I was skeptical at first because of other "Asian" food I've tried in Denmark left me wanting still. When we arrived, there was a wait outside the door. In fact, every subsequent time I've come here there is a wait outside the door. That is a good sign! Reservations are recommended, but I feel this place needs a better system. You call in and if you're lucky someone will answer and put your name down. However, once you arrive you could still be waiting. They do take walk-in, you just need to be patient. Obviously based on the name, this is Hanoi style pho. It was a bowl of home for me. The soup was tasty and the beef was soft. Portions were good and I was definitely full afterwards. I did cry a little on the inside that I paid over $20 USD for a bowl of pho, but that's what you get when you travel. I also tried their shaking beef which was also yummy.

We were sat promptly and the atmosphere was nice; however, the servers didn't seem too friendly. I left a cash tip and when paying my tab via credit card, the server automatically selected 10% tip which I thought was very shady because I had already handed him a 25% tip! Very shady and luckily I caught it so I just voided the transaction and made sure to select "no tip" on the credit card machine because I had already handed him the cash tip. There were a lot of locals here, so many he was taking advantage of us because he knew we were tourists. Just be careful!

But chicken comes with steamed rice and it never showed up. We had to ask to get it and by then chicken was getting cold. Barely any lemongrass sauce for chicken and we asked for a bit more and it never showed up Food Flavorful but everything else chaotic. Check came on portable credit card machine and as waiter was preparing to have me put in my card he added a tip without asking. I could forgive everything leading up to this because restaurants have off days but this was not cool. I changed the tip to 0 and put in my card. Please do better.

That said, this is the spot to try if you want to taste the famous "LêLê" menu without going to the actual fine-dining restaurant. Unless of course you have the $. Great spot for a cool salad and Vietnamese ice coffee on a hot summer day, but flavors are not authentic enough to satisfy my vietnamese food craving. Salad was just regular greens with a simple sauce, nothing I couldn't make from my own kitchen. Vermicelli roll was OK, again nothing special, making it seem overpriced even for Copenhagen. I think a lot of it has to do with the branding - they do a good job of spreading themselves throughout the city, making themselves known to the Danes who will find the cuisine new and interesting. Good, fresh picnic food. I'm glad they don't pre-make their rolls. But overall, I wouldn't recommend LêLê, as there are other more affordable, more bang-for-your-buck options if you just do your research. Hint: Do you want real, tasty, authentic vietnamese food in Copenhagen? Go to Nha Trang in Nørrebro!!! All main plates are around 100 dkk, AMAZING Vietnamese coffee. Seriously, GO!

And this was like a "carry-out" type of restaurant with limited seating. I met the owner of LeLe who talked about her upbringing in Vietnam and the blood, sweat, and tears that went into opening and maintaining her 3 restaurants (and also cook books and I think TV appearances?) and it makes sense why the food is so good. It is truly authentic and hasn't been Westernized. I am dying to go back to Copenhagen just to come here again!

I went searching for Vietnamese soup though, because I had a cold, and Denmark refuses to sell cold medicine over the counter! So, I was trying to treat my cold with hot soup, and the "hot soup" aspect was fulfilled. Authentic? Amazing? Not really. The many of missing stars are for the service. The woman who's front of house never asked me if I wanted a drink, and when I did ask for some water, I watched her fill a glass from the back sink, and then saw a 5kr charge for that. Really? Beware, she speaks little to no English. I probably should have known better when I walked in, as the place was empty the entire time I was there.
