Qype User (predic…)

I saw this on Qype and decided to head down this morning for a client meeting. What a lovely charming place! BRILL is basically a tiny CD shop (I didn't really look at the titles for my sins) with a collection of stools and little tables as well as a kind of bench at the back for laptop users (Some were plugged in so I guess they allow power, etc). The cafe part is at the back and the food selection is small but perfect to be honest. I had a toasted cream cheese bagel (PERFECT) and a perfect Flat White. The entire experience was spot on - the staff really friendly and the vibe totally relaxed. The music was a little loud for a meeting but we didn't seem to mind. My friend loved the coffee and ended up having three! Highly recommended and I'm looking forward to going back.

Just what I needed. A cozy place with bohemian feel great music and free wifi and hot tea and coffees. Locals coming in all the time having chats with the barristas.

Definitely one if the Finley coffee places on exmouth market, is it a Cafe or a CD shop ...how knows? :) coffee is very nice and also the crenels cheese and salmon bagel is awesome. For membership cards they use little hand made drawings of animals and characters which is a nice personal touch. :) (photo included)

Though it is very small, Brill has everything I need- records, magazines, coffee and cakes. I don't know why there aren't more places like this around London. I know of a few places in Soho and there is obviously Rough Trade in Brick Lane, but I can't understand why places like this haven't shot up in every neighbourhood. Brill is a perfect combination of shop and cafe and even has free wifi, so is an excellent place to sit, enjoy a coffee and do some work.

Welcome relief for coffee and a quick Wi-Fi fix whilst doing research at the nearby London Metropolitan Archives and Society of Genealogists.

I want to give this joint more stars because the vibe was good but the £5 avocado, feta and dukkah toast took ages to make and was super underwhelming :( It looked real goooood and I was super excited but was lacking seasoning despite the added dukkah. The staff are friendly but the bagels and toasts take ages. On the up side you've got music to browse while you wait.

Camden Lock Books

Barbican, Liverpool Street / Broadgate

I am all for more shops like Camden Lock Books popping up in tube stations. In fact, I really don't…read morethink that tube stations are properly represented for shops. What about the people who don't want to walk up the steps to the outside - they want to make all their purchases within the station? Thankfully, there are not many of those underground dwellers about, and I am certainly not one of them - but I do find myself often waiting for my friends to turn up on later trains here at Old Street tube, and instead of saying "I will meet you outside the cold, wet tube station', why not spend some time in this book shop instead? Camden Lock Books is small, but simply stacked with books. They specialise in new books which are in print, but will gladly track down any older books on request. While the books were mainly all full price, there was a stand with many books on offer. Some had dropped from £7.99 to £2.99. They don't mind browsers, which was clearly what I was. I found Newspaper Bags on sale here- these are the bags made out of newspapers by Indian street children. They cost 50p and the money goes straight back to the charity. I brought a few, and I encourage you all to do the same!

I'd actually walked past this little bookshop a few times before clocking it. I then did a massive…read moredouble take at the knock down prices in the window - £2.99 for great books such as Peter Carey's Oscar and Lucinda! I love bookshops but generally try to avoid them at all costs because I love new books (so smooth! so crisp!) so much I always end up spending way too much money and accumulating more books that I have nowhere to keep. But I figured - £2.99 means it's basically 1993 so these practical concerns cannot be an issue. Of course, I ended up buying a full price book, but by then I had totally justified this to myself as supporting a local business, literature in general and obviously just Saving The World. It's not a very big shop but managed to stock 3 titles (Handmaid's Tale, Wolf Hall and Cloud Atlas) which despite their popularity I have recently not been able to find in such places as a giant Barnes and Noble in Philadelphia. I also heard the owner telling a customer he could order a book in for him. But you really would never be stuck for choice here, it's a great selection and really fun to browse. I may have to start using a different exit...

King's Cross

This is a brilliant book shop to browse in if you ever find yourself bored in Kings Cross. I didn't…read morerealise it was meant to be 'radical' before I ventured inside...but the staff were lovely and there was a huge range of interesting sounding books. Downstairs it seems a little dodgy, (it is basically an undecorated basement covered in shelves) but there are loads of second hand books for less than a pound...and some hilarious old flyers along with the random political books.

Fully justifying themselves as 'radical booksellers', Housemans are purveyors of (largely)…read morepolitical and sociological books. The largest section is entitled Political Thought, other sections include Anarchism, Gay and Lesbian, Socialism, Environment etc. As well as many more "regular" genres such as Graphic novels, Music, Poetry, Art etc. They have another large section for London Writing which has books both about London and books by London authors on many topics. Although not the largest bookshop you're ever likely to find, Housemans fit in quite a lot. They have a downstairs room devoted entirely to second-hand books of all sorts which they sell at £1 each. Housemans stock a large number of periodicals, newsletters and magazines from around the UK, Ireland and numerous other counties - far to many to list here as they claim to stock the largest range in Britain - very few of which stray far from Housemans main interest of political progression and radical issues. They also sell a number of t-shirts with political and environmental slogans. As well as all this they run events in-store such as film screenings in the downstairs room, talks, musical performances and art exhibits, although I don't understand how they manage to fit an art exhibition in their reasonably small store - but, apparently, they do. Political awareness and radicalism isn't going to be for everybody but there are sections of more general interest. I didn't buy anything in my last visit here but I have my eye on a few things for next time. Ian.
