutes late holding two bags of poop with two dogs panting wildly from the car ride and walk only to be told to wait outside where there is NO TRASHCAN OR WATER then be told "Oh you were late so too bad" is why I leave one star. Because that 5 block walk back to the van then another 35m in traffic without AC to get home REALLY SUCKED. Reconsider a groomer with passion and care for pets. You can believe all the marketing photos and hype but in the end, this business is destined to fail because the owner has no compassion or passion for customers and their fuzzy companions. Find a business that has actually thought through how to run a business from the eye of the customer instead. I know I will be looking because I will NEVER EVER step foot in this business EVER AGAIN! read more

I made a summer grooming appt. weeks in advance for our cat. The owner called to verify a week in advance. After I took time off from work to drive over there, the owner decided she was too mousy about doing the groom, and refused service, claiming her former employee did the cat grooms. But she knew that the whole time. Our cat is long-hair. As a result of the owner's irresponsibility, our cat is now suffering through a historic heat wave with considerable fur, because of course it takes weeks to get an appointment with a new groomer. read more

We had our dog groomed two consecutive times. Both times they came back with their nails too long. The second time the groomer blamed us for the nails being too long...you see where this is going. The groomer pushes a mid point nail trim appointment, we get our dog groomed at a frequency this has never been a problem in the past. Well fast forward two weeks after the last appointment and our dog breaks his entire nail off past the cuticle. The vet said this would have been prevented had the groomer done a proper job cutting their nails instead of being greedy and leaving them long to upsell nail trimming appointments. On top of this she cut up their paw pads and claimed this was normal for the breed. Also tried to convince us our dog had hip problems because they cried when they were groomed, when we had them examined at the vet there were no hip problems found but told the groomer shouldn't be so rough with them. We won't ever go back. read more

If only every business were as efficiently run as Pretty Paws and Claws ... well, I'd run out of things to complain about, and then pretty soon I'd have nothing to talk about and my wife would be way too happy. So, uh, maybe that's a good thing? Anyhow, the German heritage in me always appreciates expediency. And here's how this went: I made an appointment online on Monday to have my dog's nails clipped the following day. I immediately received a text message confirmation. When I showed up, (it is slightly hard to find, in kind of a mini-strip mall in Sellwood), the groomer was right there and invited my dog to get up on the table (following some brief petting). Then, with a little help from me, she clipped all four paws' worth. Then I paid, and it was over. The whole thing took maybe 90 seconds, and she did a great job. Here's the real kicker: it only cost $5. That's five American units of currency. The last two times I tried to get my dog's nails clipped somewhere, I was quoted prices exceeding $35. And I had to wait. I mean, there's so little comparison here that Pretty Paws must be from a different planet, presumably one where dogs have taken over. I can't wait to patronize this business again, and this is the place you should go for any dog nail needs. read more

When I first asked for a quote, I was told $40, then when I arrived it was raised to $50 for my 11 lb dog. The full service takes 20 mins. This week, the cut was done poorly. Uneven shave that left pieces of the foot straggling long, nicked her elbow, did not give a "teddy bear slightly on the short side" like we asked, but shaved her like a poodle. They forgot to trim her nails, and left some weird poof on the end of her tail. My dog looks ridiculous and like someone did a bad home job. When we complained, the owner took no accountability - I guess she would rather lose the long term potential and keep one fee. We will never be back and will make sure all our dog friends know what horrible treatment we've had. read more

I take both my dogs to Katie to get their nails trimmed. She's great with them --she works quickly which makes having their nails trimmed as stress-free as possible. She noticed today that it scared my corgi if he could see the clippers so she switched the way she clipped his nails so he couldn't see. My "bassador" (basset Lab) moans while he gets his nails dremeled, but she talks to him and he stays calm. Katie's nearby, is good at what she does and is very affordable. read more

