What I call a "ol skool" comic book store...just the right balance of items and a decent back-issue selection too.

So, it's nice to see more mainstream businesses continuing to expand into the area This is a very unique shop and perhaps felt a little niche when I walked in. I was expecting to find comics and yes, I admit to being a little out of date as I haven't been a regular comic reader since I was at school but only a few titles were familiar, like New Avengers, for example. However, film adaptations of characters such as the Watchmen have also brought them to my notice However, be prepared to explore and whole new worlds open where the pen, colours and imagination of modern comic creators can take you. There are English titles, foreign titles, even kids' illustrated books. A most fascinating browse and a good place to find an unusual gift

Kapow! Away Boredom…read more Remember how you couldn't wait for your summer holidays when you were a kid? When six weeks off school just wasn't enough? Well my nephew is already bored with four weeks of his summer holidays left to go. He asked me to take him somewhere 'interesting', so we headed to Gosh Comics on Berwick Street. Gosh is a candy store for comic book lovers. It has a great mix of graphic novels and comics from the Watchmen to classics like Conrad's Heart of Darkness. It also has a wide selection of art books, runs events and sells limited edition bookplate prints designed and signed by their authors. Instead of ushering you out of shop, this place has been smart enough to include canteen style seating, so you can look through your potential buys at your leisure and this is complimented by friendly staff who don't bug you. My nephew was officially 'unbored' for about an hour and I got brownie points from my sister for keeping him entertained - good times all round !

Here you'll find an array of design books, tote bags, games, toys and t-shirts. I fell in love with the Moomins at Magma. Who are these Moomins you might be wondering, and where do they live? This family of hippopotamus-like trolls resides in the Finnish forest in a house in Moominvalley. Their irresistibly cute snouts endeared me to them immediately and I simply had to purchase two placemats with their sweet likenesses on them. I have a glass dining table - which is not something I picked out myself (if I had my way I'd eat upon something made of wood) but it came with the flat so...yeah. Plates directly upon glass are jarring so I'd taken to putting down tea towels prior to the purchase of my Moomins. Now every meal is infinitely more pleasurable with these adorable characters on my table.

Yeah, you know what I'm talking about (or recognise that you're exactly the kind of person I'm writing about). Hey, it's fine. I resemble these remarks, too. Enter: Magma. It's the shop where the products contained within lean in the direction of purposelessness. They're whimsical yet thoughtful; they're strange yet sensible. You'll find all sorts of design-related books and magazines, a variety of non-Hallmark cards, a random assortment of obscure games and entertainment, and trinkets/bric-a-brac galore. When you're at your wit's end on shopping for that 'special' someone, pop into Magma to save your sanity.

The staff are on the ball and know their stock. If you are wanting to track down a random old comic, then make sure to ask for Hugh (older guy with dreads), he certainly knows his stuff and has managed to track down a number of specific titles for me. I'm not really into the comic scene these days, but still love finding a random independent graphic novel. The store carries a real diverse range and I couldn't resist the zombie survival handbook last time I popped in. They also stock a lot of 'figures' like Star Wars and Nightmare Before Christmas toys. Some of these can be expensive, but they also make a nice random present for movie fans. If you are into your Japanese manga they also stock a wide range of tittles in English, as well as random merchandise for movies like I mentioned above. Certainly a good shop to consider if you are at a loss for a present.

Better to skim and browse, and what better place to do so than Dave's Comics? A treasure trove of comics and graphic novels, with two little shops in the North Laine, Dave's is a great place to browse and buy anything comic related, from the items themselves to longer graphic novels and figurines and the like. I've always been far interested in comics than the actual stories within them themselves: so many characters, none of them can (really) die, the stories repeat themselves... still, I like keeping up with what happens in the comic book world, and love browsing some of the titles. Dave's is a wonderful place for browsing, it really is. No one bites your head off if you stand there for a couple hours, just looking through books and reading little bits here and there: a very nice service for the toe-dipping fan like myself. When you do actually decide to buy, you'll be pleased to know the prices here are very reasonable as well: a boon since comics have gone from a couple of cents to a couple quid per little book. I'm also pleased to see how many other comic-related items they have too (between their two shops), from figurines to posters to art books to other comic paraphenalia. I wish I had the money to be more of a comics enthusiast: for now, an occasional browse in Dave's will have to do!

They have a modest menu of great quality coffees, made to near-perfection, and a menu boasting of both healthy and not-so-healthy bagels and pastries, which are all equally delicious, (yes, the healthy ones, too). They have decadent toffee cheesecakes and big vegan cookies made with oats and coconut, chewy brownies and high-quality chocolates. Pick your poison, they all pair perfectly with their java. Check out their social media pages, as I hear they usually hold special events that you don't want to miss if you're ever in the area. So, take a chill pill and enjoy.

I ordered ice latte with oat milk, which is pretty impressive as I didn't expect much anyway. It's quite "milky" but since it's plant based, it doesn't make my stomach suffer from digesting the drink (like I usually have to). I like the ratio of coffee and milk in my latte, the drink tastes creamy but neither of the flavor is overpowering. Overall it is a chill, warm, and cozy local cafe. It's also a good spot for 2-3 people to sit down and chat on weekend afternoon!
