The food quality is not as I expected it to be. I had the bento box with steak and shrimp, both were delicious but the teriyaki sauce was conjealed and too thick and heavy for my liking as well as too sweet. Service was friendly and just OK as they didn't really check up on us and we had to wait for our waters to be refilled. read more

I'm not sure if it's a myth I made up in my head or based on facts that were reported somewhere, but I always tell people this is ranked as one of the top 3 sushi spots on Long Island and after I bring people there they tend to agree/believe me, so there's something that! I'm a tuna fan so naturally I get anything tuna related -- the volcano and voctorian rolls were hands down my favorite part of the meal and will be what I order every time moving forward. The ambiance of the place is small and quaint which gives an authentic and cozy feel. It's almost like walking into a sushi speakeasy (much nicer than what the exterior of the building complex might suggest). The chefs always send over a free shareable plate for groups which is kind, and service is always quick. To top things off, the red bean tempura ice cream is my go to and a special treat every time I come -- don't knock it til you try it! So yummy. I've been coming here for years having grown up right across the street from it, and it is a staple answer of "where should we eat?" On a regular basis. Definitely worth checking out! read more

I was surprised my recent visit had me eating warm sushi. And it didn't blow me away like it has in the past. A little disappointed because this was my fav sushi place and would drive 10 miles to come here read more

Onsen - Eel avocado roll with a shrimp tempura roll - Japanese Near Me - Oakdale, New York

Love Onsen! The food is always fresh and delicious. I was surprised to see that it was empty on a Saturday evening. They do have a lot of people coming in for takeout but at least they're pumping out orders. The staff is always polite and very accommodating. They provide great recommendations. The waitress recommended the live scallops and they were so fresh and delicious. It was nice to sit right away. The food was delicious! read more

Always the best sushi around. Very friendly staff and food gets out fairly quickly. Never had anything remotely less than exceptional. We be always loved the ambiance. There is purple neon lighting around the ceiling, so our sonar 4 named it the purple restaurant. He's 17 now and we still call I that. read more

The friendly service, menu recommendations, pouring my beer and refilling it at the table, purer my soy sauce...excellent. The beef carpaccio special app was delish and a recommendation. The Victoria roll....perfect and will definitely order again! Until next time Onsen! read more

Cant believe how my favorite sushi restaurant has consitantly gone down hill. The service is terrible, the sushi itself falls apart. Some of my salmon was actually warm. The fish quailty is also not the same as it was years ago. Unfortunatly i will never return they must be under new ownership. Such a shame. read more

Food was the best. The Salmon Avacado roll tastes the best. Dumplings are also really good. Waiter is extremely nice and cool. read more

The owner Jason is an absolute amazing chef. Everything that comes from this restaurant is top quality and delicious. Our server, Ken, knows us well and is very kind and accommodating. The fantasy roll is one of our favorites, but every roll was so amazing that we could not pick a true favorite. The spicy tuna and avocado bowl was astounding. One of the best sushi restaurants on Long Island without a doubt!! Recommended to all sushi lovers! read more

I also was surprised as the sushi was not as good. Had to spit one piece out as was bad which ruined the dinner. They said I should not order that type of fish next time. Not sure if there will be a next time. Nothing worse than old sushi. The service was great but don't sell bad fish. read more

Another year, another year of delicious food. Who can say no to Onsen , always a tasty , fresh and delicious meal. Thank you , Onsen.

This place is AMAZING. My husband and I came here with our newborn on New Years Eve for an early-ish dinner! The place was buzzing with people. It was very busy and still the service was fantastic and the food was amazing. The staff was so nice and friendly. The amount of food being pumped out by the sushi chefs was incredible to watch. The sushi was delicious and so was my husbands chicken/rice entree. This will definitely be our only sushi spot from now on! Our newborn slept the two hours we were there! Mom was scared he was going to wake up screaming but our server got us the bill fast and got us out of there! read more

Okay two words, BLOWN AWAY. I have never, NEVER had a spicy tuna roll as good as I did from Onsen tonight. AND I got it to go. I'm so hyped to come back with my boyfriend and have a nice sit down dinner. It looks adorable inside, i was very hungry and didn't snap a pic, sorry. I also got a mango shrimp roll which was very tasty and the shrimp tempura! It was all so delicious. Best part, they also gave me a banana? No clue why or how it got there but hey it's a great source of potassium! I'm honestly so excited to go back and bring my boyfriend and enjoy a nice meal. Also the lunch specials seems pretty solid... read more

