My review has to do with their Access paratransit service. I lost my wallet on 5/6/2024, and when I called to report it and to see if they could locate it, they told me I had to give them a report and they would look for it when the driver got back to their yard. Whatever that is. Then they said it would take at least a day to get back to me, with any update on the investigation. I don't understand why the people in the call center can't look at the vehicle you were on and call the driver. The phones in the little white buses can call dispatch, so why can't the person you speak to in order to file the report call the driver you had for that ride? I am legally blind, so I don't really have a choice with transportation for long distances. This lack of care and their policy is ridiculous at best. read more

*updated review** So a little social experiment. 2 of 3 of our cars stopped working for a while. More like a year. One of those cars was also getting a makeover. The Misters works in South Orange County and I'm about 5 miles from home. So I volunteered to take the bus home. You know what, in the begining I was okay taking the bus. It was a little adventure. Luckily I work before the sun came up. He dropped me off everyday at work at 6:30am. Then I'd take the bus home or catch a ride or wait at work for him to come get me. Some days the busses came early...some days the buses came late. Some days I would have to run to catch the bus. If the bus was late, then I would miss the transfer and have to wait another 50 minutes for the next one. It totally sucked. People would honk at me. A lot of people would honk in fact. People would wave at me. Some people brought me drinks at the bus stop, asked why I was taking the bus, told me I don't look like I belong on the bus. I guess they felt sorry for me or were trying to pick me up. Some people were genuinely nice. Some were not so nice. If you have to ride the bus, remember these simple tricks. 1) exact change only. The bus drivers do not carry change. They are not a bank. $2 a ride, $4 all day or just under $70 for a monthly pass. 2) Headphones to advoid awkward conversations. I'm nice and talk to everyone. But my niceness is often mistaken for something else. 3) Download the moovit App. Tells you how many minutes away the bus is. Eventually the bus took its toll on me. Took me to a very dark place in my life. Fast forward a year and we sold the broken car (big sad face) We upgraded cars and even bought an extra one just in case. So now only 1 out of 4 cars are not working. Yes we are a Huge car family. Moral is, no matter how dark life takes you, there is always light and things get better. You guys have people driving in small OC bus cars. Some of these drivers are cutting people off. I just say a Kia trying to make a right turn, and one of your cars went on the left side of them and turn when the Kia was turning which is not right. The OC bus car cut the Kia off and that is unsafe. I hope this is not one of the bus drivers. He turned on harbor from Woodbury. A lesson learned. If you happen to find yourself in the OC, make sure you have a car to get around. The public transportation system does not compare to LA. While the LA system might be slow, at least you can expect to catch a bus in a reasonable amount of time. However, they are few and far between in the OC. Most likely due to a lack of public usage. I wanted to head up to LA from Irvine. I was trying to catch the Irvine Shuttle, but just missed out on it by a few minutes. Aimlessly wandered through the city when I finally decided to call the bus customer service line. Apparently the route I needed runs only once a hour. And it took a while to get to the Metrolink Station after I did get on. Fares are reasonable and buses are clean though. If you do find yourself in the OC without a car, make sure to check bus timetables and maps before heading out. I did not do my homework and wasted a lot of time as a result. read more

It is functionally impossible to reach a connecting bus on time, in any of the routes I take. This doubles the time it takes to reach any destination. Its very possible that you will end up setting aside 2 and a half hours of time, to travel 15 miles, in mostly short straight lines, and still arrive at your destination late. Id like to say that its a little bit better in the evenings or the early mornings, but it really isn't. read more

Usually I took Uber before, but after took the bus yesterday I found out that its so convince and comfortable! I don't even worry about the time, because of the routine schedule. First of all: The prices for the passes (1-Day; 30-Day; Pre-paid; etc.) keep going higher and higher. Remember that time when one "bus ride" used to cost around $1.25? Now it's up to $2.00. I mean, a Day pass cost that much back in the day. Next point: I wasn't too impressed with the timing of certain buses. For example, I remembered that I had to catch the 178 line to Von Karman Ave in Irvine one week ago from Costa Mesa off Harbor and Adams; I had to call my counselor at Pepperdine TWICE that I will have to be there about 20-30 minutes later, and they asked whether they are able to reschedule to another time. So, THANKS A LOT, OCTA!! Since when does the customer pay to view the service offerings? I wouldn't pay to look at a menu so why would I pay to look at your service route. Many of these bus drivers are very kind and very hard working. This negative review does not apply to them. This is for the people that decide to run their own schedule and leave their stops whenever they want. Now delays, they happen. Generally unavoidable as a bus cannot generally detour from it's scheduled path. The biggest complaint I have ever encountered with the OCTA is those VERY few times when their busses are early. They do not adhere to the schedule. The specific incident I am speaking of happened today, Saturday September 3, 2022 at 624AM involving the bus driver on the 64 eastbound bus at Main and 1st Street in Santa Ana. That bus was scheduled to leave at 627 am but the driver made the decision to leave early, departing the curb at 624AM. This is a common theme for many drivers and nothing ever gets done about it. The person in charge should be forced to ride the bus as is and see if they can keep a schedule. Unacceptable. read more

