A lively venue, in the heart of the CBD, Albion Place is a perfect spot to catch up with mates or colleagues for after-work drinks or dinner. It's an unpretentious crowd and a relaxed, lively vibe, and funky tunes. There's a great variety of cocktails and pub fare on offer and it's all good value. It gets quite crowded on Thursday and Friday nights with the after work crowds, so try and get in early to snag a good table. I always make my way to the top level as it's usually quieter there. My picks for cocktails are the Hollywood Nights with Stolichnaya Vanilla Vodka, Chambord and Alize Bleu liqueur with muddled limes, served tall and topped with soda 15, and the Raspberry Cosmopolitan, with Stolichnaya Raspberry Vodka, Cointraeu and Fresh lime juice with a touch of cranberry juice 16. Also on offer are johnny's Caribbean (Caorunn Gin shaken with pink grapefruit juice and fresh lemon served with a twist 16), Mary's poppin (Ketel One Vodka, Cre'me de Cassis smashed up with cucumber and vanilla bean topped with cranberry juice 16), Say it with Flowers (Elderflower liqueur and Chartreuse with cranberry, muddled limes and basil 16), the Chambord daiquiri (Bacardi Rum infused with Chambord, lime juice and a touch of sweetener 16), and the Mac Daddy (Mozart Chocolate Liqueur, Grand Marnier infused with soft chilli and orange served over ice 16). To dine, my picks are the Chicken And Haloumi Skewers with salsa verde (6 skewers) 16, the Share Plate for 2 with chermoula spiced bbq lamb ribs, chicken and haloumi skewers, salt and pepper squid, babaghanoush, olives, hommus, Italian meatballs and sourdough bread 32, Salt And Pepper Squid Chilli And Shallots, Chips And Salad 17, or the Chicken Schnitzel Blt Burger with Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato, Aioli And Fries 15.

To be honest, the best thing about this pub is how close it is too the cinemas. While it isn't a bad pub it certainly isn't one of the best. Usually I end up here because I have just bought a ticket and don't really want to sit through 20 minutes of adds prior to the movie starting. It basically has everything you could expect from a pub, as well as a beer garden - no scratch that - a section of the back alley that has been partitioned off from the rest of the city where smokers can all sit with their beers (I wouldn't be taking food out here even if it was legal because I would hardly call this place a good beer garden). If the back area is full (which, from my experience, is usually not the case) they have some seats along the side alley, but honestly, how many people want to sit in a side alley drinking beers. Okay, if done well it can be pretty cool, but you can probably guess that the words 'done well' doesn't apply to this pub.

Amongst stiff competition in its particular stretch of the perennially-busy George Street, The Albion Place Hotel stands out for me, and holds a special place in my heart. I'm not sure if it's the venue itself, or the memories I've made there. Perhaps the great place allows me to create experiences that I look back on with fondness there. Unlike many similar bars, it's not always packed - there is often a spot for you to have a quiet chat with an old friend, or a free table for you and your colleges to sit down and talk shop at. With both downstairs and upstairs areas available, there's room to move and room to think. My favourite aspect of the Albion Place Hotel is the outdoor area, though. Not a traditional beer garden in any sense, it's a long and skinny alleyway next to the pub with a few little bar tables at; it feels like the outdoor seating that you see in trattorias in Rome. Unlike so many of Sydney's beer gardens, there is privacy - the alley is so skinny that it only fits one table across. If you're going to have a serious conversation (although I'm not sure how appropriate that is in a pub) or go on a first date, this is the place to do it in summer. The drinks are cheap and flow freely, the food is better than expected and the outside area rocks!

Bad food + pricey = bad combo. Wouldnt recommend. Might as well go to holybasil at shark hotel

Great peoplewatching along George street (or a nice lounge or bistro if that tickles our fancy!) and after work chillout bar.

Being close to where I used to work, I'd frequent this place quite a bit, and before it was a PJs it was a mates fave city pub so we'd catch up over a few here from time to time. There's a pretty good mix of people in the street-level bar, and PJs have converted it into more of a sports bar so there are plenty of screens for the sports nuts to check out their favourite teams prospects. PJs typically have pretty good fare. In winter they have two absolute cracking dishes. The Guiness Pie with mushy peas, and their signature lamb shanks which is totally unctuous. Why such a modest score? Price kills the place. It's not one of the cheaper places to get a beer as someone incorrectly states in their tips, it's easily one of the most expensive places to get a beer. You're paying over the top prices for domestic tap beer. A cheap beer is $5 for a Coopers Pale Ale, which you can get on the same street about 200m up the road... Also... As much as I enjoy a good pokie section, this one ain't good. And by that I mean the clientelle. It brings in the undesireable types, and sours what is otherwise a sweet pub. The snug, the downstairs den, has a great looking bar, and "snug" seating, but it's kinda pointless down there. It doesn't feel snug, it feels stuffy and claustrophobic - and the bar has never been manned when I've been down there. Now, if they moved the pokies to the snug, and then opened up the entire bar at the street-level to include the room vacated by the pokie section, you'd have something. But why would they do that when they can get by with what they have.

Being in the city, it can get quite busy very quickly and is a decently sized basement multi-storied pub. TV screens are usually are usually playing Fox sports or something similar. I order the Parmy, just to be on the the safe side. I wasn't too game to try the Pie which is supposed to be one of the best (as judged by Irish people I work with) around. The food is carefully prepared and you can tell the produce is quality and they've cooked it properly which some pubs sometimes struggle to do consistently... The chips were the standout side, crisp and crunchy! Definitely will be trying the stew or pie, that is if I'm brave enough to.
