Gosh is a welcome addition to this area of Soho. The seedy past of this area is gradually being worn away by Westminster council but this is the one remaining collection of adult shops left. So, it's nice to see more mainstream businesses continuing to expand into the area This is a very unique shop and perhaps felt a little niche when I walked in. I was expecting to find comics and yes, I admit to being a little out of date as I haven't been a regular comic reader since I was at school but only a few titles were familiar, like New Avengers, for example. However, film adaptations of characters such as the Watchmen have also brought them to my notice However, be prepared to explore and whole new worlds open where the pen, colours and imagination of modern comic creators can take you. Kapow! Away Boredom Remember how you couldn't wait for your summer holidays when you were a kid? When six weeks off school just wasn't enough? Well my nephew is already bored with four weeks of his summer holidays left to go. He asked me to take him somewhere 'interesting', so we headed to Gosh Comics on Berwick Street. Gosh is a candy store for comic book lovers. It has a great mix of graphic novels and comics from the Watchmen to classics like Conrad's Heart of Darkness. It also has a wide selection of art books, runs events and sells limited edition bookplate prints designed and signed by their authors. Instead of ushering you out of shop, this place has been smart enough to include canteen style seating, so you can look through your potential buys at your leisure and this is complimented by friendly staff who don't bug you. Gosh is across the road from the British Museum and is perhaps the best comic book shop in London. On the ground floor they have a selection of weekly releases, trade paper backs, and independent comic books as well as some interesting children's books. Gosh is such a cool comic book shop, celebrating everything to do with the graphic novel. The staff are complete fanatics, calling each other by their nemesis names, and you'll only ever overhear them discussing things like why Batman is way cooler than Spiderman. It's very funny entering their world of super heroes and villains. Comic books are cool though; they're not simply cartoons but a very special form of silent cinema. There's an extensive choice, from hardbacks that you'll have probably seen in film ('V' for Vendetta, 'From Hell', 'Superman' etc.), to old Marvel comics that you can browse through in coves like a record store, to all the latest imports. Downstairs there's a great Manga section and even an EU translated shelf. Many are imports and for Americana I can't find a larger range than here. The prices range from just £2 for a back issue comic to £40 for the more special illustration-read, commercial artist hardbacks. You cant miss Gosh! and it's a lot of fun, so I think you should call by and become a comic book geek for an afternoon. read more

Gosh! is probably the best comic store in London, and has been my comic store of choice since 2000, it has the most comprehensive cross-section of popular US, US indie, European, graphic novels and manga that I've seen in any comic book store. They've also got a decent back catalogue as well as a good selection of action figures, t-shirts and original (political) cartoon art for sale. The shop is pretty nicely laid out and looks more like a bookstore than a comic store. This is a welcome relief when you're used to your comic stores looking more like a geeks dusty basement than anything else. It looks like it's aimed at adults, which unsurprisingly is who the clientele generally are. A lot of local UK talent sometimes come in to peruse the stands, for one, I know Gary Erskine has been in the store while I've been there. The staff are friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable about comics and always looking to promote a book they are passionate about. I was in London on vacation and needed some reading for the 10 hour flight back to Los Angeles, so I checked out Gosh! and another near by comic shop. This is definitely one of the coolest comic shops I've ever been to. When you walk in, the whole ground level is independent comics. It's not a huge footprint, but they have great variety and some really cool, off beat books that I don't usually see in comic shops back home. In the back there is a staircase to the basement, which has all the mainstream books. Again, great selection. I was excited to see a shelf of 2000AD books. I'd heard about them, but never really had a chance to dig into Judge Dredd or the other titles. This brings me to the next thing I loved. The staff was really helpful making recommendations. I was excited to read some 2000AD and asked what I should check out. The guy was kind enough to spend a good 10 minutes with me talking about different books, different places to start, etc. I ended up walking out with 3 books and devoured them on the flight home. I don't write a whole lot of reviews, but I've been to enough crap comic shops that I really felt compelled to give such a great shop 5-stars and two thumbs up. read more