Wow seriously, the Orange County bus service is 2 damn awful!! I dont appreciate this service at all. The bus drivers were of course nice to me but the seats are disgusting! Last week i was called to an interview but my car broke down and i had no choice but to take the bus to my interview and i sure damn was not ready to pull out $40 out of my pockets for a taxi. So i took the bus(waited about thirty damn minutes) and as soon as i sat down the kid next to me spilled his juice on my suite!! I thought there were no foods and drinks on the bus what the hell?!? Have you ever ridden the public buses in Tokyo? Somehow, despite the sheer size, population, density, traffic saturation, and formidable street maintenance challenges of the city, the buses run on time. Why do I say "somehow"? Because I'm American, and accustomed to accepting poor planning, crappy service, and ineffective public services. In Orange County, where the roads are wide and no one's out and about at 6:30 a.m. on a Saturday morning along PCH, a bus whizzes by my stop nine minutes early as I approach, incredulous, from 50 feet away. Of course, after decades of underinvestment in public transport (while generations of politicians kept cozy with fat slackers in Detroit), I now must wait 60 minutes if I still want to ride a bus to my destination. I took my car instead -- one more data point "proving" the slimeball politicians' argument that Americans don't want or need alternatives to their precious private automobiles. Gee, I wonder why the bus was nine minutes early. There are many possibilities. Maybe the folks who plan the schedules are incompetent and sloppy. Maybe the management is incompetent too, or never checks the planners' work. Maybe the driver took advantage of the inexactitude of the schedule to build up extra break time at the route terminus. But regardless of the particular circumstances last Saturday, this outrage is rooted in culture. Japan (where bus route planners, managers, and drivers take their work seriously) is a culture of personal responsibility. The U.S. is a culture of hype and entitlement -- and what we get as a result is waste, inefficiency, unfairness, declining living standards, and diminishing esteem. Did you know that Japan's national debt is 200% of GDP? Why would the yen be appreciating so strongly against the dollar, where national debt is "only" about 90% of GDP? Could it be because investors know the U.S. doesn't have the discipline and sense of responsibility to manage heavy debt? Hmmmmmm.......... I'm not anti-American, and I have no intention of giving up my passport. But I'm so sad for my country. I especially hate those commercials saying you "deserve" to have your credit card debt forgiven. Such a twisted, shameful, dangerous way to think. I guess lots of people believe it, because these messages are now as prevalent as those from a few years ago saying, "borrow 125% of your home's value and lower your monthly payment". And we know that lots of folks jumped onto that ridiculous scheme because they believed they "deserved" a newer car, another vacation, a kitchen re-do, and a big screen TV. This is totally outrageous. The city of Irvine with numerous research facilities, wealthy home owners, low crime rates, cleaner environment, but with a rotten transportation system. 1. The buses are not even on schedule. For once I waited for half an hour later then the time it WAS supposed to come. Living in Irvine, it is often not possible to just take one bus to arrive at destination. To travel to shopping centers I need to change multiple buses. To my surprise, one bus' delay can seriously affect my schedule. The other buses either arrive way too early at the transfer points, or just simply don't come at all. 2. Some buses really take forever to come. The schedule is simply designed for the looks. I mean, seriously? A whole hour between each trip? So if I miss it, it is over. I need to sit and wait a whole ENTIRE HOUR! People do not have this kind of leisure to just sit and wait. 3. Some buses end really early, and almost all buses stop the business at around 10:30pm. So there was once I was stranded in Irvine center just because the bus was not on schedule and missed it, the time was 10:30 pm flat. I had to walk all the way back home, a whole strenuous trek of 7 miles, which is simply not worth it. In this society where campaigns and advocates on taking public transport is fairly common, the transportation is still in its developmental stage, experimenting on the mass majority. With such un-professional schedule and drivers' attitude, how can people expect an improved world where we rely on cars less and frequently utilize the public transportation? That is pure non sense! That is exactly why people drive, at the expense of gas. Given the amount of supply and demand, spending on gas and driving is all and well worth the cost, to save both time and energy, by massive measure. read more

