They have been independently and family-owned for over 40 years, and they are a must-stop for all book and music lovers out there. This store is HUGE with over half-a-million books, movies, music and memorabilia. However, I think what makes them extra special is the curated selection of Horror and Thriller books, including some very unique collectibles. I am more into contemporary, so keep in mind those books are located on the top floor of their second building. Their children's book section was also incredible but frankly I didn't have the patience to go through them. This store can be a little overwhelming so definitely take a breath and ask for help if you can't find the genre you are looking for.

However, I don't know if we caught them on a bad day, if their inventory was really low after Indie Bookstore Day the weekend before, or if the stars just weren't aligned that day but the store itself was very empty. The book selection was minimal and the staff was not exactly helpful. Frankly the store felt too big for the minimal amount of books they had. Also customer service was absent that day and after asking some questions to the person at the counter you could tell he just didn't want to be there. The difference in customer interaction between this store and others around Denton was like night and day. Would I come back to Patchouli? Maybe, but it wouldn't be my first stop when visiting Denton.

And you create a space that honors the building and updating it with warm wood and fixtures, you're doing it right in my opinion. There's a dedicated children's area with nice seating for them. There was a touch of magic there. Kids were happy and couldn't wait to get to the next book. That is what a book store is supposed to be about. I met the owners and both are genuinely nice and they care about their customers and their business. The children's section in the Denton Barnes & Noble store has the most visually exciting displays I have ever seen! When I walked towards the children's section and saw the fabulous displays on the walls, it drew me in, like a child walking into the storybooks we have all loved. Anyhow! I was finally able to visit the store in-person and was pleasantly surprised by their incredible selection. They carry mainly romance, romantasy and fantasy books, but I ain't complaining since that's what I read. On the back of the store they have a private seating area that feels very speakeasy-type. The store is very inviting and cozy, and the layout makes it easy to find whatever what you are looking for. The employee who helped me check out, even took the time to explain their free rewards program, and her help was much appreciated. The new location also has much easier parking, with plenty of spaces just outside their front door. The price quoted was a lot with a 10 week wait! But after they explained what repair entailed and what to look for when purchasing a BIble that lasts, I understood. I didn't get the name of the person that spoke to me, but she had excellent customer service skills and she used them, taking time to explain the process so very kindly. I decided to just buy the kid a new Bible (one not glued, but sown together, her recommendation) but if I ever need a book repair service, they will surely get my business. We came to the Book Doctor with a small devotional, quite honestly a lost cause with no cover or binding and several severely damaged pages. We were hoping for some sort of cover and binding to preserve it since it is of great sentimental value and over 90 years old. What we received back was a gorgeous gem, a true made-to-order family heirloom. Not only was the cover beautiful, the binding is a work of art and pages we thought were lost forever were delicately and expertly restored. We stand amazed. Again, if you expect to do it on the cheap and have it by next week, forget it. But if the book in question matters to you and you budget for time and money, plan in advance, make an appointment with one of their experts, then expect the best. These are artisans who will pour all their skill and experience into your valued piece and devote entire days solely to its restoration.
