This Italian Deli has been on my "must try" list (and Yelp collection) for too many years. With so many sandwich options, I read the Yelp reviews ahead of time and decided on the Cheesesteak. Service: The employees see you and remember you. From the moment I walked into the non-stop action until I left, the employees assisted and remembered me. After a welcome, one of the women at the front registers asked me and Joe S if this was the first time in the store. When I said "no," I was directed to the place my order at the deli. Ordering was easy and I was directed to pay at the register. The sandwich guys walk around the store, sandwich in hand, calling out the customer's name. When I ordered and paid for a second sandwich, both employees recognized me ("the same?" and "back again"). Food. Fresh, tasty, hefty-sized sandwiches. The large Cheesesteak sandwich was hand-delivered, and when opened, looked like so many pictures on the Yelp page. Melty, gooey cheese on the mass of thin, ribeye steak between a fresh hoagie roll with a lightly crusty outside and chewy inside. Grilled onions and hot peppers finished off the flavors. I enjoyed every bite. The Stasio - a house signature special was good, too, even though it wasn't on my to-try list today. Joe S and I split our sandwiches so we could sample each one. Don't sleep on the fresh pastries and Italian wedding cookies! Store Interior: Registers up front, grocery items on shelves in the middle, deli on the back right and counter seating by the windows. The place was very busy the Saturday I ventured inside. The imported Italian grocery items, the family pictures high up on the wall, and the overall feel reminded me of marketplaces overseas. I'd love to return.

The Vibe: From the outside, the shop is pretty unassuming, tucked into a strip mall--but that's often where the best deli spots are hiding. When we walked in, we were immediately greeted by a busy lunch rush and a fast-paced New York deli vibe, with staff cranking out sandwiches left and right. Always a good sign. What We Ordered: * Hot Rachel * Classic Italian * 1/2 lb pesto macaroni salad * 1/2 lb redskin potato salad We took everything home for lunch and... Every single thing was delicious. Sandwich Highlights: The Hot Rachel was exactly what you want from a deli sandwich--tender pastrami, melty Swiss, tangy slaw, and toasted rye all working together perfectly. Stacked high and full of flavor. My husband's Classic Italian was also fantastic, loaded with meats and that classic deli balance of flavors. Both deli salads were great, but the pesto macaroni salad was the standout--creamy, herby, and packed with flavor. We're honestly so excited to have discovered a great New York-style deli less than 10 minutes from our house. Safe to say we'll definitely be back soon to work our way through the rest of the menu. Pro tip: Don't skip the deli salads--grab one or two to share with your sandwich.

However, there's still no excuse for rude service. I walk in and go straight to the deli. If you know this place: You walk in, turn right and there is an aisle with coolers on either side. This leads to the back deli. It is cramped, but not terrible. A couple was in front of me. I could tell by the demeanor of the gentleman that they had been there a while already and the woman was asking multiple questions of the staff. No big deal. A little annoying, but some people are just talkative. This goes on, an estimate of say five minutes. Five minutes of a woman asking questions of the male staff member as the young woman staff member chimed in with information or an answer. At no point during this time did either of them acknowledge that someone was waiting or anything. No eye contact. Nothing. Finally the couple is done. The young woman behind the counter asks what I want. I order. In the middle of her slicing one of the deli meats, another customer comes up and asks for a pound of the meat she was currently slicing. Customer service will tell you to take care of customers in the order of arrival. Not according to this place. No, she decided to skip over me and service someone else. I understand that it was probably easier that way - given you might have to clean up between meats, or whatever else. And that's fine - IF YOU COMMUNICATE with the customer. The lady ordering the meat apologized. For reasons? It wasn't her fault. I appreciate it, but unnecessary. Finally after waiting for a longer time, the young woman behind the counter apologized for the delay. There never should have been a delay. Plus the sandwich was lackluster. I try to avoid big chains. I like small businesses. But when you treat people like this; why should I return?

I originally ordered sausage, egg, and cheese, but then I saw the bacon, egg, and cheese and asked whether I could switch it. The gentleman behind the counter said they could do both, then asked whether I wanted to add a hash brown too. Obviously, I said yes. He told me they would make basically anything I wanted as long as they had the ingredients, and I absolutely loved that energy. The sandwich was huge, super cheesy, messy in the best way, and packed with sausage, bacon, egg, and a crispy hash brown. It was a very generous portion and completely worth the price. This is definitely going into my breakfast-sandwich rotation. My fiancé ordered the Godfather, which was also delicious. It is definitely on the messier side, though, so if you are getting it to go or traveling any distance, I would recommend asking for the vinaigrette on the side. Ray's has strong neighborhood bodega vibes, generous portions, and the kind of menu where they are willing to customize your order instead of making things complicated. My only minor critique is that one employee could have been a little friendlier, but everyone else made the experience enjoyable. Another great visit, and we will absolutely be back.