KATIE IS THE ANSWER TO MY PRAYERS. Read my other reviews... I'm 'persnickety,' I admit. Katie is 100% A+ all around. She communicates with the animals and holds them in respect. I've seen her talk to my dogs and she's even returned them with the astute observation that one dog seems to have arthritis in his left hip! She nailed it! She had delivered these dogs to my house when I was stuck at home with a sleeping infant and no way to collect them. Her work is true artistry! I have two very hairy dogs and sometimes the summer cuts are (ahem) dumb-looking. Not with Katie! Every time they've come out eager to go to the park and show off the new look. I've never received them back with s nick or a scratch. Their nails are never cut too close to the quick. They never smell like poop or smoke or bleach or ambient yuck. Katie is AWESOME!!!!!!! Katie is the best! I have a blue nose pitbull who thinks she's a cat and just loves Katie and her husband. She takes the time to get to know her customers, both the pet and the pet parent. My dog does not like having her nails clipped and lets Meika, my dog, wiggle around until she sits down again and then continues to cut her nails vs other methods. I can't say enough about Katie's amazing work! She is a cat whisperer. We have a half Persian half Himalayan with cotton candy fur that mats just as easily. We had begun to lose the war against his knots, and this was our last attempt before taking him to the vet to be shaved under anesthesia. We dropped him off with Katie for 30 minutes and she changed his life! He came out with an adorable modified lion cut, and a whole new freedom. Katie is the perfect groomer for my poodle. He hated being in a large, crowded shop with many other dogs. And other shops *always* shaved him down completely. Something about Katie makes my dog so comfortable, he trots right in to see her. And when I come pick him up (usually in under an hour) they are snuggling. His cuts are great. She humors my desire to have my dog look as silly and and much like a stuffed animal as possible. Her prices are totally fair. *and* she made me an Xmas present of my dog's footprint this year!!! I had a 9 am appt today for my daughters husky. Took the dog to work, left work with many things to do for patients. Found a spot to park, as I was exiting the car I had received a text that I was a no show , this was At 9:06. I arrived to the place at 9:09. Was told that I would need to reschedule . It was their policy . The groomer never asked what I wanted done. She kept repeating that this would put the next appointment off. I asked what would happen if they were late. She said they would be rescheduled as well .. needless to say . Not returning there . With that lack of understanding and compassion she did me a favor . I don't want her to work on Sasha anyway. This was a total waste of time . Wonder how this place stays in business with that mindset ! I was told that the appointment was till 10:30. My co workers were waiting to see what I thought of my experience as the location is good for the office and they all have dogs. read more

I don't know who loves Katie more, me or my dogs. I have two standard poodles and I can honestly say that Katie is one of the best poodle groomers around. I can't begin to tell you how many people stop us on our walks to ask who grooms my boys. It happens so often that I started carrying her card to give out to the people who want her number. A few weeks back, at Art in the Pearl, we were asked for the name of our groomer at least three times by people who also own poodles. Besides just being a fabulous groomer, Katie only has one dog in her shop at a time. This is so much less stressful on the dogs. Katie has recommended products for home interim grooming and has been great when it comes to working with the special needs of my older dog. I can't say enough good things about her and I know my poodles think of her as family. When I say, "Want to go see Katie?" they jump up and do a happy dance. My family has taken our golden doodle to Pretty Paws and Claws a few times. The first time they called saying that our dog was too stressed out and that we needed to come and get him. This was his first time ever at a groomer. We went back to get him and they said he was fine and they were able to finish the job. They did a nice job of getting all of his matts out which I'm sure can be a big job to tackle. The next time everything was fine and he looked great. The most recent time they called us again about 15 minutes after drop off asking us to come and get him because he was too anxious. They did not cut his hair at all but did give him a bath and blow dried him. The inconsistency is frustrating. We ended up using our own clippers to cut his hair and he was totally fine, so I am not sure what the deal is when he goes there. In conclusion we will not take him back. read more

The first groom we had with Katie was awesome! She was so great with our new puppy and gives a great groom in general. However, out of the 4 appointments we have scheduled with her, 3 have needed to be rescheduled because she has had personal issues come up with very short notice. The last groom was scheduled 3 weeks in advance, only for her to text us 2 hours before for a personal emergency. We understood and rescheduled with her for the following week. That rescheduled appointment was then cancelled less than an hour before because she "just couldn't do it." I am very supportive of small businesses, and understand that personal emergencies do come up, but a 75% rate of rescheduling is unacceptable to me. My two dogs and I will not be back. read more
