Dave's is a cool shop. Yeah, it will help if you like comics, but in honesty, if you like a good story there will probably be something here for you also. The staff are on the ball and know their stock. If you are wanting to track down a random old comic, then make sure to ask for Hugh (older guy with dreads), he certainly knows his stuff and has managed to track down a number of specific titles for me. I'm not really into the comic scene these days, but still love finding a random independent graphic novel. The store carries a real diverse range and I couldn't resist the zombie survival handbook last time I popped in. They also stock a lot of 'figures' like Star Wars and Nightmare Before Christmas toys. Some of these can be expensive, but they also make a nice random present for movie fans. If you are into your Japanese manga they also stock a wide range of tittles in English, as well as random merchandise for movies like I mentioned above. I love comic books in the same way that an art lover frequents museums: I like looking at them from afar and for free, but don't really buy them: too expensive a hobby these days, with all of the hundreds of different books all coming out at different times from different companies. Better to skim and browse, and what better place to do so than Dave's Comics? A treasure trove of comics and graphic novels, with two little shops in the North Laine, Dave's is a great place to browse and buy anything comic related, from the items themselves to longer graphic novels and figurines and the like. I've always been far interested in comics than the actual stories within them themselves: so many characters, none of them can (really) die, the stories repeat themselves... still, I like keeping up with what happens in the comic book world, and love browsing some of the titles. Dave's is a wonderful place for browsing, it really is. No one bites your head off if you stand there for a couple hours, just looking through books and reading little bits here and there: a very nice service for the toe-dipping fan like myself. When you do actually decide to buy, you'll be pleased to know the prices here are very reasonable as well: a boon since comics have gone from a couple of cents to a couple quid per little book. I'm also pleased to see how many other comic-related items they have too (between their two shops), from figurines to posters to art books to other comic paraphenalia. I wish I had the money to be more of a comics enthusiast: for now, an occasional browse in Dave's will have to do! read more

Aaah my Graceland-Graphic novels, Manga, Anime, books and comics. Dave's Comics spans two neighbouring shops, one holds all the newer releases and contemporary reads, the other has the archive titles and back issues. I could spend buckets of time and numerous pounds in here. One of my prize finds, without having to pay the extortionate postage prices on Amazon, was the Peter Kuper graphic adaptation of Kafka's 'Metamorphosis'-try and root it out, it's obviously short but it's brilliantly illustrated. read more

I love the frontage of Dave's- graphic, without being obvious. Dave's, as far as a I can see, is a comic/graphic novel mecca. I'm being educated by one of my friends who is far wiser in the way of comic books and she assures me that Dave's has one of the best collections of classics and new releases, names to watch and collect, than any other store she's ever seen. I can believe it...whenever I've been in I have been amazed at the range of material on sale and have always ended up finding something that my mother would like, something I enjoy, something a teenage boys would like. If you have preconceived notions about comic's and comic book geeks you should definitely check this place out- you will be amazed and impressed. Dave's comics is a wonderful little comic store in the North Laines, full to the brim with colourful graphic novels, comic books, and manga. The staff are super friendly, and know their stuff, whilst the stock is very well categorised, making any graphic novel you're searching for easy to find! They also have a 'recommended' section, which is great for anyone unfamiliar with the comic world, or who just wants a colourful, and engrossing text to read. I particularly recommend Maus, winner of the 1992 Pulitzer Prize Special Award, which is an exceptionally moving and powerful biography detailing the author's Father's struggle to surivive the Holocaust. For anyone already engrossed in the comic world, Dave's gets new comics delivered weekly, on Thursday. read more

I'm not a massive comic fan, I just didn't get in to it. However, I am a massive Star Wars geek, I mean massive. One day seeking a new Star Wars thrill, wondering what post 'Return of the Jedi' literature existed, I took a trip to Dave's Comics. I was really impressed by the shop, it made me wish I knew more about comics so that I could appreciate the choices even more. I did succeed in finding Star Wars comics, although they were all actually pretty rubbish. That is not any reflection on this comic shop however, Dave has done himself a fine job. read more

My favourite haunt for graphic novels, Dave's has the usual array of Marvel and DC greats as well as superlative stories like Preacher, Watchmen and Sandman. They also sell figurines like Halo and Nightmare Before Christmas, though most of these you get at their sister shop down the road. Staff are helpfully geeky and patient. The only comic shop in Brighton, Dave's Comics deals in everything from the obscure modern day to the pricey classics. They have fantastic range of graphic novels, individual comics, classics, toys, memorabilia. In find the best way to buy is to look at what covers hold the most interest and go for them. The people working there always seem to be having a conversation with a regular about this obscure person or that, always in depth and always slightly scary. Yet, it's a great place for alternative culture stuff and toys. read more

Dave's comprises of two shops next door to each other: one focusing on the superhero/marvel/DC end of the comic book spectrum, and the other (usually more busy) area stacked full of 'alternative' graphic novels and comics. By alternative, I mean everything else on the market: from whimsical, autobiograhpical portraits of American life, like the touching 'Blankets' by Craig Thompson; satirical, humourous ponderings on relationships such as Jeffrey Brown's 'Clumsy'; historical and political commentary (see 'Palestine' by Joe Sacco); and horror/zombie/monster/fantasy books. Dave's have managed to cram so much into such a small shop. There is even a lesbian, gay and bisexual section, for anyone who might be interested. As a comic's geek I am often in here. Terrific shop with a great selection of mainstream and specialist graphic novels. Friendly, knowledgable staff who are always happy to suggest new titles you may not be aware of. Now open on 2 floors making even more titles available. A real asset to Brighton with a world city selection of items available in our admittedly small city. Like any small local shop if you don't use it , you lose it and The Lanes would be a lesser destination without Dave's so pop in and pick up a 4 colour treat. read more

With a wonderfully diverse stock, including alternatives, foreign translations and graphic novels, and a friendly, helpful staff, Dave's Comics is must-visit for anyone even slightly into the Ninth Art. read more

Great shop, wasn't overly crowded and I went midday on a Saturday, had everything from adventure time to the avengers, a wide and brilliant range of figurines, graphic novels, comics and memorabilia. Till staff were quite friendly but due to the quiet atmosphere and type of people in the shop I felt a bit out of place as I'm used to a sort of friendly, chatty vibe in the comic shops back home. A good comic book shop, I was actually asked by the nice hippie assistant " are you local? " I had to control my sides from splittng with laughter, expecting Tubbs and Edward to appear from the back of the shop any second now! If you like informative, helpful staff, who are willing to chat, then this is the place for you, Old hippies don't die, they end up working in Dave's comics! Not a patch on the comic book shops of the 70s/80s/90s but much cheaper comic books compared to the net. read more

Dave's Comics is the place to go if you are in any way interested in comics, graphic novels or zines. The range of choice is exceptional with anything from Alan Moore to Mark Millar and Marvel to DC. Being a big fan of graphic novel illustration, I find it impossible not to veer into this shop whenever I'm in the lanes. It's well worth spending a while browsing this shop as hidden amongst the popular publications, you'll find lots of independent gems for your collection. read more
