Dropped in here with the wife and baby after a lovely day at the Zoo with friends. It was a bit confusing when we got here. There was no host stand -- it looked like you just sat yourself, so we found a nice table down by the water. We just wanted water and to talk to a waiter or waitress about recommendations, but no one visited the table. We waited 5 minutes or so and finally decided to look in the menu, and printed at the top of one of the pages are instructions to go inside the bar to place an order. Whoops on our part.
After picking what we wanted to eat, our baby started crying. We decided I would rock the baby and she would go in to the bar with both of our credit cards to split the bill (we split everything). That's when things got ridiculous. When my wife handed the woman behind the bar, Kiley, my card and asked her to put half of the bill on it, she told my wife that her name was obviously not a man's name, and that only the person who the card belonged to could use the card. My wife said 'That's fine. Take my half of the payment with my card and I'll go get him after'. Kiley said 'No, I've already started processing his card so I need to finish it out before I take yours'. She said 'Well he is at the table comforting our crying baby. Just start the transaction over with mine, and I'll get him after so we're not constantly disturbing the baby by passing him around'. She then said 'If you don't get him to come pay for this, I'm going to cut his card up because I'll have no choice but believe this is fraud'. My wife came to the table and explained the situation to me, and I went back and raised hell with Ms. Kiley.
First and foremost, what person committing fraud decides to split the bill and pay for half of it with their own card? The polite fraudster? Give me a break. I asked this of Kiley and she said 'Well I don't know the ways people would use a stolen credit card.'. Obviously not like that, Kiley. The thing that really got to me though was the threat of cutting my card up. You're not the credit card police. I'm here visiting from another country and this credit card is the only way I can pay for things here. If I left my passport back at the hotel (which you should never do when in a foreign country, but things get forgotten when you have a new baby), I wouldn't have been able to prove that the card is mine, and I would have been unable to buy anything for the rest of the 2 week trip. She kept saying that it's their policy and she's just doing what she's told. I don't know if that's true, but if it is, it's an extremely heavy handed approach and this place should really reconsider how much damage it could do to innocent tourists versus someone buying a AUD $20 bowl of pasta with a stolen card.
That aside, the food was pretty good albeit pricey. The rest of the service staff was polite, and the views were great. I just can't in good conscious recommend this place to tourists, especially those from non English speaking countries who wouldn't be able to figure out what Kiley's problem is. read more
