I just adopted a cat last Saturday…read moreand wanted to share my experience: About a week ago I began my search to adopt a cat- specifically searching for a Russian Blue or mixed. After a few failed attempts to contacts owners through craigslist I landed on adoptapet.com and found an ad for a cat posted by Cats Meow. I did a bit of research on their site and reached out to inquire about 'Maurice'. Michele responded a few short hours later letting me know that the cat was still available, and also mentioned another that may match my search. As they operate on an appointment only basis- we agreed on a 1pm Saturday appointment (2 days later) and everything was set. Michele was a joy to work with and made sure to answer the couple questions I had via email prior to our appointment. I made the drive up from Seattle with my best friend and we were greeted promptly at 1pm when we arrived. The shelter has made home in a beautiful classic house near the shipyards, with a series of rooms and catios (cat patios) allowing many of the cats to roam- while other cats are organized into shut rooms, still allowing them space to roam/eat/relax and socialize. I believe she mentioned that they are currently housing about 30 cats awaiting adoption. Again, Michele was an absolute joy- she was very patient and informative while answering questions and addressing concerns, and made me feel very comfortable as a new cat adopter. I ended up adopting Maurice, and she even graciously allowed me to borrow a crate to take him home, as my cat carrier was a bit too cramped. Maurice had a comfortable 2-hour journey, and has been slowly settling into his new space. Everything worked out well, and I highly recommend Michele and Cats Meow to any and all prospective cat adopters- whether this is your first adoption or not I'm confident in saying you'll have a pleasant experience bringing a new friend home. Aside from the catnip mats, FHPS also carries these very sturdy, adorable orca dog stuffies in two sizes. These make the most perfect gifts and have held up well to my dog's chomping and tossing. Totally unexpectedly, they also carry a vegan dog food I'd been wanting my pup to try and it wasn't unreasonably priced! Their pet food selection is extensive and high quality and they have rows of both dry and canned dog and cat foods. I also recommend their locally made dog treats up by the cash register. My dog is a big fan of the squash and beet varieties. Employees are helpful, the store is clean, and parking is decent.

The aisles are tight, so it's hard to get through if others are standing around. Also, the no pet policy is ironic since it is a pet store. That's like going into a baby store and you're not allowed to bring a baby inside. What's also ridiculous is that every other shop in the area has a sign saying dogs are welcome inside the shop. You know it's silly when even the coffee shop allows dogs.

This kennel is the only boarding facility on the island. We would not use this kennel again if there were other options. We found their extra fees excessive.

I had a clutch of accidental mystery snails hatch. There was about 30 snails. The owner said oh we don't take mystery snails. The conversation could have ended there but she felt the need to belittle me and then told me just toss the clutch in the trash! This is completely incorrect information. You have to freeze the clutch completely before tossing. Otherwise you could have snails hatching in the wild over taking ponds and other waterways. But don't worry she told me I could pay her $3 a snail for her to take in free inventory.

This year I promised myself I would get a heated feeder. Off I went to the Wild Bird Chalet. (Yes, I could have looked online, but I try to "buy locally" when I can). As I entered the store, I was met by a cheerful, smiling woman. Julie was her name, "owner" was her game. She showed me a nice array of options that I felt were very reasonably priced. I chose one and asked about maintenance. She patiently explained how to clean and care for my new soon-to-be-purchase. Great shop, great experience. There was quite a few people lined up already and we were one of the last people to be seen before their time was up. They were thorough but speedy! The cost was fair too. Will definitely be keeping them in mind for our yearly and 3 year vaccines in the future.