I picked up an order of the Any 3 Rolls Lunch Special. Their spicy tuna was unlike any I've ever had. It was so creamy and crunchy compared to other spicy tuna rolls. I did not dine in, but the interior looks nice. I would definitely come back again for lunch. read more

Onsen - 2 spicy tuna rolls, 1 shrimp tempura roll - Japanese Near Me - Oakdale, New York

So, I went here tonight... by accident. I called them thinking they were another place and ordered four rolls that sounded fantastic along with the chicken tempura app. I can say to start, the tempura was good, very straight forward and as I moved through each roll, they were good one by one... then I had the 2013 roll which was duck, cucumber and wild black rice; this was not good, it tasted off, like an oceany old taste, then I started tasting things in each roll that were sort of unappealing... All in all the rolls were creative but something just felt off and with sushi, that's the last thing you want to feel let alone taste. $80 feeds two people well and if it's three people they will maybe crave a touch more. My mouth has a lingering distaste and I'm rushing to brush my teeth, we both are... I'm gonna stick to my regular spot for a while for sure. read more

Absolutely delicious. Great service. Fresh sushi. Nice ambiance. When my husband and I walked in we were greeted kindly and the menu had a lot of great options. The iced green tea and hot tea were lovely and the salads were plentiful. The sushi was really great and I felt reasonably priced. The waitstaff was great with taking dishes that we were finished with and replenishing our waters. Overall, I would come here again for sure. Thank you for a great experience. read more

Having just rolled out of a one massage, this place facilitated my hankering for sushi & then some. From an extensive specials menu, appetizer menu and regular menu, every palate was facilitated. Attentive service (think we had 3 servers at our table), witnessing a sushi chef who addressed each and every customer by first name (personalized service) and fair priced items and ample drink menu. Not from the area but if I were to circle back this way, I'd definitely make a pit stop here for quality and quantity. Being someone who usually visits Tai Sho when in this neck of the woods... a nice surprise indeed and a hidden gem in Oakdale. read more

Fantastic sushi that is fresh, elevated and hits the spot. We did take out on Mother's Day along with a lot of other families apparently. Even though the wait was a bit longer than usual the food was top notch. The Philadelphia roll was the best we've had anywhere-with the addition of the scallions and toasted sesame seeds it was perfection. The Boston roll was nice and light as was the shrimp mango roll. The hubby loved his sashimi. Can't wait til next time. read more

Wow! The fish is so fresh here, especially the red snapper. So Incredible. Many veggie options as well and so many roll types that I have never seen before. We have been regulars for years. Loved the sushi. Amazing quality for a small local place. About 6 weeks ago the staff changed as did the quality of the sushi. We tried three times hoping it was true. After today when we threw out half our order we have officially written Onsen off. The sushi is often warm soft and not fresh tasting. The quality of the sushi is no longer high. So sad to lose this place as we ate their sushi 3 out of 4 fridays per month. Now to find a replacement. read more

A decent hole in the wall place. Upon the meeting the staff and the sushi chef (owner I believe) are very friendly! Place was pretty empty when walking in at dinner hours...Appetizers (specifically the rock shrimp) had no flavor - seemed more like steamed fish from Costco with some sort of orange mayo mixture. Presentation of the sushi roll was very nice. The waitress kept telling us to get the oysters...once...twice...three times...I guess they wanted to unload the stored food to someone. Sushi seemed fresh but few hours later gave a terrible stomach issues . Keep the alka seltzer handy! read more

I've eaten sushi restaurant all over the country and consider myself a foodie and eat out probably more often than I should so I'm a good evaluator of a decent restaurant. Onsen without a doubt is the worst sushi restaurant I have ever been to. This is the first time I have ever had left half of food on the plate. All of their specialty rolls are made with chopped up mixed up mush of tasteless fish. That is if it was actually fish. My review of this place is don't go there if you don't want GARBAGE!!!. Not only the worst Sushi restaurant I've been to but maybe the restaurant I've eaten at in a long time. read more

Great find! I had the omikaze plate and a bluefin tuna appetizer. Tuna fish was seared and well seasoned. Loved the sauce and bed of cabbage was refreshing. The omikaze plate was delicious! Lots of sashimi and sushi. Very fresh fish and a great selection. I also appreciate that the plate focused mostly on fish and didn't mix in octopus or squid. There was a great small dish of orange clam, and the plate came with a nice roll too. I say at the bar and the sushi chefs were very friendly. Nice atmosphere. read more
