This has been the most incredibly frustrating experience ever. I am an RN so I understand that working in healthcare is demanding and difficult, however, what I've experienced is unacceptable. I made an appointment with dr. Chan 3 weeks ago to follow up about my thyroid (and an unrelated swollen lymph node). He ordered labs and two ultrasounds (one for my thyroid and one for the lymph node). I got the ultrasounds done the following week. The ultrasound of the neck/lymph node was uploaded into my chart as well as my labs. The thyroid ultrasound, however, was missing. Although I believe it is their job to follow up with the imaging center to get those missing ultrasounds, I took it upon myself to be proactive and get those images sent over to Optum. Finally both ultrasounds were uploaded into my chart. Still no call or anything from Dr. Chan or his assistant. I've sent messages in my chart asking if I can get a call regarding my results. No call, nothing . Only a message from Dr. Chan in the my chart app saying he is going to refer me to endocrinology and that his MA would contact me asap with that referral (still no peace of mind on my end...are my results concerning to him? No call, nothing clarity). Days go by and still no referral or call from either of them. I call Optum again and the call center lady said they would send a message over to them telling them to call me asap. Two more days go by still no call. I message again on the my chart app asking for that referral. All I get back is a screen shot from his MA of the different names and numbers for Optum's endocrinologist. No message. No context. Just a screen shot. I took that as "we referred you to these Optum endocrinologists" I call the seal beach office where the endocrinologist is located from her screen shot, and what do you know...they told me that dr. Chan didn't actually refer me to the endo.... I return to the my chart app messaging to let her know she didn't actually refer me to anyone. I call Optum again and get the same call center personal...the lady on the phone explains how it is unacceptable that no one could pick up the phone and just give me a call with my results and with referral information. She put me on hold said that she just talked to the office manager for Los Al and that the office manager would be calling me within the next 5 mins because what I've been through has been unacceptable.... Well, it's been 2 hours since that "5 mins" and still no call and their office is closed now. Absolutely ridiculous. I just need a referral to what seems like an "urgent" matter regarding my thyroid and I can't even get a 5 min phone call or response from my provider or his assistant... read more

Dr. Backer is the best! I had to fire my previous Dr ( not with Optum)because she said she didn't have time to communicate with my oncologist. Dr Becker picked up the phone during my first visit and contacted my oncologist. He truly does care about his patients. Kassandra is amazing at helping with referrals, vitals and appointments. I have been satisfied with Optum Los Alamitos location until this week. Thursday morning I started with severe Urinary Tract Infection symptoms. I called and of course a maze of recorded choice, finally got a human but I think it was a call center. Relayed my issue they took all my information and said I would get a call back. Someone did call me back and said an order was sent to Labcorp for a urine test, I went right away. Waited till the next day hoping to hear from someone from the office which I didn't get so I called about 10:00, again the call center took all my information and said someone would call me back. I waited until 2:00 knowing it was Friday and didn't want to suffer through the weekend in pain and all the other symptoms. Once again I was told someone would call me. Again never got a call. I am appalled and disappointed at the lack of caring and consideration for a patient suffering in pain. Today Saturday, I called the office and was able to connect with the on-call nurse who was very caring and compassionate. Within a few minutes she contacted the on-call doctor and an antibiotic prescription was waiting for me to pick up. It's terrible how you can't contact or connect with someone actually in the office. read more

One referral was for someone that is NOT under my insurance coverage and it's not even under my group. The other referral was for my left shoulder but it says in the referral is for my right. I'm giving this place two stars only because I like my doctor. Optum's customer service, whether at this location or extended call center is terrible. I average a 20+ min hold each time I call. Sometimes I call because their site is down, I am returning a doctor's call... I mean just horrible. This frustration experience makes me eager for November when I can switch healthcare providers entirely. Avoid this place, you'll wait endlessly on the phone before finding anyone who delivers quality service. By the way, I've been waiting for 5 months to get some medication approved. So bad, it's shocking. My doctor is great! But dealing with anything else is REALLY bad. I'm now trying to get my records and here's the directions. Please follow these steps: Log in to your MyChart account. Navigate to the Sharing Hub. Select "Request formal copy of health record." Choose "OptumCare California" as the