I have to say that this is the worst phone service I have ever received. I've been on the phone for over 10 minutes to schedule an appointment and all I've been given is a phone shuffled back-and-forth between two different departments and no human is actually spoken to me other than to answer and transfer me to each other. I'm sure my surgery is lucrative but obviously they don't care enough to answer the phone. I don't have any of these problems at the University of Washington Medical Center getting hold of a human being. They offer to let you to leave a voicemail but the voice mail system won't let you leave a message and then it just hung up on me after over a 15 minutes. I'm glad because I don't think they're safe to do surgery with when they can't run their phone. read more

I would not trust this office or Dr.Kirby or his nurse. I had a extremely horrible experience here and now I am multiple months down the line and my shoulder is not better. Dr. Kirby said in my visit that I based my treatment on. When I then went back for help and to confirm what he said he at first denied it even though I had a witness in the room with me giving her recollection of what was said. It wasn't until he realized his nurse who should be reprimanded assumed that I was looking for painkillers when I was not and never asked for them. When I said after he denied saying what he say said. That I was looking for the same muscle relaxer (non addictive) that I was already prescribed before he then said he remembered saying what I heard him say. He was lying to my face trying to cover his ass about what he said durning my appointment because his nurse assumed I was looking for drugs. I feel profiled I feel wronged and lied to and I won't be able to trust doctors again. I will bring a video camera with me to record all session now. I mean if this doc is willing to lie to cover his back even at the determinant to his patients what won't he do. read more

After learning that I most likely needed a hip replacement, I was referred to Dr. Sean Toomey by two of my clients who work in the nursing field. I met with Dr. Toomey and was very impressed with him and his staff. Scheduled the surgery for August and now 6 months later I am already back to my P90X workouts with no pain. I went to OPA with crunching in my knees. I was extremely worried that surgery was in my future based on my friends and colleagues experiences with the same symptoms. I went to see Dr. Hormel. He quick through his exam, which made me nervous. This tells me the surgeon want to start cutting. I was into an X-ray quick and got the results within minutes... mixed reviews. They quickly got me scheduled for an MRI and then quick to diagnose. I was told that surgery could repair it, but wasn't recommended. Let's do a cortisone shot and rehab. The shot was quick and relatively painless. I was impressed with the overall product. Yes it was quick, but confident. Every member of the staff were incredibly friendly and very capable. This review is primarily for the scheduling desk and manager. I called after receiving a referral and then hurting me knee again later. The woman in the phone told me the doctor I was referred to would have to approve seeing me. (Why?) I waited one week and did not receive a return call. I called again but hung up after being on hold for half an hour. I called again and asked to speak to the scheduling manager. She did not answer, so I left her a message. She did not return my call. I tried calling again today, two weeks after my initial call. I had to wait on hold, and then my call was dropped. I called again, waited on hold, and talked to a scheduler with an attitude who treated me like I was stupid. She told me the physician I was referred to declined to see me but would not say why, other than to surmise that their practice is so large that the referring physician didn't know what the physician she referred me to actually did. The doctors at OPA might be great, but I am not willing to put up with this type of treatment just to make an appointment. read more

Dr. Toomey is a fantastic doctor! He replaced my knee. Within 6 weeks, he told me i was within the top 2% of fast recoveries. His staff has a group of awesome individuals. Rachel and JC call you on time. They are courteous and kind. Everyone is cheerful and you can tell they have great camaraderie. Dr. Toomey operates with robotic equipment which minimizes damage to the surrounding tissues. Dr. Toomey also replaced my hip, also with robotic technology. I was up and walking in 3 hours. Fourteen weeks ago I had an anterior hip replacement with Dr. Fred Lee. He was the perfect balance of skilled surgeon and lovely human being. From my first office visit through my post-op appointments, I felt like Dr. Lee listened to my concerns and addressed them all. My results have been amazing! I am pain-free, able to sleep and can do all of the activities I enjoy including circuit training, Pilates and a variety of workout classes. I found Dr. Mayeda to be extremely knowledgeable, an excellent communicator and passionate about doing the very best for his patients. To start off, I wonder if this is even a valid review since I was never actually seen by Dr. King at OPA Ortho. I mean, I had an appointment, drove a hour in traffic, found childcare, filled out the paperwork ahead of time, paid for parking up the street and arrived 15 minutes early as recommended for my 8:45am appointment. I then checked in, passed over my paperwork, paid my copay and found a comfy place to sit in the lobby. After 30 minutes, I checked in with the ladies at the desk who assured me the doctor would be out soon. 30 minutes later I checked in with the front desk again and they said they didn't know what the delay was but he should be out soon. It was at the 90 minute mark I decided it was time to leave. Once again the ladies at the front desk were apologetic (I told them there was no need to be- it's not their fault!) and told me I'd get my copay back. So like I said, I never actually saw the doctor but I did lose time, money, effort and reasonable expectations for care. I wish the MA or other assistant to Dr. King would have simply come out to update or check in on me. For all I know there was an emergency situation that needed to be addressed by the doctor, or maybe he just slept in. Either way, it would have been great if they would have just treated me like a human and acknowledged my presence. But in the end it worked out since I found a great ortho at Virginia Mason- where if you've been waiting 5 minutes after your scheduled time, they ask that you let them know. Virginia Mason is on time and transparent and helped me find a surgeon to give me great care. read more

