Johnathan is my favorite dance instructor at Omni Salsa. His friendly disposition has made him a personable instructor; the bits of humor he adds to common mistakes makes the class enjoyable. The music starts. No metronome here. Johnathan starts counting... As he breaks down the steps, he counts. 1...2... 3... 5...6... 7... 1...2... 3... and 5...6... 7... The music fades into the background; my concentration narrows in as I listen to the instructor count off, demonstrate steps, and try to follow his example. The foot steps following the salsa patterns form their own beat, as the class moves in unison. Since, I am taking classes with my group, Social Spanish; we received 50% off the normal student price. If you can get a group of friends to take the class with you; you can save a bundle off the normal price. If not, you can get a week long trial for free, if you swing by their location and pick up a business card. ;o) It's a nice way to get started into the genre that strikes your fancy. Friday nights, I spend 60 minutes of my evening in the company of Spanish speakers, as we learn salsa 101. The new faces have become familiar faces. We greet one another and chat about our day, and before I know it, it is time to start class. So far I am pretty pleased with what I've learned, and I am looking forward to future steps I'll learn. There are so many genres of latin music, I'd like to learn to dance to; some days I wish I could learn several simultaneously, but I'd rather stick to one at a time,. read more

I was giving an 1 star rating, but I have to give Nataly another star ever since I started taking her lessons and she is one of the best teachers I have ever had! Yes, 5-Star for Nataly! I am taking private lesson with her. 4 hours/ week. She knows what I need, she explains so well on such a little thing, and she is a great teacher! A week ago I went to the studio. A girl Nataly gave me Jonathan Rodrudgez contact number for private lessons. Today, I sort out my work schedule for the next few months, so I called Jonathan and told him that I would like to sign up for the Early Bird 48 hours lessons for a price of $1,680. ( please see the first picture I posted or you can go check out their website for the packages they offer) On the phone, Jonathan mentioned nothing about the price. What he said to me was that he will check his schedule and then get back with me. 30 minutes later, I received his text ( please see the second picture) Where is the price of $2,400 coming from? I am sure it is not on the website! read more

I noticed there didn't seem to be any recent reviews. I think Omni has been a great place to learn both Salsa and Bachata. The instructors and very thorough and knowledgeable, and even the group classes are small enough to where you still feel that you're getting individualized attention. Mario, Joana, Emilie, and Mike are all great dancers to learn from, in my experience. This was my very first time taking dance classes so I was a bit overwhelmed with choosing which studio to join, but a close friend of mine swore to me that they were legit - and he was right. The studio itself is a bit cozy but that's more or less the feel of an actual dance club so it's great practice. And they have free classes the first week of every month and a social every third weekend of the month. read more

I haven't taken any classes at this studio so this review is based completely on their Friday night salsa social. The event was absolutely fantastic! The Spicy Salsa Social is held on the last Friday of every month. For only $10 you can spend the night enjoying a wide variety of Latin music and dancing with all levels of salsa dancers. If you just like the occasional fun night out but have never taken a salsa class, you will still be able to enjoy yourself. There is a lesson to go over the basic steps and teach you some ways to spice up your dancing before the social begins. Dancers of all levels come out to enjoy the music, dancing and socializing. Additionally, you can BYOB to enjoy or share or bottles of water can be purchased on the premises. What I enjoyed most was that the more experience dancers didn't dismiss the novices. Rather, they would ask them to dance and patiently coach them through the dances, giving them the opportunity to leave the social a better dancer than they were when they arrived. read more

Omni is the best place to learn how to dance Salsa. I've tried other studios and Omni by far is the best value for the money. Where else can you go and try it out for three classes free, no obligation. Who else gives you the opportunity to continue and repeat those classes three times a week at the lowest price in the area. They also have socials twice a month that are free to students and that are a great place to practice and improve one's dancing skills. It's not just about the money with Mike, he really wants to teach people to dance. Other studios rush you out the door when your hour is up to get the next class in, Omni gives you the chance to practice before and after class. You will learn how to dance here. read more

I went for the FREE Salsa lessons and I can't tell you how much fun I had. I enjoyed the repeat of the steps and the ability to change partners because believe it or not you dance differently with each person. Great place, nice and clean, professional studio. I will be BACK. My idea of a good photo would be one in which someone is actually dancing like a group photo of one of the classes YEAH. read more

Best classes, especially the private's. Will tailor class to your learning style. Friendly. Fun.