organization. When I go to my chart to register and search for OptumCare California there are zero responses. Last time we tried to get an appointment it took 27 minutes make a simple appointment and it was for 3 and 1/2 weeks out. When you do a search for optimal Los Alamitos, go to their page and dial the number it's not even the right number; it's been that way for at least 6 months! When you get a hold of somebody they're frustrated that you're calling them and send you over to another office. Last time I tried this I was hung up on twice. In person isn't much better. Office staff will often times apathetically ignore you. The last time we were there a nurse from down the hall - after seeing a standing in front of somebody for an awkward period of time came over and tried to help... We finally left. read more

They used to be great even a year ago, I've been coming here since I was 19 years old now I'm 40 and this year the costumer service has gone down the drain. The front office ladies take forever to check people in and it makes you late for your appointment and then the providers don't take you. But the ladies in the front take their sweet time to check you in laugh walk away from the desk is awful the costumer service and front office staff are trash the lines get huge! Horrible care quality, I'm highly dissatisfied! This is like the 6th time this Happens to me with the front office staff. Totally lost my morning from work my appointment was at 8:20 got here at 8:29 waited in line as the two front office ladies had two ladies they were helping by the time they got to me it was 8:33 mind you the black girl sees me there, continues to laugh, makes eye contact with me like 40 seconds go by then she says I can see you! At this point is 8:34 and she said oh you are too late for your apt. I told her I was standing there since 8:29 she said I gotta ask the provider. Then she walks away from 8:36-9:02 (another lady came to ask if she was helping me I told her I guess) then she says no Tammy is not gonna see you she's with another patient. I said you think is been past 30 min of course she is! I said I was literally here by 8:29 and in line and that's why she can't see me she said that's not on us is the provider will you like for the provider to call you back I said yes, then she said we have no more apts for today. Can you come tomorrow I said no I have to work I can only come before Xmas now. I reschedule for the Dec. 22. I hate this place I hate Tammy and the front office people they are awful! His name is Dr. Charles Maples Jr. Dr. Maples earned his Bachelor's degree in Biology from UC Riverside, a Master's degree in biblical studies from the International School of Theology & a Doctorate degree from College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific in 1995. He served as a resident physician & completed his internship & residency in Family Medicine at Downey Community Hospital. He was licensed in 1996. Dr. Maples was exposed to medical knowledge & values early in life. He grew up with a father who was a family practice doctor. Both he & his brother are also doctors. He is married. Both his wife & daughter are teachers. My husband chose Dr. Maples as his primary doctor in 2015. Dr. Maples has excellent bedside manner, interpersonal & communication skills. For over 10 years, Dr. Maples provided quality care, which is the reason why we followed him from his own practice, through when he was with a group and now with Optum Los Alamitos. We are a fan of Optum's patient portal & Patient Plan which provide a snap shot of your visit and care. As PCP, he is the first person my husband talks to when he has a health issue, preventing or treating a disease or need a referral to a specialist. Since we are prepared with a list of concerns that need to be addressed, doctor's visits are quick & productive. During Covid, Dr. Maples made himself available through telemedicine & by phone. In March 2020, Dr. Maples acted promptly & responsibly when I called him & informed him that my husband was vomiting vile, he advised me to take him to ER immediately. Ambulances were taken up by covid patients. Per Dr. Maples' advise, I took him to ER. ER discovered umbilical hernia which required an emergency surgery. ER informed me that if I had not taken him to the hospital when I did, he could have possibly died. Dr. Maples was instrumental in my husband being alive today. He is a special doctor. Lack of communication comes from the manager Michelle. I had an appointment and got my lab and mammogram orders. The mammogram place they sent me to is ridiculous. I called 3 times to make an appointment with no luck and no voice mail. I drove down to make an appointment and the front desk person said Angel would have to call me to schedule. I drove back to Optum to request a change. A week later and no one has updated me. I drove back to Optum and requested to speak to the manager. After about 30 minutes she comes out and brings me to her office. At no time did she tell me her name or confirm that she was the manager. After stating my complaint of no communication- she stood up and tried to escort me out. I told her that the lack of communication here starts with her as the manager. I asked her name and then she told me it was Michelle. But when a patient has a complaint managers need to listen, be empathetic