    Eggplant kasundi

A Rainy Saturday morning does not make for a fun day at all . After braving the redonculis traffic , I got sick of it all and pulled in to the nearest parking space thankfully right outside . A quick swiz of the menu with coffees promptly ordered , I went for the Eggplant kasundi with eggs and watercress . Delicious is my verdict ! Rich tomato spiced sauce with diced eggplant and a poached egg , add a ample sized portion and you have yourself a brunch . Not quite breakfast not quite lunch .

    Just like uni days...

What can I say. "American Style" diners are a thing here, which amuses me (see my review for Federal), however these guys are doing it right! While I have a small space in my heart for cheesy greasy American diners at home, I can appreciate "nice" diners from time to time (if you ever go to Seattle you'll see what I mean when you visit 13 Coins). Anyway, Onehunga Cafe is not only one of those "nice" diners, but it isn't over pretentious like Federal. Where business men and uni students can coexist, they have the morning-noon-night thing going! I am taking a course out in Penrose, and this has slowly become my pre-class ritual. They brew supreme all day long, and for $3.50 you can get a bottomless cup. I usually pair this with something from the cabinet. So far I've had the sausage roll, chocolate cookie (which had the consistency of a brownie yum!), and the mussel fritter which is a small plate on the menu. The mussel fritter was good it was just a but it was a bit too creamy and rich for me. By the end of it I felt a little sick. The flavour were so good though I powered through it. I have to say, the bottomless coffee thing is SO good. I sit there for 1-2 hours and my coffee is never empty. Last time I was in they brewed a fresh pot just for me! I'll write another review when I eat a meal here, but please do me a favour and go get a bottomless mug and a snack because it is fantastic!

Worth the trip just for the coffee.

New cafe in Onehunga which has taken over the old Video Ezy shop on the corner of Arthur St and Onehunga Mall. We wandered down to check it out and were met at the door by a friendly staff member who showed us our seats and advised what was unavailable on the menu (chai). All we wanted was coffee but we checked the menu for vegan friendliness and although it came up short, there was a vegetarian mushroom dish which may have been able to be veganised. As it was, my husband can't go past a bowl of fries, so we ordered the hand-cut fries with our coffee. The coffees (1 x soy macchiato, 1 x soy latte) were very good. Really creamy and tasty. So good we had two. Very good. The fries were also very good, and came with what appeared to be a home-made tomato sauce, which was okay but didn't have the strong taste we like, so we added some HP sauce as well. Service was great, friendly and helpful and I would have given 5 stars except the fries were slow and we had to inquire as to their whereabouts. I am possibly being unfair as this was the last Sunday before Christmas and they were VERY busy. We will definitely go back.

This is a new addition to Onehunga and located really close to Dress Smart. I think today was the first day it opened so there seemed to be a few teething problems but nothing major, just a bit of a wait on coffees and selling out of stuff quicker than they thought - which is a good sign!! The layout is really cool, very open and with little clutter. We were greeted at the entrance and asked where we would like to sit. We decided to eat outside where there are lots of tables that you can share with other people if it's busy. The lady explained what food was not available which is always helpful. We ordered the fish and chips to share, a house shake (chocolate) and a Peroni beer. The meal came with two pieces of fish. The batter was light and crispy although I would have preferred a fraction less oil. The chips were good, nicely flavoured. It also had a salad of mesclun salad leaves and sliced radish. There was no dressing so I didn't enjoy it. This is just personal taste as I find it really hard to eat salad without dressing. The house shake was REALLY GOOD. The only thing I found strange was that it was not really cold. It was really hot today so would have been better if it was colder. Overall this is a great addition to Onehunga. I'm looking forward to trying a few more things from the menu, or a drink in the evening! It will also be interesting to see what the dinner menu is like. The staff are really attentive and friendly. Definitely give it a try

It is like having lunch at your cool aunt's place. Homestyle fabulous! Compared to the other options nearby, this sunny little glass front cafe is a little piece of heaven. The ladies who own it are super friendly, and say hello by name whenever I stop by. They do fabulous catering, and their morning tea is to die for (warm just baked cheese scones.... savory tarts with cumin and kumera... excuse me, I'm drooling...) At lunch time they always have an assortment of interesting and healthy salads -- tons of vegetarian options, and you can mix and match as many as you want in a container. One of my favorite options of late is the spicy eggplant. It's half an eggplant that's been roasted, scooped out, mixed up with spices and whatnot, and put back in the skin. I LOVE eggplant, and this is as good as it gets!!! I always find it hard to resist their beautiful cakes. I tend to buy a slice with the idea of bringing it home to share with my husband for dinner, but sometime around my afternoon tea I end up starting to sample it. I've had the carrot cake, which was delicious, and another lemon cake thingy which was also to die for. Check out their Facebook page where they advertise their salads and other goodies for the day! Worth a trip out if you're trekking around Mangere domain, or on your way back from an airport pickup!

