Dave's Comics

Dave's Comics

Dave's is a cool shop. Yeah, it will help if you like comics, but in honesty, if you like a good…read morestory there will probably be something here for you also. The staff are on the ball and know their stock. If you are wanting to track down a random old comic, then make sure to ask for Hugh (older guy with dreads), he certainly knows his stuff and has managed to track down a number of specific titles for me. I'm not really into the comic scene these days, but still love finding a random independent graphic novel. The store carries a real diverse range and I couldn't resist the zombie survival handbook last time I popped in. They also stock a lot of 'figures' like Star Wars and Nightmare Before Christmas toys. Some of these can be expensive, but they also make a nice random present for movie fans. If you are into your Japanese manga they also stock a wide range of tittles in English, as well as random merchandise for movies like I mentioned above. Certainly a good shop to consider if you are at a loss for a present.

I love comic books in the same way that an art lover frequents museums: I like looking at them from…read moreafar and for free, but don't really buy them: too expensive a hobby these days, with all of the hundreds of different books all coming out at different times from different companies. Better to skim and browse, and what better place to do so than Dave's Comics? A treasure trove of comics and graphic novels, with two little shops in the North Laine, Dave's is a great place to browse and buy anything comic related, from the items themselves to longer graphic novels and figurines and the like. I've always been far interested in comics than the actual stories within them themselves: so many characters, none of them can (really) die, the stories repeat themselves... still, I like keeping up with what happens in the comic book world, and love browsing some of the titles. Dave's is a wonderful place for browsing, it really is. No one bites your head off if you stand there for a couple hours, just looking through books and reading little bits here and there: a very nice service for the toe-dipping fan like myself. When you do actually decide to buy, you'll be pleased to know the prices here are very reasonable as well: a boon since comics have gone from a couple of cents to a couple quid per little book. I'm also pleased to see how many other comic-related items they have too (between their two shops), from figurines to posters to art books to other comic paraphenalia. I wish I had the money to be more of a comics enthusiast: for now, an occasional browse in Dave's will have to do!

I was in the neighbourhood when I came across this store, and I hadn't been expecting to see a…read morecomic book store. They looked like they'd moved across the road recently or were about to as there was signage for the shop on both sides of the street. Inside is very much a no frills operation, but one done right. There's three things I've come to expect at comic shops, and that is the wall of new comics, longboxes of older comics and those rarer comics hung up higher. This had all three, was neat and tidy, wasn't too hot and had a series of discounted comics. That's enough to get four stars for this sort of establishment from me! Excelsior!

Now I have experienced many other comic book stores and they do present themselves better than A…read morePlace In Space. That said A Place In Space is primarily an online operation and the walk in traffic is probably a bound to them so they don't go overboard no the way the shop looks. They have a large variety of comic books form Marvel & DC. They have the current stuff you may like A vs X, current X-men and Spiderman books to name a few. They have an extensive stock of older comic books and the larger graphic novels which have become popular. Every time I go in they seems to have a discount on the price of both the comic books and graphic novels, which I am not going to complain about!! Where other shops of this nature also have a variety of models of comic book heroes this one does not have that many, but as I said the main focus of the shop is the comic book. They have a multitude of comics of which the staff know where they all are. The staff are knowledgable and will let you know they are always getting deliveries and it is possible that the comic you are after may come in soon you just have to check back to see. The big plus for me is that I don't have to go into town if I wish to look for a comic book which is a huge bonus to me. So if you are in the area and just want to peruse some comics this is as good a sang without the fancy displays, just comic books.

Unlike a lot of other Comic shops I've experienced you must go to this one with knowledge and be…read moreready on the defensive side. Entering it seems a rather normal set up, with the new comics lining the walls near the back, a set of walls with an array of well shown off product's most can enjoy. However if you are going to look for comics past brand new releases be prepared to search for a while. When visiting (For note, I've gone in roughly ten times in the last year or so) the rows of comics have overtime became rather mixed and well thumbed. Not only do many now live elsewhere such as that pesky Starwars taking a trip into Gotham territory they often don't have any rhythm to numbering either. Secondly with the many jostling about overtime I've seen many issues being damaged past simple corner damage. Bent pages, torn corners and heavy denting upon the front which need to be checked if you are aiming to collect past a one time read. Lastly the owner, who naturally is fine, hard to get a word or two out of him but not very welcoming to friends who have gone in inexperienced. When it comes to comics there's often a similar mindset which comes to owners, they can help those with experience find those specific issues or exclusives around, and to those newbies they suggest some great choices from their own experience. In most I've been to I've at some point found my friends being drawn by the owner giving helpful pointers on great graphic novels to start on. Here however most have been scared off by the bluntness of the owner, not offering any type of help to potential future customers but instead scoffing them off as if not worth the time of place. P.S. Don't tell him you are interested in something, he will try to sell you the kitchen sink. I said I was interested in Harley Quinn, he tried selling me a 1/25 Variant, I told him I already had the issue and was not interested, he then tries bartering, offering the low price of above twenty pound. After refusing further and stating once more, I practically got the cold eye as he let me buy what I was originally there for.

Now, the owners seem to put selling records above comics. I went in not a week ago, and though the store seems to be doing well (it was very busy), the comics were terribly organised. There were random comics laying on top of the boxes which made it difficult to flick through the selections, and the selection of comic books and comic book-related merchandise is much smaller to accommodate (what I've heard are very poor quality) records.