I would avoid going here if you can. My wife went and seen Dr Jason Wilcox and it was one of the worst experiences with a medical professional we have ever experienced. Dr. Wilcox would not listen to anything we had to say. My wife needs hip surgery and has been in extreme pain for over 3 months. Dr. Wilcox wouldn't even go over her MRI with us and instead sent her to get a cortisone shot, my wife has no cartilage left in her hip joint, so cortisone is not going to do anything but waste time when she could be getting surgery. Not to mention we when went to the follow-up, after the shot, we asked him how the cortisone was supposed to make it better and he actually said, "Google it". WTF?! That is not something a Dr should ever say to a patient! When we went in for the initial appointment and he ordered the cortisone shot his office had told us that we needed a prior authorization from the insurance before she could get the shot. So she spent two days on the phone trying to expedite the situation only to find out that was false information, she did not need to get prior authorization. These people at this office wasted almost a month of our time all while my wife is in extreme pain. Time that could've been spend elsewhere, like at Proliance where they actually care about giving their patience the correct information and treatment. Update: We went and got a second opinion and was told that she needs a full hip replacement! She was also told that she should not walk on her leg AT ALL because it's so far gone it could break! Dr. Wilcox should've seen the same thing had he looked at the MRI Wich now I'm convinced that he didn't, I mean he wouldn't even go over the MRI with us! How this guy doesn't have a malpractice suit yet is beyond me. read more

The providers there that I have seen are solid. However, be careful when you are given braces or similar pieces of equipment. The providers sometimes don't know the cost, they quote something reasonable, and then when you get the bill later (because your insurance won't cover these), the amount is often higher. And, unfortunately they will not allow you to return these (the billing people are disconnected from the actual medical offices, so they are very nice but not at all trained to deal with this issue). Dr. Hormel fixed my chipped patella/partially torn patella ligament with surgery. I was running 6 weeks to the day afterwards. I was absolutely thrilled with my recovery, surgery and bedside manner from not only Dr. Hormel but the entire staff. I want to thank them for getting be back to 100% in time for snowboarding season. I agree that Dr Holland is probably a skilled surgeon. However, I beg to differ about his bedside manner. I have no articular cartilage in my right knee, it is bone on bone and attempts at improving mobility/pain hadn't made a significant difference. I still can't walk at all without leaning heavily on my cane & I need prescription pain meds 24/7. However, although I am very motivated to regain mobility ( I had a physical job) and although several other surgeons said I was a good candidate for TKR, Dr Holland insisted I was too young. He did not ask or give me a chance to mention how distruptive the constant pain has been. He did not examine the knee after the first few visits or observe how difficult it is for me to walk. I have been going to water aerobics 4x a week to reduce pain & build muscle, but my physical therapist told me she couldnt help me anymore until I had surgery. But still I was supposed to wait ten more years until I am 65, according to this surgeon. Seriously? I am now scheduled to have joint replacement in three weeks with another Dr. in another practice ( & hospital) as the OPA front desk staff explained I wasn't likely to be able to get an unbiased 2nd opinion there. My new Dr. isn't as skilled ( yet) since he isn't as experienced, but he takes the time to listen to my observations and to fully explain the procedure. Even though I will admit that Dr Holland probably deserves more stars, the fact is he wasn't interested in why my osteoarthritis is so severe despite my lack of risk factors besides being white/female, or in presenting alternative treatment once he rejected surgery. This was very frustrating and depressing to me. But my visits werent a total waste, the views from their offices are stunning! read more

