Although they didn't have the specific book I was looking for (I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings), they had the greatest selection of Maya Angelou books in comparison to the 5+ other places I went in search for it. Kind owners and the cutest dog were my first impression of the place, and prices seemed reasonable on all the books I browsed. A lot of older editions available. read more

Just found this book store right after visiting a fabulous vintage store called Owl Talk right next door, and decided to pop in. The two people working there didn't say hello and the only thing the woman on the couch could say to me was "Put your bag on the counter", not even "Hello, welcome to our store, would you mind leaving your bag on the counter?" That would've been friendlier. I don't get all of these reviews that say the people working here are friendly. I just don't get it. Big turn off for me read more

This is a tiny and worthy used bookstore of the type that there used to be all over L.A., but there still are a decent amount, just not the same ones. Many books are stacked on the floor or high up enough that you have to get up on a step ladder to reach them. That's the way a bookstore should be. Down with books sorted by color and bookstores that smell fragrant! A used bookstore should smell musty. This little spot on a nondescript segment of Eagle Rock Boulevard has a good fiction section and prices that are quite decent. read more

I would like to add this review because I am sick to my stomach how a friend was treated there. I was informed that when she headed in(btw this is her favorite bookstore) and was asked to place her purse(whichwas fairly big) behind the counter. What was more upsetting is that there was a white family inside with kids who had purses bigger than hers carrying them around. My friend was embarrassed because the employee(owners son she believes) told her out loud to place her bag down where the family heard. My friend(filipino) was offended and embarrassed and if you have a store policy, respect it with all types of guests who walk in. Disgusting. I hope this reaches others. This place was discriminating!!! They definitely lost her as a customer, which she has been going there for years. Be observant. Don't discriminate. Walking into this place felt like home. I am so beyond happy to have stumbled upon this gem of a bookstore. Floor to ceiling stacks of used books, the musty smell of hundreds of thousands of pages among the shelves and a dog that keeps you company while shopping. Absolute perfection. This place is not for those who like clean, neat and tidy bookstores. This hole in the wall book store is my little getaway when my brain needs to de-stress. They have quite a collection of current and old books wall to wall, floor to ceiling *grin* The owners are extremely nice and helpful which is a big plus in my "book" As a book collector and avid reader, I found some great finds at this place, hardbound 1st/1st and signed young adult reads. The books are reasonably priced, most in good and some in fine condition. I am so glad that in these day and age where electronic books shutdown major bookstores and shops, this mom and pop bookstore continues to open its doors to the young and old. I always come here and this family owned establishment is definitely worth supporting. The married couple is extremely knowledgeable and always have great recommendations. The store is small but the shelves are maxed out with a wide selection of books. They always know where the book you're looking for is and they can pick it out for you super quickly. They offer great price reductions even though the books already are marked with a price, they will usually drop it down a few dollars which is awesome. The children's book selection is pretty quaint too and you can generally find whatever classic kids book you want. If you love the feel of small bookstores READ BOOKS is the spot. (They also play fantastic music off their vinyl record player too if you are going to be browsing for a while.) The parking is limited but there's plenty of spots on the street. I never thought I'd find a store that would actually compete with my trusty Brand Bookstore in Glendale. Read Books completely changed my mind. Though it's a super tiny neighborhood bookstore, it's jammed with plenty of interesting used and rare books. Though it doesn't have Brand's massive collection, Read Books has plenty of options to choose from and has an amazingly friendly and helpful owner. Furthermore, I really like that they also have a newsstand with unique magazines like Giant Robot. Definitely stop by if the drive to Glendale seems to daunting. Oh, well, I'm a sucker for any independent book seller where you are greeted at the door by Ad Busters and The Believer magazines, the wonderful smell of pulp and an owner with a very wry sense of humor. I do so love their selections of magazines. And they always have that beach-read best seller you want as well what was on your college reading list that you never got around to reading... well that is until now. I like the owners. Good recommendations (Patricia Highsmith when they didn't have the Raymond Chandler I wanted). This is a wee, but mighty store, stocked with delightful finds. Allow yourself some time to peruse the stacks and you'll be sure to find something wonderfully unexpected. We like their selection of children's classics too- a super gift for the young reader on your list. Or better yet, bring a young reader along! The owners are supportive of children reading, prompting their juvenile customers to topics and book selections that they love. A couple of reviewers cited/ mourned that there are no 1/2 price deals since the advent of eBay. Well guess what...? That is true now everywhere you go. So please, don't expect a used bookstore to support your 1986 fantasy of what a used bookstore was. By far one of my favorite places I could be In here for hours! Such a good place for people who read lots of books and need inexpensive used books. They have a really good variety of authors and genre. I love the fact that they carry about a whole shelf of my favorite author! They also buy back some books but they have to be ones that are in demand and that they don't already have. Parking is mainly whatever you find on the street. I usually pay cash because they give you more of a discount. read more