If you want to learn how to dance salsa, go to Omni. Mike and Jonathan are, in my opinion, two of Houston greatest salsa instructors! The teaching style and class material at Omni really focuses on learning/drilling proper techniques, rather than just patterns. It may seem to move slower than some of the other studios in town, but it definitely makes for a better dancer in the long run! Personally, I've been dancing at Omni for almost 2yrs and have taken both group classes and private lessons. Group classes are fun, informative, and a great way to meet new people. The brothers keep the classes in order and moving. Private lessons are perfect for developing skills, advancing more rapidly, and solving personal dance issues. Also at Omni, you will have the opportunity to join one of several dance teams throughout the year, learn a choreographed routine, and perform it at many different kinds of events! I've had a great time doing several of these from salsa, chacha, and even Micheal Jackson's "Thriller"! Omni is really focused on salsa, but also teaches a couple of levels of bachata and merengue. They have outside instructors come in to teach Argentine tango and even hip-hop, African, and dancehall classes. Also, they can teach several other dance styles in private lessons. Mike and Jonathan give you various opportunities for dancing outside the classroom. They make sure you stay up to date on places to go in the salsa community and host several organized socials each month. Groups of students have even started organizing large outings to area salsa clubs! So if you're looking for a salsa studio, Omni is a great place to be! read more

You know those people having fun making all those twisty turn-y moves at salsa clubs. I'm not one of them. I tried learning salsa by taking those free dance lessons at salsa clubs and I tried learning it online through Youtube but I ended up making me and any girl unfortunate to dance with me look really bad. That's why I'm taking lessons here as apparently you have to put in some hard work to have fun. No, this place isn't at the Omni hotel. It's located near the corner of Richmond and Chimney Rock next to Popeye's chicken and an middle eastern restaurant. The parking lot, which seem to be under some major construction at the time of this review, gets full as the time for salsa classes approaches. The class room consists of a good sized dance studio. Everyone checks in at the desk by the door to and writes their name on labels so everyone knows your name, but I could call myself "Cornelius" and no one could care less. Class then starts up with everyone going though salsa drills: basic steps, side steps, right turn, left turn, suzy qs, 3+3, slide, coombia(?) and others that I don't remember. When I first went through this I was wondering if I was in the right class but If you don't know them all it's okay since they are all steps you will learn eventually as you go through the classes. Everyone then guys and girls will pair up. If there are more guys/girl during class, they would have the extras spaced between couples so that everyone gets to dance with a partner as rotation of partners goes pretty quick. I did a full month for Salsa I in which I learned to do the basic steps, right turn, left turn, and the cross body lead. We also learned how to lead and the hand positions while turning. But what's important is that they help you learn by developing muscle memory so to speak and by dancing with several different people. The class progression is as follows: 1 month at level I and 2 months at level II to advance to level III. I still have a ways to go since my move set is still limited, I have to verbalize 1, 2, 3...5, 6, 7, move around with large steps, etc...but hopefully I'll be able to pull off impressive combos with out someone calling out the moves. read more

When I first moved to the U.S. from Puerto Rico was around the time that Ricky Martin blew up with "The Cup of Life". So of course every person I met asked me if I could dance like Ricky Martin. Of course I would lie my ass off and said yes but my secret shame is I must be the only Puerto Rican that can't dance. That said I finally decided to do something about it and take some salsa lessons. I ended up choosing Omni Salsa based on proximity to my house and the fact that their first group lesson is free with no strings attached. As Alexandra described in her review, Jonathan does a great job of breaking down the steps to the very basics. The pace might be a bit slow at first but for somebody with two left feet like me it works. Ended up paying $40 for four lessons once a week. You can bump it up to 3 lessons per week for $70 so if you have the time commitment that's a good deal. During our time taking lessons it always seemed like there were more guys than girls, but Omni Salsa always had a few regulars come in to make sure there were enough ladies to do partner work. The vibe is super friendly and they really try and give some individual attention even in a group setting. They also send out text messages with invites to go out and practice your new moves throughout the clubs in the area. If you want to learn how to salsa I highly recommend this place. I might actually brave a few moves next time I'm back in the island. read more

My boyfriend and I have been taking bachata classes at Omni Salsa Dance Studio for 3 months now. We both enjoy the classes very much! The instructors are extremely fun and friendly. They have social events, great way for us to meet new people, socialize and practice our dance patterns and styling. I highly recommend this studio. read more

I recently took a month of salsa classes here, about five years since I last took 3-4 months of lessons at the same school. The level of instruction and quality of facility have gone down a lot. Whereas before the owner and his brother were instructing various levels, including 1 and 2, now there is someone who is nowhere as good of an instructor. Whereas before, the instructor always had a dedicated partner to show the entire move, during most recent series of classes, the instructor did not have anyone, and just grabbed a higher level student whenever someone walked in the door (usually toward the end of the class). The dancing floor does not look like it was touched in the last five years, and has holes between laminate boards. I would be afraid to be a woman dancing in high heels here. read more

When i first got to Houston, i scouted around to most of the local dance studios. i'm one that does their homework first. i look not only for pricing, but for the best atmosphere and educational prowess. like most studios, i believe there is room for improvement to move Omni from good to greatness. however, i am a perfectionist. i stand by my word when i tell you that you will not be disappointed by these gentlemen's teaching abilities. if you practice and do what they they teach you, you can rest-assured that your two left feet will quickly become rightfully coordinated and gain you the confidence and ability to get out there on the dance floor to strut your stuff!!! Enjoy! read more