and then recommend some solutions. It's Management 101. Not only did it take me a full day to get needed medical care, but getting on-going prescriptions moved to another CVS Pharm cost me a whole other day and a mountain of frustration. I had gone to this place since the late 1990s and saw Dr Pauer. For years she was wonderful. In 2019 my insurance changed and I wasn't able to go here anymore. In 2024 I was able to go back ( once again insurance changed). When I went back, Dr Pauer was stand offish and didn't even examine me. I had an active rash from an allergic reaction, and she didn't look at it, she didn't check my lungs, heart or anything. She sat behind the computer the whole time, then walked out and didn't come back. The part that shocked me the most, was the fact that I had lost over 100lbs since I saw her last, and she didn't even congratulate me on that! I think she needs to retire, her heart isn't into it like she was before. It's sad because she was a good doctor. read more

It's almost impossible to reach your primary physician and the care is cursory and extremely impersonal. They "don't take sick people," if you can believe that. 8/13/2023, I have over the past couple years become more disappointed in not only my primary doctor but the other doctors and PA that I have seen here. When they used to be Health Care Partners a few years ago my doctor would spend more time with me (like 5 or 10 minutes more with me at least) talking to me and explaining things and giving me healthier or holistic options to consider, but these days he, his PA and the other Indian woman doctor in his office spend like 5 to 7 minutes with me on my visits and don't even talk to me about anything. I told them on several different occasions over this past 1.5 years that I was on a vegan diet in my quest to lower my cholesterol naturally from the 230 range to get it down and my LDL from 130s down as well to the normal range, but not once did they say anything about the vegan diet could lower my Vitamin D level and cause my body to get very tried, fatigued, muscle weakness, dizziness and to be the cause of the cold that I had twice over the past 3 months. It's been rare over the entire course of my lifetime that I would catch a cold but seems that over the past 5 years having low or deficient in Vitamin D (low 30s and 20s) that I started catching at least one cold each year and the first time I had the flu was in October 2022 when I caught Covid that lasted a week along with a flu. All due to the doctor and the doctors at the Optum urgent care not caring nor thinking to check my Vitamin D level. Even when I asked both verbally and in writing on the patient portal for a blood test 8 weeks ago to check on my Vitamin D level the PA ran several different blood tests instead of the one that I asked for. It wasn't until last week that I found out through a blood test that my Vitamin D was deficient at 22 ng and has been low (low 30 or 32 or low 20s) for years which is why I have always been tried and fatigue and low energy and moody for the past 6 years and had lightheadedness and dizziness off and on especially during the hot summer months of July and August. Since Vitamin D deficiency is so common among the general population, why don't doctors check this first in any blood test they initially run??? As a routine blood testing protocol. Unless the doctors just want to keep their patients feeling sick, tried, weak and dizzy all the time just to keep patients coming back into their offices on appointments to keep billing their insurance for unnecessary medical procedures. Beware of a shady business practice from this place!! Preventative care is covered by insurance. To make more money, they will schedule an "office visit" so they can charge you and your insurance company for an extra unneeded expense. I first came here in December 2022 and scheduled my annual physical because I know that preventative care is covered by insurance. A nurse came in and took my vitals. Then the doctor, I think her name was Pauley, came in, spent about 10 minutes with me, then said the front desk would schedule my annual physical. Confused, I said I thought I was getting my physical that day. No, she said, they would have to schedule it. My physical was scheduled for THREE MONTHS later in February 2023. So I had to take time off from work again and drive over there. This time, the doctor took my vitals then checked my back for moles. She left and a nurse took my blood. All easily could have been done on the first visit instead of making me wait three months. When I got the bill for the office visit, I called them to fix it. First of all, it is really difficult to get anyone from their billing department. They refused so I called my insurance company for help. They still refused to write off the office visit. I filed an appeal and lost, I still refused to pay. My insurance company said they would make a note of it in their database and if enough people complained about then they would review this business practice again. So if you are a new patient and going for your physical, make sure they give you the physical on that day and not try to charge you for an extra office visit. And if you have already been cheated by this scam, then please file an appeal with your insurance company especially if you have Anthem. We can do something to prevent this from happening to other people again! read more

TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!! it started when I called to make an appointment. The doctor I had chosen as a primary physician did not have availability for 4 months! I asked to see a different doctor, the women making my appointment said all physicians at this location accepted my insurance. She screened me over the phone for COVID as I had a runny nose. She said it was fine and continued to book my appointment. When I arrive for my appointment, front desk takes my copayment, only to call me back over to tell me that the providing physician does not take my insurance. I told them ok then you need to figure something else out as I wasn't the one who made this appointment. She blamed the call center for the mistake. Then, the office manager comes out to say that because I have a runny nose, an in person appointment wasn't an option and that I would need to do a video appointment. After I agree to this and leave, they call me back to cancel my video appointment as the doctor was running behind and that because I was going to urgent care for my immediate needs, my other concerns were not urgent. I am canceling with OPTUM and having NOTHING to do with this TERRIBLE UNPROFESSIONAL DOCTORS OFFICE!!! Wasting peoples time and money. They kept changing their reasons as to why I couldn't be seen. First it was the doctor, then it was my symptoms, then it was she's running late. I asked for a refund of my copay, we'll see if that even gets reversed. SHAME ON THE OFFICE MANAGER for not being hospitable and figuring out a way for a patient to be seen, especially a first time patient. If I could give a minus I would. The Dr does not want to give referrals. My husband almost died due to the fact that the Dr put him on potassium. And he is now in stage 4 kidney failure. So now working with a kidney specialist to get it under control. He also was refusing to give us a referral for an ear nose and throat specialist. Claiming it was nerve damage. I don't know if Optum is bureaucratic to a point where it's nearly non-functional, if every department outside of the doctors themselves are incompetent, or both. On September 1st, I received a call at 8:50AM from a male receptionist asking me to schedule an appointment, and was told that bloodwork had been sent to Quest Diagnostics. I set up a virtual appointment for 9/21 at 2:40PM, and an appointment online with Quest on 9/13 at 8:30AM. On September 13, I arrive at Quest and they tell me no bloodwork has been sent. So, they make me call the Doctor's office to request the lab order. I called what ultimately seemed like not a direct line to the office, and they said they would fax it to Quest. I waited for 30 minutes. They didn't send anything. So that is TWICE where I was told the lab order was going to be sent, and it wasn't. When I received a text message on 9/15 asking me to confirm the appointment with a Y or cancel with an N, I responded with "N." So, 9/21 rolls around and I find a voicemail reminding me of the appointment I cancelled. I called back only to speak to FOUR DIFFERENT PEOPLE in order to get that appointment cancelled. So, not only does their appointment system NOT WORK, apparently I have to get through FOUR people before someone knows how to CANCEL AN APPOINTMENT. The incompetence is ASTOUNDING. I am never going to another Optum facility again. On top of this Dr. Markman is just a mediocre doctor. Combine a mediocre doctor with the WORST, most INCOMPETENT staff? That's a hard pass for me. A mediocre doctor, I can deal with, but I don't know how this place still exists with 9/10 people having no idea how to do their jobs. read more

I've had dr maples for almost 20 years and never had a problem with his practice or staff. UNTIL NOW... My issue is not so much with him but it's with OPTUM. It's been almost 2 weeks since I got blood work done and have not heard anything from anyone. I never had this kind of problem before with his practice and this is my first (and last) experience with Optum. I just so happened to create an Optum account on the app and found my blood tests results were uploaded. No one told me even to check. Turns out my cholesterol numbers are high and I'm trying to speak with Maples but he won't return my messages and they keep saying he will call me. Very frustrating and leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Now I'm going to have to get a new PCP and probably start the process all over again. Again, I never had this issue with Maples or his staff in the past. I always got my bloodwork back within a week tops with notes on what I should do if there is a problem. He would usually call to discuss. Crickets now... I hope he understands how horrible the service is with Optum and he leaves this POS provider. read more

I am extremely disappointed with the care I received from my primary care doctor. Despite being in a great deal of pain due to carpal tunnel in both my hands, all my joints hurting, and headaches and neck pain for over a month, my doctor told me to return to work immediately. Did not recommend work restrictions. We discuss that I was going to wait till Friday to see how my pain was. He is told Veronica that I should return to work. Furthermore, he gave me a referral without discussing my aching and pain issues, and only suggested that I apply creams. When I mentioned my headaches, he dismissed them if you and said he did not want to "start a whole new thing". I feel that my doctor did not take my concerns seriously, and his lack of attention and care has caused me undue stress and frustration. Overall, I would not recommend this doctor to anyone seeking medical care. His inadequate treatment and dismissive attitude have left me feeling helpless and unsupported in my journey toward better health. read more

