Renovations are happening so it was a little noisy but the food was good as well as the company. The Hotel has set up a pop up kitchen outside with a limited menu and there was a decent range .. yes even something for the Vegan. Customers could sit inside or outside, for us the weather was a bit warm so we enjoyed the a/c. There was plenty of room in the hotel and the music was ok, not too loud. The bar staff were very pleasant and helpful. He even blushed when I complemented him on his unique, beautiful nose ring. Delicious chicken schnitzel with gravy, chips and salad. Only down side was that the salad was just lettuce leaves. The Paxton rose was delicious to have along side the dinner. The staff were friendly and helpful with where I could sit for dinner without a booking and purchases of food and drink. It is a great environment and good location. Busy little pub in the heart of Glebe. The food is awesome in this pub. It's more expensive than your average pub but the quality makes up for it. They have many events on every day of the week. Monday nights is trivia night and the place gets really packed. We tried the yummy grilled snapper with roasted potatoes. The wait was quite long tho. Make sure to get a seat before you order. This giant yellow pub is a quintessential Glebe staple. For over a century and a half, the Toxteth hotel has been a hub for locals to grab a beer, enjoy some pub food, and catch up with one another. It is a pretty big place, with a giant main bar, an outdoor verandah, and several rooms that can be rented out for events and functions. The outdoor terrace has spectacular views of the Sydney CBD, which I didn't expect at all when I first went. Most of the time, I come to the Toxteth to visit a friend who works there as a barmaid. Even though I don't get any discounts myself, drinks are still quite cheap, with glasses of wine and draught beers for around $5. This is also a popular hotel for locals to watch sports or other important TV broadcasts as there are many plasma screens hung around the premises. The food here, I've been told, isn't that fresh and it's quite expensive for what it is. So if anything, I'd recommend the Toxteth as a no-frills place to grab a cold glass of ale. read more

Unfortunately *RACISM* was on the menu the night I went - 19/01/12 I've been coming to Oz for quite some time now on extended holiday, and chose to have dinner here last week again as it's in the neighborhood. Huge mistake. We ordered two steaks and went into the bar to order two drinks. At the bar I stood in front of bartender, a young guy - early twenties, crew cut, dark brown/black hair, short - who had just finished taking another couple's money/given them drinks, and waited to be helped. He glanced up, looked at us but didn't acknowledge us, instead he deliberately ignored us and walked to the other end of the bar, casually leaning against the pokies cashier wall and began a conversation with two older men who weren't ordering drinks they were just lingering. A few minutes later, an older guy (boss?) wandered over and saw that we weren't being served (no one else was at the bar just us) and asked the woman bartender to help us which she did so happily. And as she was serving us... the young guy had by then jumped up to take orders from a couple who happened to be white. By then it was very clear to us that he simply did not want to help us because he had an issue with my ethnicity. Way to go Toxteth. You did a much needed overhaul on your venue maybe it's time to do one on your racist staff as well. It's no longer a bikie bar and the neighborhood, as someone else mentioned, is changing as more and more Glebe welcomes artists, tourist, students and Internationals. I have to wonder if they'll receive the same treatment. Anyways... shame on you. Now for those of you who are still inclined to eat/drink here, the food we had were two steaks with sauce, chips and salad for $10 each. They were okay. Nothing great nothing horrible however I will mention it was the second time we'd eaten there in a week and both times immediately afterwards my partner's stomach was extremely upset. I was fine. It's better now that they've opened it up and moved the pokies to the corner though they left the racing on the main floor so you have to deal with that crowd if you go. If you're looking for a different type of a place... a more welcoming one, I'd suggest heading over to the AB or even better the PBH or The Different Drummer. read more

The Toxteth is a great pub. It manages to find a balance somewhere between an old fashioned local (and please the TAB enthusiasts) and a buzzing hipster haunt. Maybe it's a great representation of Glebe itself in that respect. Not out to be exclusive or pretentious in any way. instead, it's a comfortable place for anyone to enjoy a beer or 3. The best thing about the Toxteth is The TATE gallery upstairs. A new exhibition every Wednesday night showcasing local artists. Sadly the food is pretty average. It's overpriced for what it is. I've only eaten at the Toxteth once, and I probably won't eat there again... The 4 stars aren't for the food. The're for the Art, the decent priced beers and the friendly atmosphere. read more

When I walked into this bar my immediate reaction was "help! I'm lost in a TAB-time-warp". At 2pm on a Sunday, the front room was pretty much solely populated by old men with eyes glued to whatever sport was playing on the numerous screens in the room. Out back in the beer garden, it's a pleasantly different experience! Reminds me of that old proverb: "never judge a bar by it's crazy old patrons and TAB facilities" I loved the laid back, friendly vibes... and these were made even more enjoyable by the obvious attention to detail and care that staff put into the Toxteth. The menu looked delicious, staff were friendly and helpful, there was a great variety of drinks (I was won-over with a teapot full of warm mead... and a few shots of Fireball), bathrooms were spotless (woo!) and, unlike much of Sydney, patrons were friendly and keen to mingle! The Toxteth seems to encourage people to sit around and chat... I love this. My only complaint was the heating. It was pretty warm out in the beer garden with the super-strength outdoor heaters blasting... (but that's a personal preference - I prefer dealing with a little cold air with a jumper to being blasted with heat). Can't wait for my next Sunday afternoon at the Toxteth read more

