Upon arrival, we pulled in front of the office and decided to turn around knowing we would be going in the other direction towards the lake. As we were turning around, another car was pulling in but stopped to let us turn around. We were immediately met by the irate campground owner screaming at us telling us it was a one way and we couldn't go that way. So we tried to back up and he screamed at us to stay off the grass. My husband asked where do you want me to go and the owner just threw his hands in the air and went to the other car. I got out of the car to get our reservation as my husband was too upset. Side note, there are no signs marking the road as a one way. I told the owner my son would be camping with us and would be arriving later. He said he would have to park in the parking lot which is quite a walk from our site. The campsite allows two tents per site but apparently only one car although there was plenty of room for him to park there. My son arrived late as he had been attending the NYS Fair that night. He went to the parking lot as instructed and was met with a flashlight in his face and was questioned by police. He then had to carry all of his camping gear from the parking lot to the campsite. My sister and brother in law also had a run in with the police patrolling the campground. While we were camping in tents on the lakefront, they brought their camper and were in the RV side of the campground. They drove down to our site for dinner and a campfire. They left to return to their camper around 10pm. They were met at their site with flashlights in the face. Two cops questioned them separately asking if they were lost and said that they were observed driving in circles. My sister and brother in law explained that they were yelled at earlier by the owner for driving the wrong way so they were just making their way back. The police response was that they don't like strangers here. We have had a couple issues with the owners of this campground in previous years. One year they yelled at us for putting a tent on the border between two sites even though we purchased both sites. Another year they sold us green wood that would not burn and last year, our site was infested with bees. We keep returning because we love attending the NYS Fair and staying at the lakeside campground is a beautiful and inexpensive way to make a weekend out of it but between the irate owners and the police harassment, it no longer seems worth it.

Sometimes in the summer months there is blue-green algae which causes the swimming area to be closed. Website normally will indicate this so check ahead if you are set on going swimming. This summer they had an inflatable slide so there was something for the kiddos to do besides swimming. All in all a nice park if you are in the area. My pops, who is now retired, purchased a recreational vehicle and has embraced camping as his new favorite past time. He has asked me several times to join him on an excursion and though I'm not very outdoorsy I finally relented. We pulled into Verona State Park on a Friday afternoon and even though it was early September and nearing the end of the season, the campground was still fairly crowded. The snack bar and store closed after Labor Day but I spent most of my time at the nearby Turning Stone Casino and didn't mind missing out on a few amenities. The park was immaculate, with clean shower rooms and nary a piece of litter in sight. The employees at Verona Beach obviously took their job very seriously and some were a tad overzealous. The workers frequently drove through the campgrounds, patrolling the area and enforcing their rules. I took a walk alongside Oneida Lake after dark and apparently violated one of the sacred rules, receiving a stern warning from the park ranger. I understand why camps only allow power generators during certain hours; gennies can often be noisy and we should preserve the sanctity of nature. On Saturday night we were caught in the middle of a thunderstorm and it rained for hours. I expected the rangers to be a little more lax on generator hours during the storm, when most campers are stuck inside and need electric to power their televisions and stave off boredom. The television in our RV only picked up local channels so we watched an old episode of Wonder Woman featuring special guest star Leif Garrett. Even during a downpour the rangers at Verona State ruled with an iron first, banging on the door of the RV like an angry police officer all because our generator was left on for a few extra minutes.

Carol Goris, called my wife's sister to tell her she needs to get her camper off the campgrounds because they have someone who is moving into her spot when the new season begins. They gave her less than 2 weeks to remove it. Come to find out the person that wanted the location she had for the last 40 Years, was the campground owner's daughter. Fast forward to making it worse. Having spent so many years there we planned a celebration of life for her Seasonal campground friends, local family and friends, and other friends and family from other states. The event was planned in February for August 6th. Two weeks prior to the event, two weeks to the day, The owner, Carol Goris (and he husband Al) told us they were cancelling us from having the event there. We asked for reasons and received none, we explained we have family flying in etc.. they still wouldn't explain and just shut us out. Needless to say, family is sad enough having to have a celebration of life, now they have the undo stress over trying to find a location in sylvan beach during the prime season in less than two weeks. Residents of the campground all will tell you how irrational the owners have become. More arguments among residents and owners, people being kicked out of the campground after disagreements with the owners. Raising their prices. Not worth it. I do not recommend.

It's not too far off from Heritage Hill Brewery, so you can do a two-for and visit both-- however the park is lovely and worth a visit on its own. There's an overlook near the entrance where you can get a glimpse of the waterfall. However, the falls are also within walking distance of the start of the trail. The hill is on a slant and there are steep stairs, so the view may not be accessible for those who have difficulty walking. However, it was so calming just to sit and watch and listening to the waterfall. The day I went, there were others out but the paths didn't feel claustrophobic. I took some time and walked through the woods. The trail I took was relatively short, I think about a half mile total. I appreciated that there was a marker at the start that let you know how long it was. I am by no means a regular hiker (hoping to change that one day!) but this trail wasn't exhausting and was quite serene.