I went in to see Dr. Maples at Optum in Los Alamitos and was diagnosed with arthritis in under 10 seconds without him examining/comparing either of my hands or even touching my sensitive thumb. When I asked for an exam, I was quickly dismissed with a prescription for a cream. Before I booked the appointment, I confirmed that they had an xray on sight, and was told twice that they do. As Dr. Maples was quickly exiting the room, I asked for an xray and was told not only does the xray not work but since arthritis does not show up on an xray, a referral was not needed. Dr. Maples was rude, does not tolerate being asked any questions, and walked out of the room as I was still talking as though I was wasting his time. The duration of my appointment with Dr. Maples was under 2 minutes. Dr. Maples has earned 1 star only because it is the lowest option available. Do not waste time nor insurance. Dr. Maples has been my primary care physician since I was a teenager, always helpful and his staff has always been amazing. In fact, they have been life saving, a year ago my wife became ill and we bounced around from urgent care offices on the weekend with claims that she had food poisoning until we were able to go in, once we were there they diagnosed my wife with having a fatal condition and had us rushed to the ER to save her life. Had it not been for Dr. Maples office recognizing her symptoms I would have lost my wife a day later. read more

I took my mom to see Dr. Maples her primary care doctor. I took her because she was in the hospital in Bakersfield for two days. She had very high blood pressure episode. The doctors there were very good. When we saw Dr. Maples I gave him the final reports from the doctors at the Hospital she was at. He didn't read them and just gave them back to me. I asked him if he could give me a referral for Gastroenterology for the stomach ache she has been having for awhile. He said she didn't need a gastro workup she's 90 as if she not worth the trouble or expense and to take antacids not knowing what caused it. I told him I would like her to see one but again he refused. Then he wheeled his chair between me and my mom. He said you just take one pill and that is all she needed. I told him that my Mom forgets her medication or if it makes her feel funny or hurts her stomach she won't take it. I told him I know my mom and she will not take them. He basically told me to shut-up and leave the room. I told him that I will not leave the room. I also asked him for a referral for a Neurology for her because she is in the early signs of Dementia. He said no. He wheeled his chair close to my Mom and she is 90 and we all lose our memory and that there is nothing they can do for her. I said excuse me that I have two medication that I have been told can help slow the progress if Dementia. He still refused. After that he said he was done with me and open the door and left the room. So my mom and I left and went to the front desk and I asked for release forms from this doctor and took my mom to my doctor for her care. I feel this is detrimental for elderly patients. He just wants to give pills and be on there way. I love my Mom and want her to have the best care she can have. This doctor is not that. I DON'T CARE WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU. IT'S NOT MY PROBLEM. Said CHARLES MAPLES D.O. Yes Dr Maples actually said that today. After an urgent care visit on Friday, I was told to get a referral from my primary care doctor. With a change in insurance, I had a new doctor, Dr. Maples. Dr. Maples office couldn't see me for a referral (insurance required) to an ophthalmologist on Friday, the first appointment was Monday. The office girl Cindy gave me the wrong address 3371 instead of 3771, so I was late by about 15-20 minutes. They had no one waiting or in the back of the office at 11:30 am but were worried they wouldn't get to lunch by noon. I pointed out the receptionist's error with the address, her failure to mention that parking is two blocks away and that she hadn't mentioned the new patient information sheets are on some web site, but I was willing to fill out the forms quickly because all I really needed was a referral to an ophthalmologist. She came back from talking to the doctor saying that he really wanted to go to lunch on time. I pointed out it was still twenty-five minutes til noon, we could do this. She said come back at one o'clock. I told her I had a follow-up appointment with the urgent care doctor at 12:30. She said no they couldn't see me, they close for lunch from noon to one. I let them know I didn't need the whole new patient visit, just the referral because I'd already seen by the urgent care doctor and I was told by the urgent care doctor that I could go blind in the one eye without treatment. Charles Maples D.O. came out of the office and argued with me about why he