Alice was so helpful and found me the perfect frame at a good price too! Over the next couple months I found several non-valuable pieces of art: A poster I bought on the street in Italy, an old print that my husband had from decades ago, a piece of art my young son did in the middle school art class, Xerox copy of an original architects drawing.... I took them all in and Alice helped me find the perfect options for each one. Frames that matched beautifully, the right type and color of mat, even the right type of glass, or not glass, as the case may be. Every single piece worked out beautifully and I was so excited to hang them all in the place as I had chosen. I highly recommend framers workshop for their expertise, creativity, amazing customer service, really fair prices and general kindness.

There are a myriad of talented and exceptional people living in this space and creating and showing and generally making a scene in the best sense of that word. The spaces for the installations are just gorgeous. And the living spaces are so generous. Since my more bohemian days as an artsy-fartsy 20-something living in a basement of a huge…read morewarehouse/art gallery, I've had bouts of nostalgia for those live-work spaces that literally make you live and BREATHE your very art. Dust, paint, fumes, sweat, tears, blood, and lord knows what else becomes part of the particulate air flow. And of course Detroit has gotten a lot of press for being the new frontier for artists, the tabula rasa for experimenters and corporate-job-evaders but I admit to not witnessing much of this. Partly because all this opportunistic real estate and art endeavors are a little too ethically problematic for my taste, so I avoid them altogether. But hey, when you need to go support someone for their MFA thesis project, you STFU and convert your reticence into acquiescence. When all is said and done, I liked this space. Then again I'm a sucker for virtually anything housed in a domestic realm that is not traditionally domestic. There's a bathroom and a kitchen and two large'ish rooms in which to mill about and wax poetic. I saw a set of stairs leading up but did not take them (as it did not seem to be open to the public for this particular exhibition). The images on the website also suggest that there are other houses and other yards/landscapes in which various artists display their work. Come summer it might be worth checking out. From what I can gather, there are no set hours here - mostly just open for gallery openings. But I overheard someone saying that you can call ahead and make an appointment to stop by (perhaps the curators/owners/proprietors also live on premises). If you're so inclined to hop on the Detroit-art-tourist train, this might be a worthwhile stop. If not, then just walk on by.

Ok here are the positives: It's definitely different and innovative. With Painting with a Twist…read more(and the likes) becoming so popular, this concept of making framed signs, pillow cases, clothed signs, etc., is quite new. And with the end product, there's a greater chance of you putting it on display at home than putting up a painting (unless you're really good at it). The problem I have is with the stencils and the quality of them. When you put a stencil onto the piece, you should never have to worry about paint bleeding out. Hence, the purpose of the stencil. Yet, this continued to happen. Even putting the stencil on the piece (which is done by a member of staff) proved to be very trying. All of this led to wasted time. Our class was 4-630 pm and at 715 pm, my piece was still incomplete. I ended up having to leave it there as we had reservations at 715 pm, and will have to pick up the finished product later on. I definitely think they need more staff to help people along and stay within the allotted time. Also, they definitely need better stencil sticking paper, because that whole thing was super annoying. The staff were very helpful and kind-- just not enough of them. This will probably be my last time going.

I'd also recommend checking to see when openings are as they'll likely be open later and you can see the space buzzing with people.
