I'm not sure if it's a myth I made up in my head or based on facts that were reported somewhere, but I always tell people this is ranked as one of the top 3 sushi spots on Long Island and after I bring people there they tend to agree/believe me, so there's something that! I'm a tuna fan so naturally I get anything tuna related -- the volcano and voctorian rolls were hands down my favorite part of the meal and will be what I order every time moving forward. The ambiance of the place is small and quaint which gives an authentic and cozy feel. It's almost like walking into a sushi speakeasy (much nicer than what the exterior of the building complex might suggest). The chefs always send over a free shareable plate for groups which is kind, and service is always quick. To top things off, the red bean tempura ice cream is my go to and a special treat every time I come -- don't knock it til you try it! So yummy. I've been coming here for years having grown up right across the street from it, and it is a staple answer of "where should we eat?" On a regular basis. Definitely worth checking out! read more

This place is AMAZING. My husband and I came here with our newborn on New Years Eve for an early-ish dinner! The place was buzzing with people. It was very busy and still the service was fantastic and the food was amazing. The staff was so nice and friendly. The amount of food being pumped out by the sushi chefs was incredible to watch. The sushi was delicious and so was my husbands chicken/rice entree. This will definitely be our only sushi spot from now on! Our newborn slept the two hours we were there! Okay two words, BLOWN AWAY. I have never, NEVER had a spicy tuna roll as good as I did from Onsen tonight. AND I got it to go. I'm so hyped to come back with my boyfriend and have a nice sit down dinner. It looks adorable inside, i was very hungry and didn't snap a pic, sorry. Absolutely delicious. Great service. Fresh sushi. Nice ambiance. When my husband and I walked in we were greeted kindly and the menu had a lot of great options. The iced green tea and hot tea were lovely and the salads were plentiful. The sushi was really great and I felt reasonably priced. I called them thinking they were another place and ordered four rolls that sounded fantastic along with the chicken tempura app. I can say to start, the tempura was good, very straight forward and as I moved through each roll, they were good one by one... then I had the 2013 roll which was duck, cucumber and wild black rice; this was not good, it tasted off, like an oceany old taste, then I started tasting things in each roll that were sort of unappealing... All in all the rolls were creative but something just felt off and with sushi, that's the last thing you want to feel let alone taste. $80 feeds two people well and if it's three people they will maybe crave a touch more. My mouth has a lingering distaste and I'm rushing to brush my teeth, we both are... I'm gonna stick to my regular spot for a while for sure. read more

We have been regulars for years. Loved the sushi. Amazing quality for a small local place. About 6 weeks ago the staff changed as did the quality of the sushi. We tried three times hoping it was true. After today when we threw out half our order we have officially written Onsen off. The sushi is often warm soft and not fresh tasting. The quality of the sushi is no longer high. So sad to lose this place as we ate their sushi 3 out of 4 fridays per month. Now to find a replacement. read more

Onsen without a doubt is the worst sushi restaurant I have ever been to. This is the first time I have ever had left half of food on the plate. All of their specialty rolls are made with chopped up mixed up mush of tasteless fish. That is if it was actually fish. My review of this place is don't go there if you don't want GARBAGE!!!. Place was pretty empty when walking in at dinner hours...Appetizers (specifically the rock shrimp) had no flavor - seemed more like steamed fish from Costco with some sort of orange mayo mixture. Presentation of the sushi roll was very nice. The waitress kept telling us to get the oysters...once...twice...three times...I guess they wanted to unload the stored food to someone. Great find! I had the omikaze plate and a bluefin tuna appetizer. Tuna fish was seared and well seasoned. Loved the sauce and bed of cabbage was refreshing. The omikaze plate was delicious! Lots of sashimi and sushi. Very fresh fish and a great selection. I also appreciate that the plate focused mostly on fish and didn't mix in octopus or squid. Ive been told by a few people to check this place out. I finally came here for a quick dinner. It was pretty busy around 6 on a Thursday. Great menu.. Tons of drinks to choose from, speciality rolls and dessert. Everyone who worked here was helpful and friendly. They had very hot towels when you first get there which is always a nice touch.
