What a gem!!! At first it looked like just a kids book store but it isn't. There is a section for adults with different genres, Classics, YA with different genres, and then lots of children's choices. They also have plenty of stickers, note books, pens, pencils, and all kinds of goodies. This store is curated to perfection. It may be small but it is mighty. I wanted half the stuff I looked at! Oh my goodness... how have I not left a review this place? (Forgive me!) This is hands down the best bookstore ever! The store and its staff are all amazing. Pippi the cat is the friendliest and softest cat you'll ever meet--literally the most perfect bookshop kitty! The selection of children's book is wonderful. The store is incredibly inviting to children and adults alike. There are a ton of events for kids as well as book clubs for adults. (I've gone to an adult book club meeting and had the pleasure of meeting wonderful people!) the store also carries a ton of signed editions which makes book buying even more special! They also have jellycat stuffed animals which are so cute and soft! It's a great place to buy books and gifts. There is plenty of free parking in the lot behind the store in the public parking area, as well as metered parking right out front. read more

I'm a huge bibliophile! I don't think I've ever walked past an open bookstore without stopping and yesterday was no different. We walked into the well lit, colourful, and charming space and were immediately greeted by the staff of three and a cute shop kitty named, Pippie. Because of a shirt I was wearing we all began talking about our favourite horror movies. The shop was setup perfectly with great displays for kids and adults, puzzle lovers, those of us who love a knick-knack, and their Pride display was front and center. We walked around each area searching the shelves; I was not about to leave the store without purchasing something. Found the third book in a trilogy I've been waiting for. Goodness how have I never reviewed this gem before? Once Upon a Time might be my favorite store in Montrose, which is a high bar. My daughter has been going there since she was little and is greeted by name when she comes in. The amazing staff recommended a books for both of us and they are always spot on! Saturday 3/11/23 was my first visit to this store and was a very enjoyable experience. The day I came, they were hosting an author event. The store is well stocked with a wide and varied assortment of children's and YA books. The staff were all friendly and answered a few questions that I had. I do love a good bookstore, and this one was perfect. They have metered parking along the street with shops and restaurants to visit either before or after stopping by here. Such an adorable gem of a shop! Was having a treat at the ice cream place next door and went in on a whim--I had passed by it many times, thinking it was only a children's book store. If you describe the child, they will have a laundry list of book recommendations that the child is almost guaranteed to love. You can often even pair a book with a related toy. It's nice that Once Upon a Time is such an institution of Montrose, it's been around for 53 years!!! I was eager to check it out while I was in the area since I love books! The place is cute, full of charming X-mas decorations. As far as book selection, nice books for kids and young adults. You need those to instill reading in younger generations and create hope for the future. For that alone and this store deserves a lot pf praise, they know how to attract kids to books by having cool events, nice displays, selling other merchandise that is fun and cute and make great gifts. The adult book selection is minimal, we could use more titles than your regular best sellers. The classics are well represented, I loved some of their editions that I've never seen around. Could be nice collectibles. The store doesn't have a great book selection, sells other items, great for decor, gifts, etc. But since I love books, any store that tries to encourage reading does it well in my book. The team of friendly and helpful employees and the owners have created an atmosphere of joy and the experience of finding new books is made even more thrilling by signed author copies, author visits and lots of cool programming. There is also a beautiful selection of stuffed animals and charming seasonal gifts. Also, the store's cat, is something of a celebrity - you might be lucky enough to meet her when you visit. If you're feeling a bit cranky or frayed around the edges, or just in the mood for some wondrous and colourful children's books that'll bring a smile to your face, a trip to a bookshop could set you straight, even if the feeling's temporary. Walking into Once Upon A Time was my favourite possible way to spend a weekend afternoon recently. Now that's it's the holidays, there's even more books and gifts for you to peruse. Yes, it's a children's bookstore (the oldest children's bookstore in the nation actually!), but don't be fooled -- they have quite a good selection of fiction and non-fiction books geared towards the adult clientele. I even saw they had Michelle Obama's best-selling memoir 'Becoming' in there! They have a wide array of children's books for all ages (including young adult). I love flipping through them and admiring the illustrations. It makes me want to be a kid again! Ah well, I can at least live vicariously through my 4-year-old nephew and almost 2-year-old niece. Aside from the typical children's storybooks, they also have colouring and activity books, puzzles, plush toys, and games. Simply put, this bookshop is a gem. If you ever find yourself in lovely Old Town Montrose, make sure to stroll on over to Once Upon A Time and get lost in all their book selections. Some of the nicest employees I have ever encountered. They clearly love their work, and the community. Requiring masks as a children's store, when children cannot get vaccinated is not oppression- but a clear sign that they care for their customers. My family has come here for over 20 years. I came when I was a child and first getting the Harry Potter books, got all of my high school required reading books, and now I go here to get books as an adult. Charming, little bookstore in charming little Montrose Village. The decorations & book displays tend toward the younger set, as it should be. It's good to get young children hooked onto books as soon as possible if only initially to look at the pictures. Acquiring reading skills early may be a good indicator of success in school & later success in life. So it is understandable that Once Upon a Time would want to emphasize books for the young. However, I found plenty of books that were appealing. History, cuisine, cultures, science particularly interest me. I looked in their small but extensive Cooking section & found two books much to my liking: "Food in History", and "On Food & Cooking: The Science & Lore of the Kitchen". Both are great books. One touches on food & history of various cultures through the ages. The other explains why or how physics & chemistry affects the cooking process in order to improve on the techniques to make a better meal. The staff is helpful & friendly. Once Upon a Time is a good addition to the "mom & pop stores" that inhabit this delightful, comely village. For the most part, unlike Old Town Pasadena, Montrose Village has not succumbed to the big, bad chain stores & boutiques that suck the profit away from the community they are selling. The "mom & pops" usually live in or near the community so money tends to circulate in the community as well as more community service & donations to the community occur. This bookstore is so adorable. Everyone who works here are not only very friendly but they ae very helpful as well. They not only sell books for the kiddos of all reading and capability levels but they also sell some very cute little accessories and stuffed animals to go with the books. The books are diverse in their topics, stories, illustrators, etc. When have you ever found a Snow White board book illustrated by a Japanese individual who makes everything looks so much more delicate, dainty and feminine. I don't know what to say. I love this book store. It is so adorable and I hope and pray that they stay open for many many more years to come. I want to take my lil one for story time but it may be too soon as she doesn't have the patience to sit there for too long. I think it'd be fun but I don't think she's quite ready. Everything is reasonably priced and pretty clearly marked. I love their hand made card selection. There are some seriously talented and crafty people out there. I was so tempted to buy a few of their lil kids activity sets, totes, beautiful notebooks and note pads, etc. This is definitely a lil neighborhood gem. Stop on in if you are ever in the area.