I walked in today to buy the September issue of Vogue, I walked out with it AND a first edition hard back of a Don DeLillo book AND two issues of Happy Peach food magazine. Me happy good. This is a little but well stocked used bookstore with a small selection of magazines as well. Everything is organized fairly clearly and in certain sections the shelves are almost stuffed. I disagree fully with the previous reviewer who said this store had a "paltry" selection. Yes, the store is not Circus of Books down in Long Beach, but that also means it's pretty easy to navigate and browse. If you needed to grab a classic novel for a class at nearby Occidental, you're probably going to find it here. There's a good section of cookbooks, kids books and a nice little poetry section too. Nothing is ever going to be Boarders, baby. They closed those all down! Supporting little bookstores like this is all you got left. That and that horrid, huge, impersonal Barnes and Noble in that horrid mall in Glendale. HORRID. read more

Read Books is by far the cutest bookstore I've ever been to. It is locally owned by a lovely, helpful, and friendly family. Read Books is really, really, really small. I would say they have a few rows as in 4 to 5 but the shelves are filled to the brim. They also have piles of books throughout the store. The shelves are labeled but can still be a bit overwhelming but fear not the staff is more than helpful when suggesting a good read so don't hesitate to ask. When it comes to parking they don't have their own parking lot but there is more than enough street parking. Overall I love supporting local businesses especially if they have something fantastic to offer- solid books, reasonable prices, nice atmosphere, and a friendly face. Things I love . . . Very small used bookseller on the east side of Eagle Rock Boulevard, across the street from Foster's Freeze, a little south of Colorado Blvd. The parking here is pretty hard to come by, and some of the street parking near by is metered which makes it even more of a pain in the rear. This store is very small (probably the size of my living room) and part of a much larger building so it is easy to miss driving by (don't look for the "read" on the sign Look for the easier to see "BOOKS" on the sign). Inside the store you will find a big selection of used books piled high on the shelves and on the floor, there are many random subjects, in the front near the window is the children's books, they also have some magazines. While I was there the owner was helping his kid do his math homework, so we didn't get much help, which is fine with me cause it's a pretty small store to explore. All in all its a nice little used book store, worth checking out if you are already in the area and like poking around looking for odd and unusual finds. read more

This has to be my favorite bookstore. Whenever I'm back in my hometown, I always try to drop by, and, whenever I do, they always seem to have what I'm looking for. The charming owners, their dog, their great selection of books, and the quaint atmosphere make me come back to it, again and again. I've also written about it several times in some of my stories. Dog. Friendly. Stayed open a little late. Good selection. I'd driven by this bookstore several times on the way home from work, and the other day, I decided it was finally time to drop in and check it out. When in walked in, I was greeted by a kind lady and her sweet dog. We chatted for a few minutes and then I got to saunter around the store for a bit. Since it was close to closing time, I felt like I should hurry so they didn't have to kick me out. They had a bunch of books packed in a tiny shop, which is exactly how I like it. I ended up picking up a book about Nas and a book of poems by Sandburg. I told her I was trying to hurry so they could close, and she told me that she was in no rush, and encouraged me to continue looking around. I said I was done, and that I would definitely be back.