The outdoor beer garden is a winner. It has its own bar so you don't have to head inside to get a drink. They have massive ceiling heaters in the beer garden to keep you warm in winter, but don't stand under them for too long or you will melt! They have cider on tap and their hot chips are tasty. read more

They have $10 lunches through the week. I got some fish, which came out all fancy like with in house tartare sauce. It was absolutely divine. I couldn't however finish it so gave the chips and left over fish to one of my colleagues. They have an outdoor sitting area with some dead looking trees - the outside sitting area is kinda cool. They have fans that blow mist which reminded me of Vegas, except instead of the dry hot air we were sitting in moist Sydney hot air. I think mist fans are a bit redundant in Sydney to be honest. You're just adding more water to the already watery humidity sticky icky feeling. The joy? I guess it was watching some ladies come in for lunch and sit on the metal seats that had puddles of water from the mist built up on them. The looks on their faces were priceless and made me giggle insanely. I know I know, I'm evil. $4 for a coke was a bit pricey though. read more

My husband is very fond of pub food and by that he mostly means fish and chips. Needless to say I've been eating at a lot of pubs lately. This one leaves a bit to be desired in terms of food. They have a pie of the week but the pie is really a pot pie. I'd like a full crust. I even ventured into the dessert category and it was basically just ice cream in different shapes. That being said, if you want atmosphere to watch a game, this is the place to be. I love going here for the Lions games because everyone is engaged and excited. They sell hot cider and mulled wine during the cold nights which keeps me from freezing even in the courtyard. It's a great bar, just don't try and eat there too often. read more

Love the beer garden - great for afternoon drinks in the sun. Trendy but not painfully so. Only cider on tap is Bulmers which is disappointing for me, but the beer selection looked good. Food was decent but not amazing - had a nice but slightly flavourless lamb pie (the special of the week) with good chips and a rather sad-looking salad. Friends thought their meals were nice but not rave-worthy. Given the competition in this area, might not return for food but will definitely return for the beer garden! read more

This was the first time I went to Glebe, which is why I like visiting pubs because I end up visiting places that people would normally not visit and discovering little oddities that are off the main tourist track. This is a nice traditional English style pub whose food is not too badly priced (though I heard a couple complain that the fish was too battery). They also like their sliders, having a $4.00 slider night. That is not the only event that they have as there are also two trivia nights (a general one and a sports one) as well as a gallery upstairs conveniently called The Tate (though that was closed when I passed through). Aha, ok so you thought that the arts precinct didn't have a man's pub, well you thought wrong. This pub has one main bar but several compartments, so you've got the pool room, the pokies room, the out the back beer garden ( very nice) with large screen. The first night I came here I watched Prince William and Princess Kate get married on the big screen. There is a bistro too and the food is very scrummy - that is the chips look golden brown and the steaks succulent. The kitchen is open plan so you can see what the chef's are up to, which does give a magical effect to the venue. There is an upstairs room for functions, but this is an old building so it's not state of the art. But the deco downstairs is nice and in winter they put the heaters on in the beer garden and you can sit and enjoy the freshness. I say man's pub, as there are areas where you see the blokes get together especially the pool room and around the main bar area, the family are invited along to the bistro and of course it wouldn't be a good Aussie pub without a trivia night to boot. read more

The Toxteth is my local UFC watching venue and I'm happy to say that it doesn't attract any morons, even though the place does pack out for it. Other than that, it's a relaxed venue with some great food and friendly staff. They usually have one craft beer option on tap too. read more

Things have gone downhill since the renovations were completed, the staff are indifferent at best, and the menu has gone up in price and down in variety/quality. good on them for trying the local artist thing, but the bisons head and unfriendly staff are plain weird. i can't figure out what crowd they are trying to attract, certainly not families. will be giving it a miss for a while. read more

The Toxteth is under new management now and unfortunately after 3 tries, we have been disappointed every time. The steak was over cooked really badly, the "jus" is like a packet gravy, and no longer any option for another sauce. Every meal pretty much comes with this "jus". It's awful. The fish was okay, but no remoulade to be seen. The grazing board was fine but missing 2 elements stated on the menu. Haven't managed to get a meal that reflects what the menu says yet. It's not cheap, so would have expected much better. Sad to say, we are having a break from the old Tockey for a while, which is a shame as we were pretty devout regulars. read more

We are Glebe locals who have previously dined at Toxteth Hotel. Tonight's experience was jaw droppingly appalling. We have never seen such a poor delivery of customer service. We ordered a chicken schnitzel which comes with 2 pieces, one of which was normal, and one was not - it tasted like non-edible rubbery fish. After removing the crumbed layer, the meat had veins and did not resemble chicken. It was so rubbery that it made me gag. We questioned the meat being chicken - if it was chicken, we have serious concerns about the quality of the produce they are buying and serving. When politely explaining the situation to the wait staff, he took away the meal and then came back and said "the chef said it was chicken and there is nothing wrong with it". The wait staff came back a second time and said the chef insists it is chicken. The wait staff got a manager, who went into the kitchen, got the food out of the bin, brought it back to our table and with his fingers pulled it apart in front of us at our table, insisting it was chicken. There was no apology and no replacement meal. They had thrown our meal away without giving us an option to continue eating it or offering a replacement. The chef was insistent on his stance and made no attempt to rectify the situation, and nor did the manager. It was the most pathetic customer service experience we have ever experienced and we will not be returning to Toxteth Hotel. It's a shame as it's our local. read more