Populated by some of the most knowledgeable comic-fans in the world, and remarkably well-laid-out (I particularly like the French Guy's book display), Gosh! is a great location to buy comics, even if some of the people that walk in there have a tendency to stand around looking like they're deeply, deeply lost. The great thing about the shop is that if you ask one of the staff a question about the stock, they'll answer you both as best they can and without any condescension. I love love love reading a good graphic novel. The walls here are literally covered from floor to ceiling in comics. There's also an upstairs and a downstairs! I often have to stop by here when I walk by or stop by the British Museum... usually on a Wednesday or Thursday when the new comics are out. It's also when it's the most packed in this small place. The nice thing about Gosh is that they do price conversions. For example, a $5 comic won't cost you £5, rather around £3. They carry so many graphic novels that I have yet to see anywhere else! I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Gosh is the best comic shop in London, if not the entire country. I went to exactly one comic shop on my trip out there and Gosh was it. I loved it. It was as good as the large comic shops I make trips to when I head down to LA and in a fraction of the space! The best thing was there were many indy comics that I'd have little to no chance of ever finding in the States. I was most pleased and I spent about twelve pounds buying fanzines and small press comics that would give me stuff to read for the rest of my trip. And, the best part was the. There's even a little section of children's books with beautifully illustrated books. They had some Richard Scary classics and I just had to get one. A place like London has many many many comic book stores. Some are great. Some promising and some are downright bad. Gosh Comics is the odd one out. It doesn´t fall in any of those categories. This one is a shining example of what a small comic book shop should look and maybe more importantly must feel like. The first thing I noticed (and loved) was the shopping window. Wich had comic characters painted on it. The second thing was the clerk humming/singing behind the counter. It wasn't any good, but very cool. The staff like working here (I think) and it shows. Walking into any shop and seeing the clerk humming is so much better than the usual bored nod or mumbled welcome you normally get. The personal of Gosh Comics are nice and very cool. Anyway you do not go to this kind of shop for singing or niceties. Right? You visit for the love of the 9th art. And boy did you just fall into a treasure trove. The assortment of comic, graphic novels, indies and zines is outstanding. It is almost impossible to leave this store without buying something. The first floor is the place you want to be. Lots to discover. And don't forget to check out the local books. Go downstairs for the traditional American floppies and assorted stuff. Whatever your fandom is, Gosh Comics will have something for you. Another big plus is that the store is clean and clutter free. In other words, you can bring your wife or girlfriend. I didn't know that this comic book store existed. It was a surprise from my bestie who took me here. The top floor is mostly graphic novels. The bottom floor are single comics, mostly modern and some vintage ones on the wall. It is a small store which has a healthy selection of items. It baffled me why they don't sell board and comic book bags but they managed to find something for me so that my book wouldn't get squished coming home. My bestie and I were having a semi private conversation about conversation and whether either of us had enough in our per diem for the book. It was weird that some of the staff were listing in. They do have a US to pounds conversation chart on the wall for quick reference. We decided to buy Snot Girl number 3 so that we had something to read on the flight to Paris. read more

I was here recently for a book signing and I can't even comment on the downstairs of this place but what I saw of the upstairs hella impressed me! Wow. I'm from Glasgow & I just WISH they had a comic/graphic novel book shop like this one there. Everywhere I looked I saw amazing, colourful graphic novels & books from artists and writers I had heard about online but never actually physically SEEN any of their books in a shop here in the UK. It was both a bit frustrating but also probably very good for my wallet that this place wasn't technically open as such otherwise I would've gone a wee bit crazy...oops. I saw books that have been my Wishlist for a while and others that I knew would make excellent gifts for my nieces. They had a brilliant Children's Books section which frankly isn't just for children! Those books are amazing pieces of beautiful art. They also sell posters and art/comic related items here too. Prices were really good too ~ I was expecting the prices to reflect the exclusivity of the books they sell here but they didn't at all. Bonus. Next time I'm down in London I will make sure my wallet is full and my suitcase is empty so I can visit here again & buy some of these wonderful books. read more

Gosh Comics used to have a hole-in-the-wall façade that beckoned only the geekiest comic nerds. It picked up shop and moved - and got a facelift. And it's now a spanking new endeavour that displays its graphic-novel coolness on its floor-to-ceiling glass-paned sleeve. It's hard to say that the store hasn't undergone a complete transformation, what with its new constant cycle of off-the-street shoppers eagerly flipping through the unparalleled array of indie titles displayed on its ground floor. But for those of you crying sell-out, you'll be pleased to find the lower-ground floor contains all the new comic book releases, trades and manga - and less of the passerby crowd. read more

I think this is now my favourite comic store in London. I came to visit their new premises shortly after they opened and loved it. It's not as big as Forbidden Planet but still I prefer this one. The decor is very cool, very organised and appealing. They have a good selection of graphic novels and magazines, and it's the first time in London I find The Believer in a shop (they must have it in other stores for sure but I hadn't look for it). Now, I thought I wasn't going to like this shop - I thought comics were a bit naff, bit geeky, but it was great. Really really busy, people who go there are clearly regulars and have their pull lists that they go weekly to collect so it has a pretty friendly vibe. But very inclusive to newcomers and just has an epic range of graphic novels, arranged by the artists and also recommendations of comics or graphic novels people could start off with like Persepolis or Maus. Staff are comic nerds for sure which is surely necessary I think. A pre-requisite. They also sell 'bandes dessines' - French comics - which are actually amazing, I flicked a couple and s^$t's the bomb. Really, this is the kind of place to get me liking comics... read more

I'm by no means an expert on comics. I'm not even an enthusiast but the fangirl in me literally had a heart attack when I walked in here and saw the boxes and boxes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics and graphic novels. Look, I'm not ashamed to be an adult who thinks that's just the coolest collection of literature ever. For somewhere relatively small, this place certainly packs in a lot of stuff. I got a copy of 'Blue is the Warmest Colour' here a little bit before the film came out. I was slightly embarrassed at having read the novel in the store and cried after I was done with it. (What? It's a sad book!) The girl at the check out counter didn't look at me like I was crazy so I'm grateful. 4 stars for all the cool books. An extra star for not thinking I'm nuts. Also can't fault this location. Around the corner from a bunch of vinyl stores, bars, brilliant cafes and... Chinatown. Why did I even say all of that? It's in Soho after all! read more