Biggest FAIL of what transit is not supposed to be. There was many good ideas in the past of OC light rail and OC rapid buses, but these conservative politicians are more concerned about building more toll roads (not that much people use) than building out public transit to have a balance transportation policy. Good luck driving on the 405/55/5 during rush hour. I live in the LA (in the heart of the city), I never get stranded when it comes to where I need to go. Even Metro has 24 hour bus service if you want go out for a night of drinking instead of driving or paying $50 cab fare. I work in OC, and the biggest fail is, it would take 1.5 hours to get from the Metrolink station to the Irvine Tech Center. WTF?! That is about 2 miles away. Therefore I just bike instead. Their bus service is a joke. Seriously average bus runs every 30-45 minutes? What about kids, disabled people, student or people who rely on the bus for their main ride? Shit! Instead of extending the 241 toll road out, why don't they run 24 hour bus service along PCH, that would sure reduce DUI's. Or a rapid bus line on major thoroughfare. If people are forced to drive it'll continue to strain existing roads and freeways. More DUI's, More accidents and More road rage. I suppose that's what OC resident's want. read more

I ride the bus often and although it has it's problems once you get to know it It is quite useful. I live in Laguna Hills, not a place I expected to have many bus rides to and from but I was very happy to find out that there was indeed many options. With one straight bus to almost everywhere i need to go. I can get a bus to the beach (Laguna Beach) that leaves frequently. One straight to the Irvine Spectrum Mall, and another one that goes all the way to Anahiem through Santa Ana. Okay they have problems. If you need to get somewhere with little notice then it can be problematic and if you are in a hurry to get somewhere far away then it also can be a little difficult. If you google map things in advance though then it usually works well. If you are planning on taking more then one bus round trip i would definitely suggest the day pass. Not only is it cheaper (four dollars for the whole day) but it also is much more convenient then carrying around a bag full of change. The bus drivers have been helpful and friendly in my experience. They often are not very appreciated though which annoys me greatly. If you are annoyed at the bus system you don't need to be calling the perfectly polite and helpful bus driver unmentionable names/adjectives. In my experience the buses have been relatively empty (only twice has their been people having to stand), comfortable, and pretty cool (air conditioned on hot days) Dont expect the bus to be like your private car. And don't expect the driver to be your chauffeur. Come prepared and google directions/ schedules beforehand. They also provide a number to call so you can find out when your bus is scheduled to arrive. Besides once my buses have been on time +/- 5 minutes. Good luck and enjoy your ride. read more

Trying to find route information on a smart phone is impossible. This agency does not have a smartphone specific App. When I tried to access the information on a desk top, It was still bad. I would add that when I tried to complain on their website, the form only allowed me to make complaints against drivers. I had to make up a "virtual driver" to get past a step on the way to submitting my complaint. The biggest complaints I have about most businesses and agencies are the result of the arrogance of management. They want to focus blame away from management to working people. read more

I have called Access today at 9:09am to request a ride and they said right now and I'm like no I need to bet there at 2:00pm and they said call when you're ready and I'm like okay thanks. So I called at 1:31pm and they requested it. Time has gone by. I called access again and they said they will be at my house between 1:38-2:08pm and I'm like okay it's only 2:05pm and then it became later and later and they said they don't have anyone right now in the area to pick me up!!! BUS ROUTE 43, Why do you always show up on irregular times and never on time at all. I had to wait for you for about 45 minutes and three bus all of the sudden came together. BUS ROUTE 60 What a huge disappointment. You keep showing up tardy and never seem to keep your promise like you say. Waited for you a half hour two weeks again. BUS ROUTE 83 What is happening to you? You were my favorite and you failed me because you didn't bother showing up last night when I need you to take me home. I waited for you for about 40 minutes and it seems like you didn't want to show up. BUT now it seems like every bus route I take seems to be following the same trend like the others. BAD!!! I have been riding the bus since 1995 and I have seen many changes that OCTA has gone through. With today's economical hardship this just seems to be a good choice. If you take the time to plan out routes and use all the bus services available, I think OCTA is a great way to get around. You do need to be understanding that nothing is perfect, buses get delayed or sometimes have mechanical problems but to be honest. It's rare. I take the bus to work every single day and to school twice a week...I am rarely ever late. In fact, the once or twice I was late last year, it was my fault. I got to the bus stop late. OCTA offers a lot of discounts to events too. Each year I go to the OC Fair and for the past few years OCTA has offered special direct routes from certain designated bus depot locations direct to the fair. If you take the special dedicated fair buses you even get a discount to the fair. Any issues I have ever encountered while using OCTA has not been any fault to OCTA directly. It was the other people riding the OCTA bus. This is a public method of transportation so you are exposed to other individuals that can sometimes be rude. However, despite some of these unavoidable problems I do fully support OCTA and I am thankful for them helping me to get to the places I need to go. read more

