Gosh is such a cool comic book shop, celebrating everything to do with the graphic novel. The staff are complete fanatics, calling each other by their nemesis names, and you'll only ever overhear them discussing things like why Batman is way cooler than Spiderman. It's very funny entering their world of super heroes and villains. Comic books are cool though; they're not simply cartoons but a very special form of silent cinema. There's an extensive choice, from hardbacks that you'll have probably seen in film ('V' for Vendetta, 'From Hell', 'Superman' etc.), to old Marvel comics that you can browse through in coves like a record store, to all the latest imports. Downstairs there's a great Manga section and even an EU translated shelf. Many are imports and for Americana I can't find a larger range than here. The prices range from just £2 for a back issue comic to £40 for the more special illustration-read, commercial artist hardbacks. You cant miss Gosh! and it's a lot of fun, so I think you should call by and become a comic book geek for an afternoon.

Gosh! is probably the best comic store in London, and has been my comic store of choice since 2000, it has the most comprehensive cross-section of popular US, US indie, European, graphic novels and manga that I've seen in any comic book store. They've also got a decent back catalogue as well as a good selection of action figures, t-shirts and original (political) cartoon art for sale. The shop is pretty nicely laid out and looks more like a bookstore than a comic store. This is a welcome relief when you're used to your comic stores looking more like a geeks dusty basement than anything else. It looks like it's aimed at adults, which unsurprisingly is who the clientele generally are. A lot of local UK talent sometimes come in to peruse the stands, for one, I know Gary Erskine has been in the store while I've been there. The staff are friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable about comics and always looking to promote a book they are passionate about. You can find the stores blog here: http://goshlondon.blogspot.com/ Pros - central location - nice layout - wide range of merchandise - helpful staff Cons - can get very busy, especially on Thursdays - quite small (part of its charm though)

I buy comic books for my kid from here. I'm really happy that I can still find old issues of Mickey Mouse.

As I was flipping through the comics, there were nice little reminders in between to let people know that there were other older back issues available to explore and you just had to ask. I asked, and they delivered on some silver age Marvel books. They had DC also but I was short on time. The store is really well organized and easy to navigate and the staff was very helpful. They even "let me down easy" when I was picking through their other boxes when I had to put one of the issues I grabbed two of back to give another customer a chance. Womp womp

Mega City Comics is straight out of a movie. Wall to wall comics, musty smell, long haired rock dude working the counter and a young rock chic sorting out the volumes on the shop floor. The obligatory rock tunes playing over the sound system completes the scene. Black Panther, X-Men, Watchmen, Dark Wolverine, the list is truly endless on what this store has to offer. In hindsight I cannot believe I have missed out on the adolescent comic book phase. The dark energy contained within some of the editions is certainly not for kids, but I'm a big boy now and ready to embrace my sinister side. With comics starting from 99p to limited, hard to find £30+ editions, Mega City Comics is one of my favourite finds.

Here you'll find an array of design books, tote bags, games, toys and t-shirts. I fell in love with the Moomins at Magma. Who are these Moomins you might be wondering, and where do they live? This family of hippopotamus-like trolls resides in the Finnish forest in a house in Moominvalley. Their irresistibly cute snouts endeared me to them immediately and I simply had to purchase two placemats with their sweet likenesses on them. I have a glass dining table - which is not something I picked out myself (if I had my way I'd eat upon something made of wood) but it came with the flat so...yeah. Plates directly upon glass are jarring so I'd taken to putting down tea towels prior to the purchase of my Moomins. Now every meal is infinitely more pleasurable with these adorable characters on my table.

Yeah, you know what I'm talking about (or recognise that you're exactly the kind of person I'm writing about). Hey, it's fine. I resemble these remarks, too. Enter: Magma. It's the shop where the products contained within lean in the direction of purposelessness. They're whimsical yet thoughtful; they're strange yet sensible. You'll find all sorts of design-related books and magazines, a variety of non-Hallmark cards, a random assortment of obscure games and entertainment, and trinkets/bric-a-brac galore. When you're at your wit's end on shopping for that 'special' someone, pop into Magma to save your sanity.

I had to ask the assistant what they actually sold. Oops. "We're an independent gift shop" she replied, a big indignantly. And I kind of think this is one of those shops where you don't really know what they sell. I'm tempted to say 'tat'. It is tat, but it's really nice tate. So you can buy a teapot with a cover that makes it look like it's wearing a 'terrorist's balaclava'. Haw Haw. There's going to be someone out there, who will open the patterned fork and trowel and think that it's the best present they've ever had. But I don't know them. There's a bit of jewelry on sale, some nice greetings cards. Some moleskin diaries. Things like pocket gardens, where bulbs come pre-planted in the soil in the wrapping, so you just open and water. The way I list things you would think the store would be cluttered with junk, but that is not the case. Space is beautifully arranged in a small area. Everything is interesting, I found myself poking and prodding looking for a birthday gift for a dear friend. The hard part is that there is so much to choose from that it takes time to make a selection. Space is not the store for those in a rush and uncertain of what they are looking for. If you have time, it is a wonderful store to explore; it's small so it doesn't take long to look at everything. The hard part is making a decision. I do love that it's a one stop shop. I bought a card, a gift (settled on earrings) and wrapping paper. It's nice when I don't have to rush around putting a gift together!
