My review is strictly devoted to a synopsis of CCS' Manoogian Visual Resource Center…read more I attended a poetry reading by Anna Vitale, Lynn Crawford, and Anselm Berrigan tonight that was hosted by CCS' Manoogian Visual Resource Center. The space is awesome. Upon entering, you're treated to an all-sorts smorgasbord of visual graphics, design, art, and product creation. I'm not sure it's an art gallery so much as a giant display room of the many directions CCS students have oriented themselves, from the purely aesthetic to the purely economic. Whatever their direction, the art/ design/ commodity display in the main foyer is very impressive and excellently arranged. Bright, roomy, colorful, and begging you to explore, gawk, stare, and meander. The side room that hosted the poetry reading was spatially ideal. Wedged into a corner, the readers were bannered by bright visual art, paintings and collage, which gives a vocal performance of poetry a nice visual counterpoint. The corner-tuck also allows for chairs to be arranged in a radiating pattern in relation to the lectern, so you can cram quite a few people into the gallery space. The ONLY let down was the sound set-up. The acoustics of this space are kinda poor. The ceilings are VERY high, and the readers are competing with a very loud ventilation/ temperature control system that creates a background interference level noticeable ABOVE "white noise". Their in-house lectern is also a little low, which means the mic is a little low, which means the amplifiers are pumping out a lot of dead "hiss"... staff should re-work the sound set-up to achieve live performance-worthy audio. The night was catered with delicious wines at donation cost. And there's free parking for about 25 cars out front, plus street parking (just across from the DIA/ Detroit Film Institute, on John R - one street east parallel to Woodward). All in all, a really great space to book a public arts event. Super job CCS.

My friend and I decided to go with 24 x 24 selection which gives you a 3hr class time and you have a little extra additional time if you go over. You get to select your own image - if its TOO DETAILED then he'll let you know. Currently he request the image 24hrs before the class - you'll notify you through email and text. Please note - you won't be able to take piece home until after two days but he'll reach out when its ready because he needs to put the finishing touching/sealing the rug with glue. There are a variety of colors available - you even have the option of playing your own music but we declined and asked him to put on some music which we vibe too. As of right now - the max amount of people are 6 but i think special requests for highly numbers in the future - if you don't know then just reach out. I'm already trying to see how i can get my job to approve a corporate class which he informed me that there's an option for a pop-up session. At the end of the day - DO THE THINGS; TRY SOMETHING NEW. I met Bette Prudden at her studio in order to look at some of her work. Bette is an energetic,…read moreengaging, older woman, who has been working as an artist and an art instructor for over 50 years. She works in a variety of materials, and there is a fair amount of work (30+ paintings) available to see here. There were no portraits displayed when I was there, despite the fact much of her work was, and still is, as a portraitist. Be advised that this is a working studio. It's not neat, and it's not laid out like a nice gallery. And it's in a very non-descript building on a neglected section of Mack Avenue. She paints here. And holds classes here. Work happens here. The day I was at the studio, there were a couple of her students there, and they had been pupils of Ms. Prudden for years. I didn't engage in anything other than small talk with them, as I was there to look at Ms. Prudden's work with an eye towards potentially purchasing a piece, so I can't comment on the instruction part of this business. I'm assuming that if it's been happening for decades, then they must be doing something right. I'd advise calling before you get in your car and drive over - Ms. Prudden maintains a pretty active schedule, and the hours she's at the studio vary.

Because it's in the Pointes, the caliber of clothes there is pretty nice. They must weed out any schlocky stuff because it's all nice and frequently high end. In the last month I walked out of there with Franco Sarto boots for $5, multiple Ann Taylor & Banana Republic & J Crew sweaters, nice shirts & tops, you get the idea. They have some kind of 'special' every day, whether it's 50% off, buy one get one, or my favorite recently, everything for a buck. That's right, a buck. If you're not too embarrassed to shop at a resale store, come on by. Finally, the youth that work there are so nice and are really happy to help you out. So not only are you getting a bargain, you're supporting a great organization.