If you drive past, you wouldn't think twice about it - there's no prominent sign and it's not accompanied by a line of shops either. It was hard to narrow down to ordering one thing on the menu - everything seemed so appealing from baked ricotta to three cheese macaroni. It isn't your typical eggs benny type brunch menu. We ordered three items on the menu with a promise to share (secretly as a backup plan if it didn't hit the spot). Luckily my fish cakes was my favourite. The fish cakes were so full of flavour and spices, and went well along with the different textures of sauteed silverbeet and fried potato - which was not chunky potato as expected but literally pieces of potato chips. Yum! The salmon was too salty on its own and should have been eaten with the rice and pickled vegetables. A simple and clean dish that could be good if you didn't want anything heavy for brunch. The skirt steak with tortillas were ahh-mazing and I like that you make your own tortillas so you can stuff as much or as little. I wish it came with more wraps though! I'm so happy I found this gem of a cafe in Ellerslie. I was expecting good food but it was even better than what I had hoped for. Unlike other trendy cafes which are experimental with their flavour combinations, you'll understand everything on the menu. Extra points for having Little Island ice cream to finish with. In love with the coconut flavour!

Had a bit of trouble finding it beause it's slightly tucked away, but once we did, we found ourselves at a very cute little cafe. Love the interior, a very nice space! The smashed avo here comes with lime, coconut and macadamia nuts on grainy bread and is truly a taste sensation, especially for an avocado enthusiast like myself. Great coffee too!

Yes it sounds strange, but imagine an old two story house turned into a cafe. The first floor is the cafe as seen from the street plus a second room. The upstairs is a room with a big table that could be used for book club meeting and a kids play room. Since I went there on a Thursday around 11 the kids had a loud rowdy command over the second floor. The food: great choices of both pastries and salads. I had the chickens club sandwich with chips, while the bf had a breakfast egg dish. But let me backtrack to my chips - absolutely delicious, like unexpectedly that a cafe would have some of the best chips I've had. The other food was great as well. Luscious cafe left a very nice cozy feeling with me. I would definitely go back.

It is a narrow…read morecafe....but possesses some length; hence backroom seating as well as an upstairs area affords Luscious Cafe quite a "spacious" feel. And within 10 minutes of my arrival, the space & staff were sorely tested as a late lunch rush developed. I ordered the Luscious Mince on Toast with a bottled juice & a large mocha (of course) for later. My mince on toast duly arrived with a poached egg perched precariously atop. The egg looked a tad forlorn & was slightly over cooked; the mince however was tasty & plentiful. Delish. I ordered a peach & passionfruit slice to go with my mocha - both were divine. Although not exactly Luscious- I would give this cafe 3/5 for quality of food, but 5/5 for the lovely staff who held themselves with aplomb during the afternoon rush which I'm sure must happen every Sunday. People know where to go to find good food, great coffee & awesome service. I'll return here...soon!

This is a great way to rid yourself of "last summers" fashion etc, make room for the new, and if these organisations can make a dollar or two from my donation then hoorah for them! On one such excursion I found myself in Onehunga Mall early on a Saturday morning and in dire need of a mocha! I headed to Brick By Brick Cafe, located at the top of the Mall where I knew I could park my car right outside with minimum fuss. Initially I thought the place was closed as at 8.00am the interior was bereft of patronage but as I pressed my nose against the glass door, it opened. I was immediately struck by the most alluring aromas; think freshly baked mouth-watering wares being hauled out of hot ovens by the tray full! Swallowing my drool, I ordered my mocha and pointed to the most delicious looking savoury muffins (still in the baking tray) and asked for one (I had to fight the urge to order all six!) Helping myself to a chilled glass of water, I sat down and began to peruse my surroundings. I've no idea what this building was in its former life but it is a most impressive structure; spacious, cool interiors, large ceiling to floor windows and my seat was a couch, trendy and extremely comfy. My muffin and coffee duly arrived and with the beaming smile from the waiting-person, I was left feeling most welcome and quite at home! The coffee, muffin and chilled water were all superb and the cheerful farewell on my departure, more than warranted the $5 tip I left on the table. My only regret: I didn't order the other 5 muffins. Maybe on my next visit!
