Life happens, and I'd put off routine check-ups for far too long, but I recently decided to schedule an appointment for blood work and had a list of questions, along with a need for some advice and recommendations. Scheduling was a breeze. Their patient portal is user-friendly, and the response time was surprisingly quick. Despite my last-minute request, they managed to fit me in. In the past it would take me months to see my PCP. This was a big improvement. Everything, from lab work requests to accessing clinical notes and instructions is automated in their system, so there's no hassle. On the day of my appointment, I was pleased to find plenty of parking, even on a busy weekday afternoon, which is always a plus. The clinic looks amazing and they've clearly made major renovations. The space is bright, modern, open, and spotless, with an inviting atmosphere. The staff were professional, warm, and attentive. From the receptionists to the medical assistants, everyone made me feel welcomed. During my appointment, Dr. Kakimoto addressed all of my questions and concerns with patience and detail. Even though the visit lasted only about 30 minutes, I left feeling reassured, informed, and optimistic about my health. I also love the reminder texts and emails! So helpful especially when you have so much going on. All your clinical notes are available in their patient portal app for easy access as well as all your medical records, tests, and more. I highly recommend Dr. Amy Kakimoto and North Coast Family Medical Group to anyone looking for quality care.

I had hernia surgery performed several years ago at Coastal Surgeons. I've experienced pain at the…read moresurgical site every time I work out, and it recently got so bad one night that I went to urgent care. I later found out that the surgeon who performed my original procedure had retired. I called on a Wednesday to request an urgent appointment and was told they needed to obtain records from the urgent care doctor first--why couldn't their own surgeons evaluate the problem? I was promised a call back, but received nothing. When I called them back on Friday, I learned the representative I had spoken with was out sick and hadn't informed anyone about my situation. No urgent case handoff to other staff had occurred. From there, I had to deal with a rude and clueless staff member whose main goal seemed to be doing as little work as possible and rushing me off the phone. I eventually got an appointment with a different surgeon outside their practice the following week. When I asked if he needed the urgent care report, he replied, "Why? I'll make my own determination." Between the lingering pain and the thoughtless, incompetent staff, I have taken my care elsewhere. Caveat emptor.

I had to see her husband once when she was out of town and I found him to be just as caring. I absolutely love that the office is a converted house. It feels so warm and welcoming. They threatened me that they would kick me out of Jefferson if i wrote anymore messages. Don't I have any patient's right for my healthcare to use the portal for questions and concerns when appointments are over two to three months in the future? I rarely write negative reviews, but after repeated experiences with Dr. John Clancy, I feel…read moreobligated to share what happened, particularly because elderly patients and patients who are not fluent in English deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. My 74-year-old mother recently moved from Canada to San Diego, and we have been rebuilding her medical care here from scratch. English is not her first language, and I routinely accompany her to appointments to make sure she understands her medical care and can communicate her concerns properly. We have seen Dr. Clancy multiple times, so this review is not based on one unpleasant encounter. Unfortunately, we have repeatedly experienced the same dismissive and unwelcoming behavior. Our appointments have felt extremely rushed, often lasting only approximately 5-10 minutes. When we ask questions, we have experienced sighing, visible frustration, eye-rolling, and responses that made both my mother and me feel as though we were an inconvenience rather than patients seeking medical care. Today's appointment crossed a line for me. My mother was trying her best to explain an issue concerning her daily blood-pressure medication. During the conversation, Dr. Clancy rolled his eyes, removed his glasses, looked directly at me and, referring to my mother's English, said words to the effect of: "When she speaks English, it makes me frustrated and I don't understand." I found this extraordinarily disrespectful and humiliating. A 74-year-old woman struggling to communicate in her second language should never be made to feel embarrassed for trying to explain a medical concern to her physician. There are professional and compassionate ways to handle a language barrier. Showing visible irritation toward an elderly patient is not one of them. What makes this more concerning is that today's experience was not isolated. We have left previous appointments feeling rushed, uncomfortable and unwelcome as well. Today simply reached the point where I could no longer remain silent. We will be finding my mother another primary-care physician. I also intend to formally report our experience through the appropriate channels because I believe elderly patients, immigrants, and people with limited English proficiency should be able to seek medical care without being made to feel ashamed or burdensome. I strongly encourage families, especially those caring for an elderly parent who may need additional patience or help communicating to consider our experience when deciding whether this practice is the right fit for them. Respect and compassion should be the absolute minimum a patient receives in a doctor's office.

My OB's office recommended I go to the ER for IV fluids and an ultrasound because I was also having ongoing light spotting and abdominal cramping that wouldn't let up. Dr. Besser made us feel like we were overreacting for even being there. He said people get sick like this all the time and seemed dismissive of how sick I actually was. When I asked about the ultrasound my OB had recommended (due to the spotting and cramping), he told us it was rare to do an ultrasound in the ER and made us feel crazy for requesting one. His bedside manner was poor, I did not feel heard or taken seriously at a time when I was very sick, dehydrated, and just needed fluids, medication, and some peace of mind about the pregnancy. When I finally got a bed for fluids and was eventually given an ultrasound, nobody went over the results with me. Dr. Besser never came back to see me again.
