    Risotto

The butternut pumpkin risotto was one of the few vegetarians options available, and it seemed like a good dish so I ordered one. It did turn out to be very nice, but it was quite expensive. (It was $20, and the bowl was kind of small.) I had been walking around outside for hours (story below) and this risotto really warmed me up! But looking back, I was super starving when I entered Cooper's Hotel, so any food may have satisfied me at the time. Here's the story that goes along with my experience at this place. I came here with some friends from Melbourne. We were staying in a hotel in Glebe, about 3km away. We walked from our hotel to this place after a long, tiring day, but as I followed my friends into the place, I got stopped by the bouncer, who told me "you look too young." In some other situation, I might have been pleased with this, um, compliment. But in this particular time, I had left my ID back in the hotel. So one of my friend and I walked 3km back to the hotel. I was complaining the whole way. Then we walked 3km back to Cooper's. Ugh. I was super tired and cold from all the walking. Both of us went in (finally!) and ordered the risotto. After all that trouble I agreed to a drink. (I don't normally drink alcohol. In fact this was my first time drinking beer!) Unfortunately the night wasn't over... we walked 3km back to our hotel! Okay, silly story aside, this isn't a place I would really want to come back to. I don't drink. The food is nice but I don't think it's worth as much as they charge.

I walked into Coopers Hotel in Newtown once, I was bored and in the area and decided that a quick look at the dogs wouldn't go astray. I'm not usually a betting man, but I had time to kill, the dogs were on and I was feeling neither lucky nor unlucky, but willing to lose five dollars. I got a schooner of pale ale and ventured into the TAB section of the bar. I looked at the dogs and chose who I thought would win. I ticked him off on a form and handed it into the staff. That little dog ran his heart out but just wasn't good enough on the day. 'Oh well', I had planned for this. What I hadn't planned for was the silver haired gentleman approaching me at the bar. He asked me about my race, enquired who I had bet on, whether I did it often, whether he could buy me a drink. His arm finding a resting spot on the small of my back as though it was normal. 'Don't worry about that hand, I'm just being friendly, determining contact to get you to feel at ease with me as a person, I'm harmless, I just want to chat.' It didn't work, I didn't feel at ease. I was uncomfortable. "No thanks I said, I don't bet often, my dog just lost. I have to go." And I did have to go, I wasn't lying. He asked where I was going, I remained vague and told him King Street to meet some friends. I downed the last of my beer and left the establishment. I look back at that incident now and I think, 'Good on him, having a crack'. Sure he did shorten my stay at Coopers, but I did get to experience their bathroom, their TAB, use their ATM and drink a beer and get hit on, so it was a pretty full event in my books.

I ambled into Coopers Hotel one afternoon, because they said it was happy hour... and immediately ambled (rather more quickly) out again. The place was filled with what I can only assume were bikers. The long grey beards, the leather clothes, the stone-cold stares... Now, maybe I wandered in on a day where they were hosting a biker convention (is that even a thing?), but holy hell, was it unnerving. As soon as I walked in, I was met with quite rude and lecherous stares, as I tentatively made my way to the bar... where I was subsequently ignored by the bartender because he was just oh-so-busy talking to a biker dude. I mean, really. If the staff cannot even be bothered to make someone who is clearly feeling out of place in their establishment, feel a little more comfortable, then what CAN they do? This is a basic tenet of customer service, surely. Would not repeat, and I don't care how many happy hours they advertise.

The Coopers was renovated when the pub smoking laws came out, and the upstairs was transformed into an open roofed courtyard with adjoining restaurant. The courtyard is a pleasant place for weekend drinks with sun streaming in and tables to have a meal. The smoking part is not pleasant and despite the open roof is intensely smoky on a Friday or Saturday night when everyone is out. The food at the Coopers is fantastic, consistent and the menu has something for everyone. Highlights are the grilled barramundi with avocado salad, coopers beer battered fish and chips, lamb burger with kumara chips and the half roast chicken with mash and vegies. The kumara chips are to die for, more like a few oversized wedges the size of half a kumara delicately soft on the inside and slightly crisp on the outside. The entry level front bar has a more traditional pub atmosphere, which goes off during big sports games like state of origin. Although one year they didn't have the sound turned on which upset a lot of regulars at the time. There is a pokie and smoking section at the back.

We went here for lunch and sat at the open quieter alfresco upstairs which is divided to dining and drinks-only sections. Got a good $15 deal for lunch, I had the bangers and mash, 2 pcs of big, succulent & juicy pork sausages on top of creamy potatoes mash & onion gravy. What I like about this place is its good location & attentive service. Who would've thought a classic hotel like this serves up decent lunch fares?

I was brought here for the first time last night and I must say I was impressed. We sat outside upstairs for a few drinks before we ordered some dinner. The staff were so friendly and had such a fun energy about them. Then we got served our meals...........I was having a fantastic night and the food served raised my opinion of the venue even higher. I can't wait to go back again but this time dragging some more friends with me.

Both bartenders were quick, courteous, and gave awesome recommendations. I usually drink beer but since this was more of a cocktail bar, I started with a margarita. I asked for the basic, but the bartender quickly tried to get me to try the jalapeno margarita. I was quick to decline since I'm not into jalapeno or spicy drinks. The drink was mixed and strained into a martini glass... didn't seem to be as full as it should have been, but I wasn't upset. Drink tasted great, not too strong, too sweet, or too tart. I noticed lots of people getting the freshly pressed apple drinks, so I decided to try one. When in Rome, er, Newtown.... Asked for the Sailor Jerry and apple, but once again, the bartender was quick to recommend something different. He wanted me to try JD Tennessee Fire and apple. I know it's like Fireball, which I hate, but he was very persistent with his glowing recommendation, so I obliged. I'm glad I did, because it was delicious. You could only taste a hint of the whiskey, but mixed in with the fresh apple juice - which had a nice frothy foam on top - it was like cinnamon spiced apple sauce. Yum! If you don't listen to the bartender's advice, listen to mine! Prices? Eh, it's Sydney, not cheap. It is what it is. In the end, very pleased with my visit. Kind of annoying that both times I asked for a drink, they tried to convince me to make me something else (must have been competing on a promo or something), but hey, their advice was sound and if I didn't listen, I would't have had my delicious applesauce drink!

Beware of the many smokers that use this area, on the flip side, it's smoker friendly. The drinks were well priced, and the specials were great, the bar tenders were very helpful in recommending some different drink inventions. The deco is confusing, however charming. A bare brick wall, racked ceiling with chicken wire, plumbing with light globes coming out every which way. Like an outback pub trying to keep things modern and trendy. The bar lady seemed a touch preoccupied. As if she was expecting an order of something to arrive. Such behaviour isn't indicative of bad service, it was just slightly distracting to continuously see a head pop out from behind a wall to gaze over the front entrance. I went for the $12 lunch special. One Black Angus Beef Burger with thick cut chips and ketchup on the side. The chips lived up the standard thick cut. Decent amount of crunch while fluffy inside. I believe the ketchup was made in house. Tasted like smooth tomato chutney which a touch of chilli for warmth. Nice. Everything about the burger was fresh. The beef wasn't over processed. The cheese and sauces complimented everything. The bun was soft. Simplictic and wholesome. Burgers like how mum use to make... but in a pub. For $12 it was a decent meal.
