I was surprised my recent visit had me eating warm sushi. And it didn't blow me away like it has in the past. A little disappointed because this was my fav sushi place and would drive 10 miles to come here

Love Onsen! The food is always fresh and delicious. I was surprised to see that it was empty on a Saturday evening. They do have a lot of people coming in for takeout but at least they're pumping out orders. The staff is always polite and very accommodating. They provide great recommendations. The waitress recommended the live scallops and they were so fresh and delicious. It was nice to sit right away. The food was delicious!

The friendly service, menu recommendations, pouring my beer and refilling it at the table, purer my soy sauce...excellent. The beef carpaccio special app was delish and a recommendation. The Victoria roll....perfect and will definitely order again! Until next time Onsen!

Food was the best. The Salmon Avacado roll tastes the best. Dumplings are also really good. Waiter is extremely nice and cool.

The owner Jason is an absolute amazing chef. Everything that comes from this restaurant is top quality and delicious. Our server, Ken, knows us well and is very kind and accommodating. The fantasy roll is one of our favorites, but every roll was so amazing that we could not pick a true favorite. The spicy tuna and avocado bowl was astounding. One of the best sushi restaurants on Long Island without a doubt!! Recommended to all sushi lovers!

This place is AMAZING. My husband and I came here with our newborn on New Years Eve for an early-ish dinner! The place was buzzing with people. It was very busy and still the service was fantastic and the food was amazing. The staff was so nice and friendly. The amount of food being pumped out by the sushi chefs was incredible to watch. The sushi was delicious and so was my husbands chicken/rice entree. This will definitely be our only sushi spot from now on! Our newborn slept the two hours we were there! Mom was scared he was going to wake up screaming but our server got us the bill fast and got us out of there!

My favorite place in Oakdale. Best sushi. Best workers. Love life here. Shout out Jason best sushi chef

Okay two words, BLOWN AWAY. I have never, NEVER had a spicy tuna roll as good as I did from Onsen tonight. AND I got it to go. I'm so hyped to come back with my boyfriend and have a nice sit down dinner. It looks adorable inside, i was very hungry and didn't snap a pic, sorry. I also got a mango shrimp roll which was very tasty and the shrimp tempura! It was all so delicious. Best part, they also gave me a banana? No clue why or how it got there but hey it's a great source of potassium! I'm honestly so excited to go back and bring my boyfriend and enjoy a nice meal. Also the lunch specials seems pretty solid...

I often stop in for lunch, eat by myself, and read. It's quiet with decent music, I do not feel out of place sitting alone. The staff is lovely. The food is great. The prices are very reasonable. I highly recommend.

I picked up an order of the Any 3 Rolls Lunch Special. Their spicy tuna was unlike any I've ever had. It was so creamy and crunchy compared to other spicy tuna rolls. I did not dine in, but the interior looks nice. I would definitely come back again for lunch.

Absolutely delicious. Great service. Fresh sushi. Nice ambiance. When my husband and I walked in we were greeted kindly and the menu had a lot of great options. The iced green tea and hot tea were lovely and the salads were plentiful. The sushi was really great and I felt reasonably priced. The waitstaff was great with taking dishes that we were finished with and replenishing our waters. Overall, I would come here again for sure. Thank you for a great experience.

So, I went here tonight... by accident. I called them thinking they were another place and ordered four rolls that sounded fantastic along with the chicken tempura app. I can say to start, the tempura was good, very straight forward and as I moved through each roll, they were good one by one... then I had the 2013 roll which was duck, cucumber and wild black rice; this was not good, it tasted off, like an oceany old taste, then I started tasting things in each roll that were sort of unappealing... All in all the rolls were creative but something just felt off and with sushi, that's the last thing you want to feel let alone taste. $80 feeds two people well and if it's three people they will maybe crave a touch more. My mouth has a lingering distaste and I'm rushing to brush my teeth, we both are... I'm gonna stick to my regular spot for a while for sure.

For the price you are paying, you are getting a good deal on most of the sushi, and chef omakase or tasting menu. On our recent trip, I ordered the $50 omakase, while my my brother and sister in law ordered the $75 chef special. How they differed, we were not sure. Later we found out that we were both to get a variety of dishes all of which were rather outstanding. Unfortunately, my $50 entree came with a rather boring close of 3 salmon, 3 tuna, and 3 scallop sashimi's. However my brother and sister in law received a true omakase tasting featuring approximately 10 sushi all of the better higher-end cuts, along with a special roll. The overall ambiance of the place is done up nicely as the price point suggests. Not entirely overboard, but just the right touches. The service here is also quite attentive with hosts and waiters being very welcoming. Just be mindful that they do get busy as most places during peak and weekend hours. I've learned my lesson and will not cheap out here and will order the $75 omakase. If you're not as hungry, they $50 will do, just know that you will be getting more sashimi than sushi, and the cuts will be your basic run of the mill. The $75 omakase is where things shine from start to finish.