Orange County Transportation Authority is the worst bus transportation services I have experienced in my 48 years of living in Southern California these buses are very rarely on time there either 5 to 7 minutes early or there anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes late taking this into account I have had several instances where I have actually taken the time to get to the bus stop a minimum of five minutes early to make sure I don't miss the bus and because they only run every half hour it's transportation services like this that really help to push ride apps like uber and Lyft to the the popularity that they have. I would definitely not recommend taking these buses to anybody who has any kind of important engagements to attend or is it a position where I'm fortunately like myself cool on the bus to travel more than 20 miles a day read more

I proudly ride the Bus. Consequently I have a more well-rounded view of OC. Although Walking is underrated. On the other hand, we know the problem with that. One woman in Orange, near the Library, almost caused a traffic hazard trying to take photos of me, trying to play cop I guess. So I called the REAL police and reported her. Bus riding has enabled me to live debt-free. I got tired of being robbed by shaky car repairmen, and paying rip-off tickets (my daughter got a ticket for "driving too slow" -- waiting for a chance to turn left near S Coast Plaza -- on her Birthday. Plus there's car insurance, and being stalked by police. I love to read inspirational books while I travel a familiar route, or to disembark while I do something unplanned, like going to Sunday's Farmer's Market. There have been several "express" routes added -- popular lines if your destination is a "major" stop. It is unbelievable how pleasantly air-conditioned some of these buses are. But often you can count on being quite cold when, inexplicably, they leave the air on when it's 50 degrees at night and few people are on the bus. Bring a jacket. Do you want to sight-see? Or are you looking out the window and trying to find your address, or a good restaurant to stop and eat? Well you usually can't see very well out of the windows because of the mesh-ads. The drivers are usually kind to people who are experiencing hardship. Once in a while - very rarely - they're rude to people in wheelchairs. Or a bus doesn't show up. They may fail to correct those who inconvenience others - probably for good reason. One woman literally changed her clothes right next to the driver. And then bounced from seat to seat. I got off. Lol WTHeck was he supposed to do about it while he's trying to drive? For that reason, I say avoid the number 29 Beach Bl. bus unless you are a documentarian looking at story ideas on the Real OC. All the other buses are great. Oops; no. The Number 50 Katella bus is unreliable and can be ultra-crowded, even on Sunday. You can go to OCTA's offices and deal with the one ethnic group only - 100%, exclusively - (AmericanMexicans) and get yourself individual bus schedules. And bus passes. Summer, 7-day, 30-day, student, senior bus passes. Don't ask them a question though. They may get offended, somehow, and "call security" - grinning, trying to show off for the (100% as far as I could see) White bosses there. read more

I've never minded riding the bus. I also never agreed with a former co-worker who thought buses were only for people with a DUI and illegals. Fares are somewhat reasonable and I like the bicycle racks at no extra charge. Most of the drivers are halfway friendly, but you run across some once and a while who could use some serious retraining in their people skills. For us the bus is a great way to avoid the crazy traffic and over the top parking fees when going to the Anaheim Convention center. However, my biggest gripe is that for two years in a row during the NAMM convention a bus has simply driven past the Convention Center stop on Katella and zoomed by. One driver waved at us. I complain and I can't seem to get any satisfaction. The frustrating part is that being a public entity they have really no one to answer to. You would think it would be us, the public, but not really. When a driver leaves a group of people anticipating a ride sitting in the breeze there are no repercussions. Its not like they are going to give you a free day pass for your trouble. You get a generic boiler plate email reply, but for all we know they may be laughing at all of us. If the driver is having a bad day and decides to be an ass again its just tough luck for you. The good news is the buses are everywhere and despite long waits you can get pretty much anywhere in Orange County. read more