couldn't see me. He said he couldn't see anyone after 12:15. I pointed to the clock it was 11:50 am. He answered that I was rude. After I said I just needed a referral, I was told I may go blind, he said he didn't care what was wrong. He wouldn't see me. He wouldn't refer me. It wasn't his problem. Charles Maples is fat, unhealthy, uncaring and a hypocrite to call himself doctor, definitely not interested in helping people in distress. I am not typically one to write a review but I want Dr. Maple to know what an asset Cindy is. Dr. Maple is the primary care physician for my 23 year old daughter who has had health issues since the end of Nov 2018. She has HMO insurance, so she has had to get authorizations to see specialists. Since the end of Nov 2018, my daughter has seen an obgyn/gynocologist, then two urologists, then a vascular surgeon who performed an ultrasound and discovered a 10" mass on her spleen. The vascular surgeon was very concerned with the size of the mass and wanted to perform surgery to remove the cyst and the spleen, but had to refer my daughter to a hematologist/oncologist to make sure there were no cancer cells in the cyst. We want to get a 2nd opinion about the cyst removal as we didn't want to remove the spleen. With my daughter being involved with intense college courses which requires heavy studying, and also work, I had to step in to assist her with follow up calls, asking questions, etc. I quickly learned that not only do we need to look up the doctor to see what type of reviews he/she has...but the customer service that the front desk provides is just as important! Calling the different specialists, Blue Shield, and my daughter's primary care provider Dr. Maple has been time consuming and frustrating to say the least. Some of the employees seem to be overworked, underpaid, overextended, and as a result, come off as rude and uncaring. I called Dr. Maple's office per the advise of the one of the specialists and talked to Cindy, who handles the authorizations. When I explained our frustration, she asked me for the phone #s of the different specialists so that she could get additional information. Cindy was sympathetic and took the time to hear out the hurdles we've had to face and explained what should be done, and she would follow up with our specialists to get additional info. When I warned her about a specific office, and how certain employees were rude and abrasive, Cindy's response was, "Don't worry, I've dealt with offices like this." As sweet as Cindy was over the phone, she came across as an advocate for the patients. I mentioned this to my daughter, her response was "I told you I liked her." No, we don't like Cindy. We love Cindy! Cindy is FIERCE! We need more people like Cindy in this field who care about the patients. Excellent customer service should be recognized and praised. Often we get great service which is expected, but will not take the time to post anything. However, when we are disappointed or angry with lack of service, we are sure EVERYONE knows, whether it's on Yelp or social media. Dr. Maples is a great doctor! Thorough and not a know it all! The office is always able to squeeze us in for an appointment. I agree with a previous review, stating that Cindy is such an important asset to the office. She is professional, courteous and seems to know all the answers for the business side of office visits! This year my husband and I switched insurance companies, and had to find a new PCP. Dr. Maples came highly recommended by my sister and brother in law. My husband saw Dr. Maples right away starting in January and really liked him. I called last week to schedule a physical, they got me in for an appointment the very next day. I was able to print the new patient forms from their website, which was convenient. I arrived a little early and was seen on time. Both the front office staff and the nurse were nice, friendly and professional. I really liked Dr. Maples! He took plenty of time to talk to me and discuss my concerns. There is a lab in house, where I had routine bloodwork. What really impressed me, is that today, Dr. Maples called me personally with the results, which came back normal. I had a great experience, I felt he was patient and attentive and I would recommend him. Oh, and his office was big, clean and modern, which was great as well. read more

Enough is enough. It's really sad to see people manipulating patients and not being upfront with their patients. These crook's are constantly taking advantage of the healthcare system. You can be extremely specific on your intentions on your visit, yet just to be re-branded with a bill you never had imagined. They know exactly how to nickle and dime you and squeeze extra money out of any visit. Go in with a request for a physical just to find out 5 weeks later you never had a physical and that was never a possibility to begin with. It is 2020, these things have to stop. PPO insurance means nothing anymore because doctors leach off of their new patients and rotten any valuable information pertaining to actual client longevity in their health. Charles Maples deserves -1 stars, and any 5 star review is propaganda and lies. PLEASE BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL and detail any experience with his staff because they will mislead you and take advantage of you and your insurance. read more