Used a Yelp deal here for beginner group lessons with my husband. I could only make Wednesday classes but the instructors were recommending newcomers attend Wed & Thursday classes. Due to work conflicts I could only go once a week but learned a lot in the month. We've had to take a break now but will definitely be coming back. Probably for private lessons so we can progress quicker. Love the instructors. With all things, you must practice at home so don't expect miracles if you're not willing to practice daily. read more

I've only just started taking salsa lessons a week ago here but I have been dancing salsa for five years now off and on. I was able to jump straight into their salsa 3 course but I am also taking salsa 2 to hone in on the fundamentals and salsa 1 to begin learning the part of the follow. The instructors at omni have something for everyone regardless of skill levels and they are not only amazing dancers themselves, they are also amazing instructors with easy to understand lessons and plenty of support. Omni is top notch and I highly recommend. read more

If you are looking for a professional fun salsa class; this place may disappoint. The skill level of the teachers is good; their mannerism is awful. If you don't mind being disrespected, screamed at, pinpointed, or kick out of a class for making a simple mistake, this is the place for you. The instructors are extremely rude. On multiple occasions, people have walked out of the class. I feel awful for the females, they are always targeted out loud in front of the class. Also the Mike guy, I can't speak the validity of this, we'll everyone says he's so crazy when teaching because he's always drunk. I wish my salsa experience was better here but, they will not allow me to enjoy the class without being yelled at. I recently checked out Amaya and dance factor! Very friendly instructors and professional. read more

Here's what I particularly love about Omni Salsa: I'm a pretty good dancer and a fast learner, but I'm also a world-class forgetter. I can pick up a new move in a few minutes, and then have almost no recollection of it a week later. Omni's regimen is one that has you rehearsing moves over and over. They demand mastery of the form, and push for muscle memory over building a repertoire of half-ass patterns. I feel like with Omni, I'm becoming a natural dancer. The instructors sometimes drive class like drill sergeants, but afterward are cool and laid back. Good socials, too. This is a place where you can become a really savvy dancer. Go there! read more

The people that attend and work here are great. Nataly , and Anyble receive 5 stars for their patience and harsh management they endure . The classes can be fun , and easy to socialize . However the owner and main instructor harasses , bullies , and kicks customers out . Females, in particular , run the risk of being publically humiliated or verbally attacked . For the guys he will just embarrass you then kick you out . I recently experienced an unprofessional, unethical harassment directly with Mike , the owner, which has inspired this truthful review . If you want to learn from a highly engaging and professional studio , I recommend the following : Amaya Studios, Salsa Eddy, Salrica Studios, and Culture Beat . These studios all work together and have a great respect for one another , they actually care about your dancing and you will have a better chance at being part of the Houston Salsero Scene ! Dale ! read more

Nice space, good location, nice moves, nice crowd; now all you need to work on Omni instructors is on your customer service and people skills. It's great that you have a system to place people where you feel they would benefit the most. However, if you have already a customer on the floor taking a class you owe that person respect no matter what. Phrases like "I'll sit you down if..." followed by "strike one!" yelled for everybody to hear...besides being plain rude, they make not only your target but everybody very uncomfortable. Please do your research; there exist much better ways of creating a fun/challenging learning environment. Other dance studios in Houston have figured that out. Besides, as I read, I'm not the only one that has had this experience at Omni; don't let that become a common occurrence. Maybe you all should take lessons from your staff at the door. In all fairness they do their best to treat your customers like paying customers. read more

I was also kicked out during the class by Mike just after making only two mistakes in the beginning of the class. I was humiliated in front of the other students. This was the worst experience I have ever had after I started to learn Salsa. I saw some others kicked out during the class as well. I also took classes at Salsaeddy and Latin Dance Factory and they are much better. Maybe Salsaeddy is the best. Also, in this studio, the ratio of male and female is 8:2 so male doesn't have enough time to practice... read more

I am writing review not about the whole school, but for our instructor - Nataly Majia. We wanted to have bachata as our wedding dance and had only two months to get ready. Nataly was super patient with us, extremely helpful and understanding. In 2 months we managed to have 3 mins dance with a lot of different moves. I have some dancing background, but my husband doesn't. After the dance my mother-in-law was so surprised, cause she never so him dancing! Nataly, you are the best We both wish you all the best:) read more

I signed up for lessons a month ago. They said they were offering a 2 months for the price of one, if you signed up tonight and tonight only. I did not request the deal in writing, my mistake. When I showed up tonight for the first lesson of my second month, I was told that I was no longer on the roster. They would be happy for me to pay for another month of lessons. All I can say is make sure you get all special deals in writing. read more
