I decided to go by the Noblesville, IN, location since I live nearby and browse the books. I found one that was really good. I take it to the front desk and walk to the first guy available. He rudely says I need to go to the other cashier who was already busy with another customer. I'm like OK. So when the other cashier was done and I told her that I wanted to purchase this book with a gift card; that's when I was forced into Barnes & Noble hell. The cashier apparently knew nothing about B&N policies, their gift card program, or even good customer service! Rather than go into specifics, this cashier tells me I could not use the gift card IN the store but had to use it ONLINE! I'm like what? You mean to tell me I have the book I want in my hand but I've got to go online to order it and pay shipping fees? She says yes and I thought she was absolutely nuts! It didn't make sense. So I press on telling this cashier I've done it before! She insists I couldn't use it in-store! I thought instantly my poor daughter who sent me the card was doing something nice for her dad and look at this stupidity! The cashier then consults the other rude cashier and he says thee same thing and I slam the book down and tell them I will NEVER shop at Barnes & Nobles again! The I call customer service for B&N and who do I get? Some Filipino 8000 miles away! I go home and do my research and nowhere on the B&N website does it say a customer can only use a gift card online. My experience at B&N changed my entire day! But while I'm on the subject of negative impressions of B&N, this new location is much smaller and there is a serious lack of place to sit and peruse the books! The chairs that are available are like those at the airport. Don't get up for a moment because someone is waiting and will take your seat since they are a hot commodity there! Also why is there a lack of technology magazines like the ones B&N used to carry? The magazine selection looks like the ones that used to be at CVS and other pharmacies! I will most certainly go ONLINE in the future to get my books. There are choices like Thriftbooks and Amazon available for my book buying rather than subject myself to the tyranny and very poor customer service of B&N.

But I still enjoyed seeing their thought-out displays and standard shelves. Their kids section is super cute and we found a fun scratch-and-sniff magnetic bookmark that we definitely walked away with. The shop owner was there and very kind when we spoke! I had a great time chatting and picked up a book basis the book keeper and a friendly customers recommendation. The store is small but still houses lovely reading couches and a kids play area. This is a nice spot if you are looking for something quite but not too far! They have their own book clubs and authors book reading events so do check it out!

The Whispering Shelf features a fabulous assortment of stationery/ cards, gifts, books with handwritten recommendations (always a sucker for these little personal touches from a bookstore) and an expensive children's section. I was especially enamored by the children's section and display. There were several interactive elements to keep kids busy while you peruse the shelves (smart!). They offer a variety of events throughout the month for book clubs, storytime and more. Can't wait for more future visits and to do our Christmas shopping here!

Poor Books a Million, how do you hang on?…read more When I first moved to Florida, I shopped at Books a Million because it was almost everywhere and Borders and Barnes & Noble weren't. The trouble was that they never seemed to discount anything and their savings card didn't seem to help, but cost me to have it. It seemed to be more for the Joe Muggs coffee shop inside the store and the trinkets at the cash register. This store is no different from the others. They have the magazines ("news stand") on one wall toward the outside of the store (the restrooms are near there) and Joe Muggs is at the mall entrance. The books and games, etc. are in-between the two. It's a compact store, but probably sufficient given the population and the likelihood that someone will actually buy. While I saw a few people working, no one bothered to say anything. The coffee shop was a lonely place, also, with only two customers. If it was Starbucks, they'd be having knock-down-drag-outs for seats. Nothing out of place for Books a Million. How do they stay in business?

They have a large selection of all genres I walked through... Its a medium sized spot but they fit a childrens corner in. I was pleased to find vintage Richie Rich and Sugar and Spike comic books for 1.00. This was certainly a wonderful place to stumble upon which had alot of gems inside. The vintage type writers were a really cool touch as well. Everything about this place was inviting and warm. At the cash register I came across an assortment of stickers and if you know me, you know I love stickers..Of course I grabbed a couple to complete my purchase. There is a space right by the door that has a sitting area, the leather chair was so comfortable but it was thw huge leather ottoman for me and the chess set that makes you wanna learn to play, if you do t already no how too.