I have had severe degenerative issues in both knee caps for 30 years, one knee reconstruction, years of cortisone, and PRP shots from my non-surgical knee specialist who thought it was time to talk to a surgeon. The first surgeon went straight to full knee replacement, didn't even talk about partial, or that my issues are specifically around knee caps. I visited Dr. Mayeda for a second opinion on whether or not I was ready for a full knee replacement and chose him because of his "interest in modern, minimally invasive surgical techniques and in complex joint revision and reconstruction". Firstly I am impressed with a surgeon who doesn't immediately go for the knife since knee replacement doesn't last forever. After hearing my issues and looking at my xrays, which he went over slowly with me, answering questions and not ignoring them, he didn't instantly offer surgery, instead he asked for an MIR for more information. After thoroughly reviewing the MIR with me, answering questions, and really discussing various options we came up with a plan that is minimally invasive and hopefully will keep the BIG surgery off for awhile. He was honest that he doesn't love the results of partial knee replacement but admitted it might be a good fit for me. He further explained that partial doesn't last as long so choosing that and then needing the full replacement just a short time later is the risk and the healing process is effected/longer (that's an abbreviated version). Since I have issues in both joint and am likely to need more than one replacement in this lifetime going over this stuff is pragmatic and really important! Dr. Mayeda is smart, honest, interested in the best long term solution, and a direct communicator. I've dealt with knee Docs for a long time and it's really nice to have one who is willing to explain the "why" "how" "when" and not be disinterested in the subject or explaining it to a patient, one who is looking out for my long term quality of life. read more

Dr. Laura Matsen-Ko performed an anterior R. Hip replacement for me 15 weeks ago. I came to her with many questions and worries due to a L. hip replacement done previously by a different surgeon. That surgery did not go well at all. The hip dislocated "without cause" 10 weeks out and continued to dislocate eventually requiring a revision to stabilize the joint. Enough about that. So even entering an orthopedic surgeon's office took some bravery on my part. What I was met with was a curious, interested, surgeon who listened carefully to my concerns and then addressed each one of them supported by data. We made a plan in which she explained what was important and also built in options for the surgery that could have been necessary. As it turned out, they were not necessary. I had no complications. I waited to write this until I felt confident. I am now. Recovery has been text book. With the guidance of a remarkable Physical Therapist as well as lots of walking the hip iss gradually strengthening. I have no pain. I'm still getting stronger but I feel well for the first time in 2 years. When I walk I have strength and balance. I'm not limiting my choices at all. I swim 4 to 5 times a week with energy. Nursing care at S. O. I. Care here was light years better than other institutions I've been in. It's important to mention too that Dr. Matsen-Ko's practice is organized, available, reliable, and kind. When I needed her she was available. She was clear, supportive and kind in each interaction we had. Did I say kind twice? I did. And she is. read more

I was fortunate to be referred to Dr. Laura Matsen-Ko when it came time for my hip replacement. And I keep coming back to her for my surgical needs. I'm a 75 year old Masters swimmer and unfortunately broke my left hip in 2017 training for competition. Back in Seattle, I saw Dr. Matsen Ko for the total hip replacement and then 1 1/2 years later for the right hip. She is so considerate of my athletics and competition in all her recommendations. So several years after the hips, I saw her for a knee replacement and she did fantastic for me. Now a year later, I'm a national medalist in my two favorite events-50 and 100 butterfly and so grateful to be able to hike and walk daily for fun and exercise. Dr. Matsen-Ko surrounds herself with a terrific team of professionals all who know how to support me in my recovery and physical therapy to get me back to the active life I love. Dr. Laura Matsen Ko was highly recommend to provide a total knee replacement. She was both compassionate and highly competent using modern techniques. To prevent infection, she stitches under the skin, glues the wound on top and covers it with a waterproof dressing. At 4 weeks, I have a pink, thin scar that will fade. Her technique also helped me achieve a 124 degree range of motion at 3 weeks and a 132 range of motion at 4 weeks. Part of my positive outcome was also do to the Swedish Joint Replacement class, Swedish personnel and a personal commitment to do all of the exercises as ordered. Good luck! read more

