Tteokbokki and shrimp tempura.
Emily H.

Went here for lunch a second time! Food was again amazing. I got the tteokbokki and the shrimp tempura this time and both were great. i wish the tteokbokki was a little less soupy (i like my tteokbokki sauces to be thicker) but it was still super delicious. Service is always great and the staff are always friendly. Not many places to sit if you're eating in, but still a great atmosphere if you do dine in.

Summary: Sushi rolls were good, but too loosely rolled (so fell apart) and sliced too thin. My brother came over for lunch with his kids one day and the kids wanted McDonald's (which he got for them) but he and I did not want McDonald's, lol, so we ordered some rolls from On Rice through UberEats. We got the On Rice Maki Platter, which was $50 and came with 40 pieces. So 8 pieces of each type: Red Dragon, Yam Tempura, California, Salmon, and Spicy Salmon rolls. The Red Dragon rolls were shrimp tempura and cucumber rolls topped with salmon and avocado. The shrimp used were tiny because the shrimp tempura was mostly batter. The batter was crunchy though, and the roll tasted good, but it had very little protein, lol. We received a standard sized roll, but each slice was cut too thin, we ended up getting more than 8 pieces, but it was the equivalent of 8 pieces, since a standard nori sheet was used. The roll was also loosely wrapped, so combining loose wrapping with thin slices and the result was very messy - the rolls fell apart very easily. The Yam Tempura roll had the same issues as the Red Dragon roll: sliced too thin and too loosely wrapped. This roll has yam tempura and cucumbers inside and was topped with tempura bits and bits of deep fried shallots. It was crunchy. The other rolls were of normal thickness (so we got 8 pieces of each), but still loosely wrapped. They fell apart less since they were thicker. The California rolls had artificial crab, avocado, cucumber and masago. I know this is one of the most basic of rolls, but I enjoyed it. The Salmon rolls were just salmon. Pretty plain, but tasted alright. The Spicy Salmon rolls were salmon, avocado, sauce and tempura bits. I enjoyed this one, even through it wasn't all that spicy. We requested no sesame seeds and our order came without sesame seeds and even had a sticker on the lid that said "no sesame seeds." :) My brother and I shared the Maki Platter and it was a good size for lunch for the 2 of us. Since we ordered on UberEats and our purchase was over $40, we got a free order of vegetable gyoza (that was the promotion at the time). We got 4 pieces and these usually retail for $7. They were good for free, but I wouldn't have wanted to pay $7 for them. They were fairly small and nothing too special in my opinion. They were deep-fried and had cabbage, carrots and clear noodles in them. Overall, I found the food to be good for what it is. The rolls were not high quality but in taste were on par with casual sushi takeout restaurants like Kiramaki Sushi and Sushi29, although the other places have better roll-wrapping technique. I'd say 3.5 stars for the food, but rounding up in good faith. I would return to try their other dishes. They offer Korean as well as Japanese food, so might try their Bibimbap next time.

It was our first-time trying it because the original restaurant we wanted to go to on Somerset was closed, but we were definitely not let down. They open at 11:30 on the weekend and we were a bit early but the staff was super friendly and accommodating- letting us sit down, browse the menu and even place our order before they "officially" opened. Out of all the dine-in korean restaurants we've tried so far in Ottawa (which I know is quite limited and most aren't authentic- but that's not to say they aren't good): Alirang, Maht, Daldongnae, etc. This is definitely top tier AND we will be coming back. As a small business, they are generous with their refillable complimentary side dishes (which is so yum), the flavour HITS, and the service is so good and welcoming. They kept checking in with us, turned down the volume to the TV that we were sitting under, and kept refilling our tea. inside the restaurant is also quite spacious and has comfortable seating arrangements. But we were sitting next to the AC which can be quite breezy!

The restaurant is clean and tidy, which made the experience even more pleasant. Service was attentive, though with only a few tables it's hard to fully judge. Still, everything we needed was taken care of. The food was fresh, portions were generous, and prices felt fair. I especially appreciated that their pancake wasn't overly oily like you often find elsewhere. Dishes leaned on the milder side which made it easy to enjoy everything. The kimchi was a little salty, but the pickled radish was a nice balance. Big plus: they serve Asahi draft, which you don't see everywhere. One small miss was the sundubu being accidentally left off our order, but no big deal, just an excuse to come back and try it next time along with the Kalbi. Seating was comfortable, and I loved the individual wireless table lamps at each table which added a nice touch. Overall, a great first experience and I would definitely return to explore more of the menu.

The tteokbokki or rice cakes were good. The texture was perfectly chewy and the sauce was spicy and sweet. However, for the price, I found the portion to be a bit stingy. The bowl looks large but there isn't much in it, and considering rice cakes aren't that expensive I'm surprised they gave so little. The chicken drumsticks were tasty, but a tad dry. Not sure if it's because they slit it open at various places to let it cook faster. It didn't have the same type of coating as other Korean fried chicken I tried either. Overall, service is attentive and food is good. However, I think I have other places that I prefer for Korean fried chicken in Ottawa.

We ordered the Army Pot which was spicier than expected, but still enjoyable. Side dishes were okay, and the kimchi pancake was a bit salty for my taste. Ordered an Asahi Super Dry and an order of Beoseot Bulgogi. The beer was super cold, and the Bulgogi came sizzling hot (with a cup of rice and three side bowls) side bowls were toasted sesame flavoured bean sprouts, sweet sauce on turnip, and kimchi). The Bulgogi was not as flavourful as I've had at other establishments. But otherwise it enjoyed. Servers are not very personable. No greeting, just ask how many, seat me in a booth with menu and a slip of paper to write my choice on. 20 minutes later had to wave at them to comeback to take the slip. Btw, at the Merrivale location don't take the first booth, the door is inches behind your bench and everytime the door opens you are blasted with cold air. One other interesting thing to note. My bill didn't seem to be correct. I noticed it was a little higher than I expected, but I tipped 20% and left. I was only given the transaction record. The bulgogi on their menu is $15.95 (as per website), I am pretty sure the beer was $7.95. That totals $23.90. But my bill was $34.92 before tip. $41.90 after tip. So, something happened. But I guess it's my fault for not bringing it up while there.

The food was good, with enough quantity to eat and take home as leftovers. We were a party of nine taking the regular (not BBQ), so they put two tables together for us. Our only complaint about that was that the tables were not the same height. The amenities (restrooms) were not very pleasant, as the trash cans looked as if they have not been emptied in a month (they were overflowing), and there was toiled paper on the floor. In addition, the floor did not look very clean. Food: 4 | Service: 3 | Atmosphere: 2 Recommended dishes: Beef Ribs, Miso Soup Kid-friendliness: There aren't any meals for kids, so you would mostly likely get a couple of dishes and get plates to share.

The side dishes were also quite good! My mandu were slightly burnt/over fried but the delicious and unique filling paired with the good sauce provided made it fine. My only issue is that when I try and return, craving their hearty kimchi stew on a cold day, their hours don't match what's posted online or on the paper outside their restaurant? For example, there's a paper sign on the door that says they take a break from x-3pm , on a day I was reallly looking forward to the comforting stew and warm vibes. I check at 3pm and their OPEN sign is off, alright maybe they need a minute or 2, so I do some rounds and pass by it a few times with it still being closed, I go back home and come back around 4:30 which is well past their reopening time and it's still closed. I gave up cause I was starving and went elsewhere. If this could be updated or made more clear then this review would be much higher. I love the food and it's genuinely authentic Korean food but it's frustrating having plans to go for lunch or even an early dinner and having them squashed by an inconsistent hours schedule.