Gosh! Holy comic books, Batman! This shop rocks. A real live comic book store, with really hardly anything more than just that - comic books. I love it. I also love the catty-corner from the British Museum location (especially since, despite the Great Russell Street locale, it's never overly full of tourists). Gosh has a noteworthy catalogue of titles and if they ain't got it, you're only a short stroll away from Forbidden Planet and a couple of other central London comic book shops. Also nearby is the Cartoon Museum on Little Russell Street. Come to think of it, Gosh is comics central for London. The upstairs of this two-story retail space is one of those eye-candy-rific spots in London with all sorts of graphic novels, new comics, rare old (and highly valuable) comics, and other image rich books on display. WARNING: Be firm if you really don't want a plastic shopping with your purchase. I bought something here once and only wanted to put it in my backpack. The cashier would not let me leave without my items in a Gosh logo'ed plastic bag. It was really annoying. He was pretty aggressive about it too. Gosh isn't the sort of place to find a lot of merchandise, action figures or any of the other stuff that fills up so many comic shops these days. That's fine. Gosh is better than that. Gosh sells what's most important - comics - both floppy and the stouter things some people call graphic novels. If you're jonesing for a fix of Marvel or DC super-heroics they stock that stuff. Who doesn't? What sets Gosh apart is the OTHER stuff it sells. Collections of European, British, newspaper strips, underground, alternative, indie, small-press, children's illustrated books, books about comics and comics culture, graffiti art, animation, film and all sorts that fight and lose in the quest for shelf space in larger more mainstream comic shops. There's even a selection of back issues in the basement for those who still participate in that sort of thing. I know - you're thinking this makes it all sound a bit moustache and media-luvvie specs with a knitted tank top. Maybe a tiny bit. Doesn't matter - unlike most other stores I can go in, browse through things I never knew existed and leave with a bag full of new experiences. They know their stuff here and there's not a hint of condescension or elitism about the joint. Hard to put a price on that. Staff are knowledgeable, polite and friendly. It's a family friendly place, it's clean, bright and spacious, activities for kids on special events too, there's semi-regular window painting events, the walls are adorned with original art for sale, there's always a book launch, signing or something happening and the location can't be beat. Berwick Street surrounded by lots of other fun things to do and places to eat and drink. Holders of a Prince Charles Cinema membership need only present the card for a discount on anything that's not already knocked down too. So if you're a regular at the PCC there's an added bonus. Cheap is easily my favourite price. If you like comics and are in London you owe it to yourself to check out Gosh. If you're a visitor and feel like checking out a certain other store by all means get to that while you're here, but you'll be better off checking Gosh out first. Big fan - i really don't know too much about comic books - i will admit i am not as authentic as I need to be to claim any certain knowledge- but for a girl (who spent most of her time reading archies) and a total loaner - i know a passable amount - and i know enough to say that this place is pretty great - its got all the makings of a good comic book shop - the not so clear entry way - the slightly dim (preserve the old comics) lighting - and the carts and carts stuffed on top of each other - of comic books! And the guy who works here is pretty knowledgeable -and I will say pretty cute to boot! he helped me comb through a whole bunch of graphic novels to find something that i might find interesting - - and considering central london - the prices are surprisingly not inflated -- really one of the better comic book stores I've been to in London read more

Probably the nicest comic shop in London. Nice staff and decor. Concentrates on selling comics and graphic novels, rather than the franchised plastic tat which is Forbidden Planet's main focus. There is a particularly good selection of graphic novels/collections, and the basement also seems to have quite a comprehensive stock of back issues. I got seriously derailed by my visit here, spending 2 hours reading the first few pages of dozens of comics. The selection can't be beat, and I discovered so many things while here. The reason it doesn't have four stars is the price. I tried desperately (and succeeded) to walk away not spending more than £10 on a single-item purchase, but only after much searching. One nitpick, which might be true everywhere in the UK for my lack of experience, is that comics with adult content are shrink-wrapped so you can't look inside... though I'm not sure how its decided which ones are more adult than others, as others with nudity weren't shrink-wrapped. Unfortunately, you can't look through these to make a purchasing decision, and as you well know, cover art can be dramatically different from the interior art. read more

Gosh used to be one of the best shops around for back issues, fair prices, lots of new stuff used to come in frequently. Not to long moved to new premises, they have a lot more space and have a good supply of current issues. Back issues, have got better recently, but the bins are never changed and are virtually always the same (never used to be like this). You have to ask to see the better stuff, which I have to say most of the staff have lack lustre, customer service skills, where it seems if they'd rather be at home in bed than serve you. The big guy with the beard is always very friendly and happy to serve, but the short guy with the beard, Thomas I think, comes across very morbid and very depressive, almost to the point of off putting going there. read more