I've changed my opinion after riding the bus for a couple of weeks. First a couple of tips. First be early. Seriously early. The bus doesn't wait and sometimes doesn't even stop if the driver doesn't see people at your stop. Second if you're going to a new stop ask questions and make sure you know where you're going!!! The bus drivers are usually super friendly and helpful and really want to make sure you get where you're going so thery're there to help you out. Trust me, I'm the self sufficient type and thought I could do things on my own but in the dark of night, when things are far apart an buses are ready to leave... I've gotten lucky, but don't risk it. ASK! The bus can work and be a great way to get around. It takes a bit longer, and you do a bit more walking, but you see things in a different light and you get time to relax. Plus I've met some interesting people. Students from Germany, visitors from Baltimore, and a lot of locals just getting around. It's turned out to be an interesting sojourn while my car was being repaired and now that I now how I may just institute a weekly bus day as an environment move! 20 days ago this was my 1 star reweiw: Okay so it's my first day trying to ride the bus so I will update this if I ever do get on a bus, but.... I live near Beach and Atlanta in Huntington Beach. I was walking to the bus at Beach and Atlanta in Huntington Beach and crossing the street to the bus stop at 8:55 this morning to the 8:59 bus only to see it cruise on without stopping. It seems the next stop was at Atlanta and 1st. Missed that so walked to 1st and PCH for the 9:20. No bus appeared. An African American woman in a car came and parked in the Dairy Queen parking lot and asked how long I was waiting said something about a window and started to drive off. I chased her down and asked what a window was and she said it was a bus and I was to get on it. Okay 10:11 and no bus or "window" has shown up. I planned this so carefully last night to get to my volunteer job which starts at 11:00. Now I wouldn't even get there if my car was working. Thumbs down on public transportation and I so wanted it to work as an environmentally sound alternative. How come it works in every other country? 10:17 and no bus. Remember I left my house at 8:45...I got on the #1 bus at 10:30 and the driver was very pleasant and welcomed me so I raised my review from 1 star to 3. Of course, I'll still be telling everyone how frustrating the experience was...11:47 and we're back to 1 star. The driver of the 121 was an idiot! My stop was closed and he directed me to take the free Passport in Long Beach but couldn't articulately explain where the stop was and then I get there and it doesn't go where I want. All I wanted was to make my 11:00 volunteer shift at the Aquarium. It's 11:51 and now I have to walk from Long Beach Boulevard and 1st...oh joy. I'd give less than 1 star if I could. I have been riding OCTA for well over a decade now with little hassle. As of late though, it seems as if I can't get from one job to the next without some sort of delay! I haven't made a transfer to my next bus in weeks! I have been having to spend lots of extra money on Lyft just to get to my second job on time! And I know OCTA is not going to refund me! I feel stuck because there's nothing I can do but complain to a company that I don't feel cares. If they did, this wouldn't be happening, especially as much as it does. I think if OCTA really did care, they wouldn't outsource the 71 route to an outside company that I know doesn't care about their performance! I just wish OCTA would fix this seemingly easy problem... afterall, they already have my money. read more

I first took OCTA back in 1997 on this really weird journey of mine using transit to get me from Del Mar (immediately north of San Diego), to Huntington Beach, actually in Orange County. It took two North County Transit District-NCTD buses to get me to the Carl's Jr. in San Clemente, where Iäd connect with a 91 OCTA bus. That took me to the transfer point with the 1 bus, which basically followed CA State Route 1, IIRC. This all may be irrelevant, as routing has surely changed since 1997. Fast forward to February 17th, 2011. I Amtrakked up to Fullerton Transportation Center. Beautiful building with an ample, and close, bus bay for OCTA. I walked up to Dock 4, which is where the #26 buses sit. Not too much of a wait, but then I wasn't on a time frame. So, I board the #26 when it pulls up, confirm that is is going to Nutwood and wherever the Mariott is. The lady driving confirms that it stops about a block away. VERY courtious and professional. "Yes sir, yes maam", etc. No sweety or honey or any of that. The bus itself was a little odd, with disabled seating actually towards the middle, not upfront. But it looked like the bus was equipped both front and back, so it was a moot point. It was a pleasant bus, an NABI, I'm pretty sure. When I made the Del Mar-HB journey, I rode RTS buses, which were very pleasant and comfortable as well, but are now outdated. All in all, very pleasant journey. Look forward to next month. read more