After years of attempting to get to the bottom of hip and shoulder pain which went on AFTER having replacements, I was sent to Dr. Carrie Wilcox by my surgeon for an injection. In the past, injections offered either no relief of very minimal short term results. Upon meeting Cr. Wilcox she was very agreeable to LISTENING to me describe my issues and what has been done in the past. Rather than simply give me the injection I was sent to receive, she did two simple tests with her portable imaging machine and promptly told me that she could help me. The images showed a collection of fluid in my hip and shoulder that was causing the pain. My surgeon had sent me to the Swedish imaging center seven months prior for a complete analysis of my shoulder which came back showing that my implant was perfect and that they could see so other issue. Dr. Wilcox saw the fluid right away as well as seeing significant bursitis in my shoulder. She removed two syringes of ugly fluid in each joint and then gave me the injection. Within one hour I had COMPLETE relief. and I don't say that lightly. My quality of life is so much greater. Without her test, the injection would have had little if any effect. I am grateful. I am so happy that I have chosen Orthopedic Physician Associates and Dr. Laura Matsen Ko do my complete knee replacement. My surgery went very smoothly only staying overnight at the Swedish Orthopedic Institute. I was back on my feet quickly only using a walker and cane for about 2 weeks. Since then my recovery could not have been better only taking 5 weeks off from work, my pain is more of a dull ache than anything else and I am getting around without walking with a limp for the first time in years. I recently made an appointment at OPA to see a provider for back pain, and I was given an appointment with Dr. Garr's PA, Glen Rogers. I'm a very curious patient - doing my own research beforehand and asking a lot of questions. I do not like to be hurried or have providers explain things in a way that is too basic/generic. After examining me, Glen explained my injury and options clearly, then he listened to every one of my questions carefully and answered them all. He spent time after my x-rays going over anatomy, physical function on the bike and how that related to my injury, and he went over my new x-rays in detail with me. I never felt hurried or unheard. He even looked up my old records from another system and showed me old injuries on my new x-rays because he saw I was curious. He used medical terminology once he saw that I was trying to learn it. Everything was done quickly, efficiently, and with attention to my level of understanding and curiosity, which tells me Glen was listening carefully. I left with a cd of my x-rays and a much better understanding of my issues and what to do about them going forward. I saw Dr. Brian Snitily, felt completely dismissed. He said it was mostly anxiety. Yes because anxiety has caused me to be out of work for 6 months due to pain. Only thing he offered was pain management as a solution and a cortisone shot which both of them I declined. The cortisone shot I've had in the past and it didn't do anything for me. Then at the end of the apt. he rushed off saying "I gotta go, I have another patient. Completely worthless. Didn't even attempt to write me a referral anywhere. read more

Website specifically states under "Spine" then "LOWER BACK PROCEDURES" that 3 doctors do artificial disc replacements. I was interested. Wholly because I am in pain every day, I feel -OLD- and I'm only 31, and damned if I'm going to have fusion done. But I get a call back from the receptionist that she asked around and "nobody here does artificial disc replacements in the lower back. It seems like it's pretty rare to find doctors that do it in the lower spine." Don't waste your time here. They can't even keep a website that gives correct information. My Dr sent a referral, with digital images, the last week of November. I called 5 or 6 times and they didn't have the images(my referring Dr had sent them TWICE digitally and overnighted a C/D on January 2nd). Today, February 1st, I finally recieved a call letting me know the Dr was declining to treat me and he agreed with my Dr's treatment plan! There was no treatment plan, hence the referral!! I'm very disappointed with this office, Dr Crutcher and the whole experience. read more

I seen Dr Brian Mayeda for severe knee pain. I had an MRI prior to seeing him and an ex-ray. He spent roughly 3 minutes with me and told me my "lower leg was dying" and "didn't know why". He was going to check with the other Drs and call me within a week. I gave me two weeks and called back. His assistant called and said he would call by the end of the week. Its been TWO MONTHS. He still hasn't called, but you all were prompt with the bill! DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY WITH THIS GUY! DOING NOTHING IS JUST AS EFFECTIVE. I know OPA has good doctors. Brian is NOT one of them and does a huge disservice to OPA Ortho! read more

I had to see Jeffrey Garr for a spine issue. The initial visits were very good. He took the time to answer my questions and I was comfortable with him doing my surgery. Then it all went haywire. He only visited me once during the five days I was in hospital. He overprescribed painkillers to the point where I had difficulty breathing and hallucinating, but despite my repeated requests, no one changed the oxycodone or reduced the dosage. He left a hole in the incision for the drainage tube, but never closed it up, so I went home with an open wound. He had promised prior to the surgery that he would arrange for a visiting nurse to check on me once a day as I live alone and couldn't see the incision. Before I went home, he refused to arrange for a nurse. So, he lied. My incision continued to leak and started to itch, despite my best attempts to keep it clean and dry. I finally went in a week after I got home from hospital and saw his assistant, who was horrified at what was actually an infection in my spine. He brought another doctor in (Garr was not there) and the doc said he needed to do surgery NOW to clean out the infection. Unfortunately, I had recently eaten, so he couldn't do the surgery, so they sent me home with a ton of antibiotics. Dr. Garr is absent after the surgery. He put my health in danger by lying about arranging a nurse which directly contributed to a nasty infection in my incision. He's a good surgeon, but terrible at aftercare. There are other spine surgeons out there who have to be better at aftercare. Go see someone else, not Dr. Garr. read more