I'd seen the reviews about gruff servers on here before but shrugged it off as many times people exaggerate and the proximity to mom's home made it a convenient spot to go, plus my kids love hibachi so why not give it a shot. Called a week ahead and made a 4pm reservation, no issues there. Unfortunately the weather wasn't cooperating and we got stuck in traffic during the downpour, causing us to arrive at about 4:15. The front desk was empty and we waited about 5 minutes before anyone came to check us in, then another 5 or so before we were told our table was ready - not a big deal on our end, but the hostess felt compelled to shame me in front of everyone. With my family standing around and other guests in earshot as we're told the table is ready I get "Next time you need to be on time, we held seats for you!". At this point I seriously considered just walking out, especially when I saw the number of empty tables there were in the hibachi area when we were seated but decided to roll with it for the family's sake. To make matters worse we weren't even seated, just trying to corral a 2 year old into his booster seat and the waitress is wanting drink orders, not even asking if we're ready just what do you want to drink. This was far from a pleasant way to begin the meal. Thankfully once this debacle was over and done with the rest was smooth sailing. To be fair our chef was fantastic with the kids, very engaging and threw them some little toys while he worked to keep them going. And the food turned out to be quite good as well so it wasn't a complete failure thankfully. All in all a good meal but points off for the horrid customer service up front. Things happen, people run late sometimes especially in bad weather - no need for the public shaming especially when half the dining room is empty. Probably more like 3.5 stars in light of that but I'll round up here since the family wound up enjoying in the end.

Soft, spicy tuna provided a nice counterbalance to the fried seaweed. Oyster Bay roll featured a thin slice of jalapeño on top of each piece with a dollop of spicy Mayo. Let's start with the good. We went on a full Saturday night. Our waitress and waiter, despite their…read moreeerily "The Menu-esque" mannerisms, were very friendly. The waiter very enthusiastically brought me a perfectly chilled beer and a perfectly chilled glass. I dug that. The Tokyo White beer was delicious. One of the best beers I've had. Our waitress did - on at least two occasions - tell us the chef recommends that we eat the dish faster and immediately after it is placed in front of us. To her credit, she said it in the nicest possible way and we obliged. Now let's talk about the food. The first course was an oyster. Tasted like eel sauce and wasabi- but a good balance. The second course was some sort of Tataki. It was also pretty good. Tasted like eel sauce and wasabi- but a good balance. The third course was some sort of seaweed salad. It was pretty good. Tasted like eel sauce and wasabi (you might be starting to recognize a pattern). The fourth course I don't fully remember the name of. It did NOT taste like eel sauce and wasabi. It was a warm dish, temperature wise. It kind of tasted like a thick seafood/corn chowder, but it wasn't a soup and it has a shredded consistency. It was alright. The next course was what they described as some sort of chef specialty soup that had to "cook for hours and hours".. It was miso soup. It was good miso soup. As good as any $4 miso soup I've had at any good, local, non-Omakase sushi restaurant. Was it better? No. And it was served in a plastic cup. It really should've been served in some sort of a stone or ceramic cup/bowl. I don't even eat out of plastic in my own home when I'm throwing together a quick $10 meal. There may have been one more starter course- but if there was, it certainly wasn't memorable. Now we're onto the "main course" dishes. This might be the fault of my own ignorance, that I expected the dishes to be very unique and make us "oooh and ahhh". But the next five courses are just single pieces of sushi roll. The staff and the chef would show us pictures of the fish and the chef would hold up the actual fish they were using- as well as showing us the JFK shipping label to confirm that it had been flown in recently. I believe you! But these next five dishes are where the immeasurable disappointment really kicks in. Each single roll was from a different type of fish- and I'm sure it was some of the highest quality, freshest fish they could source. Unfortunately, every single piece tasted exactly the same. This is not hyperbole or an exaggeration- all five of the next courses tasted exactly the same- like an average sushi place roll but with eel sauce SATURATED rice and a big glob of wasabi. That was the only flavor profile- eel sauce and wasabi. Some of them were seared with a torch. The ones that were seared with the torch had a slightly different flavor profile- the torched ones tasted like eel sauce, wasabi and butane from the torch! Again, this is not hyperbole or exaggeration- the main course sushi rolls from this high-end Japanese restaurant all tasted exactly the same. If I had bought those rolls at a regular sushi restaurant for $20 per six pieces I would've been disappointed. It's just not good. It's boring. All you can taste is soy sauce, eel sauce, wasabi, and butane.. I truly felt like they were playing a joke on us- seeing how pretentious they could act while serving us beyond overpriced and mediocre food and watch us all eat it up both figuratively and literally. Every single $15 roll I've had from Sushi Ichi or Mt Sinai Sushi (two other local Japanese restaurants) is preferable to what they're serving at Sora Omakase. We had the option of adding on a single piece Wagyu beef roll for $30. Thankfully, I didn't fall for it. I'm sure it would've tasted like eel sauce, wasabi, and butane. Now let's move on to the last course. They called it a "dessert" - but it's another salty fish dish of some sort. I don't fully remember what it was, but I do remember that there was a little piece of plastic on top of it. So I have to awkwardly ask the chef if this piece of, what I clearly know is plastic garbage that shouldn't have made its way to my plate, is edible.. the chef feigns a language barrier and pretends like he doesn't know what I'm saying. He tells me that it's seed garnish. I say "no not the garnish- I'm asking what this little piece of plastic is" and pointed it out to him. He says " oh that's paper" and he plucks it off my dish before I had a chance to take a picture of it. I didn't expect them to give me money back or even remake it- but they barely acknowledged it and didn't even apologize for the mistake. I couldn't help but I think about the waitress, reminding me that the chef recommends eating each dish immediately for the best culinary experience. Well, I have a suggestion for the chef- for the best possible culinary experience - I recommend you make sure you don't serve a customer plastic garbage.
