The bistro bar area - where trivia happens
    Benjamin B.

I have a storied history with this grand ol' girl. Used to come here for beers after Year 12 with our form master Keith "Yoda" Chester. Played trivia here with my Auntie Cherie, a social socialite who can drink red wine like a pirate. And last night I hit up $1 oysters after seeing an ad on their website. The young girl manning the bistro register had been in a conversation that very definitely involved the words ..."oh my god, she's not even that hot" before serving me with a big friendly smile, and while she didn't know about the oysters and had to ask the chef, she brought 'em out all pretty-like on their bed of roquette and was kind enough not to stick around while I ate them because that would've been kinda weird. Head down, no eye contact. Its old, it's got character, and you'll always find some weirdos in here worth talking to. Come for trivia, best on the north shore.

Well, for some reason I had this strange desire to go and check this pub out, which was odd because North Sydney doesn't really have all of the interesting attractions that the other side of the harbour does. However, what is good about this place is that it is right next to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. In fact if you have just walked over it you can step in here for a nice cold beer. Actually, I probably should say craft-beer because it happens to be a craft-beer bar. They also offer tastings if you can't decide what you would like (though a paddle is $15.00). If found this to be a pretty quite place with a nice outdoor, non-smoking deck out the back. Even better, it is just across the road from the railway station, so you don't have to walk back across the bridge.

The Kirribilli Hotel sells itself as a 'true local' and for a while it was indeed my local. Of all the pubs I've been to in the area, it's the most deserving of having this title. It's an easy going pub for blue collar and white collar alike. It has an art deco style façade and lots of wood panelling on the inside. It's not fancy but not shabby either. It even smells like a pub. Beery and carpety. Working close by, long liquid lunches were occasionally interrupted by meals from the Bistro. The food is good traditional pub fair. Chicken burgers, wedges, fish and chips - it's a fair guess that the fryer is the most heavily utilised equipment in their kitchen but it's all really tasty and plated with fresh garnishes. Good on the pocket too. Quiz nights here on a Wednesday were unmissable when run by a comedian called Haskell but I think he's moved on now which is a shame. The night is popular still though, so call ahead and book a table.

There aren't a huge number of neighbourhood pubs servicing the lower North Shore area - from Cremorne down to Milsons Point, it's The Oaks, The Commodore and the Kirribilli Hotel that run the drinking monopoly. The atmosphere at KH is always good - locals stop by for lunch and there's a consistent after work crowd - but the interiors at this little hotel seem to be a bit confused. It looks as though they've modernised the carpet and furniture in recent years around the main area, yet the boxy dark timber bar is awkwardly antiquated. If you're headed here to sample some of their quality bistro fare (think the standard hotel menu featuring a couple of salads, a vego pizza, a pan-seared fish and a selection of steaks), best to snap up one of the tables in their stylish terrace section. The covered, tiled space with partially open walls is breezy in summer and toasty in winter thanks to well-placed mushroom heaters, so you can dine semi-alfresco all year 'round.

It's a Friday night and I'm heading over to Milson's Point for a drink with some friends, I seldom come out this way, but we are headed to the Kirribilli Hotel and therefor the trip is necessary. Drinking the beers on special makes for a slightly cheaper night, but the neighbourhood isn't exactly one where value is favoured. It's a classy area and the drink prices reflect this. The place is packed with people celebrating the end of another work week. Sport on the tele and the weekend on the mind. We find some seats out the back and pounce on them swiftly before they vanish. There are pool tables in the front room and a dining area to the side, but we just sit out the back, down the beers, chat and catch up on each others lives. A waitress is even doing the rounds and taking peoples drink orders from their tables, a service we keenly take advantage of. After a few more beers and a couple more conversations, we leave the Kirribilli Hotel, not for greener pastures, but for different ones.

Great staff, good beer selection and the dishes we got (chicken schnitzel and calamari) were better than most.

Being close to where I used to work, I'd frequent this place quite a bit, and before it was a PJs it was a mates fave city pub so we'd catch up over a few here from time to time. There's a pretty good mix of people in the street-level bar, and PJs have converted it into more of a sports bar so there are plenty of screens for the sports nuts to check out their favourite teams prospects. PJs typically have pretty good fare. In winter they have two absolute cracking dishes. The Guiness Pie with mushy peas, and their signature lamb shanks which is totally unctuous. Why such a modest score? Price kills the place. It's not one of the cheaper places to get a beer as someone incorrectly states in their tips, it's easily one of the most expensive places to get a beer. You're paying over the top prices for domestic tap beer. A cheap beer is $5 for a Coopers Pale Ale, which you can get on the same street about 200m up the road... Also... As much as I enjoy a good pokie section, this one ain't good. And by that I mean the clientelle. It brings in the undesireable types, and sours what is otherwise a sweet pub. The snug, the downstairs den, has a great looking bar, and "snug" seating, but it's kinda pointless down there. It doesn't feel snug, it feels stuffy and claustrophobic - and the bar has never been manned when I've been down there. Now, if they moved the pokies to the snug, and then opened up the entire bar at the street-level to include the room vacated by the pokie section, you'd have something. But why would they do that when they can get by with what they have.

Being in the city, it can get quite busy very quickly and is a decently sized basement multi-storied pub. TV screens are usually are usually playing Fox sports or something similar. I order the Parmy, just to be on the the safe side. I wasn't too game to try the Pie which is supposed to be one of the best (as judged by Irish people I work with) around. The food is carefully prepared and you can tell the produce is quality and they've cooked it properly which some pubs sometimes struggle to do consistently... The chips were the standout side, crisp and crunchy! Definitely will be trying the stew or pie, that is if I'm brave enough to.
