It's an area I just…read moreplain love, a unique combination of urban edginess, friendly people with just a bit of attitude (like me), and a surprising amount of cool businesses. SoBro Vintage Market is probably right on that line between what would be considered SoBro and Broad Ripple, though it undeniably carries a SoBro vibe. In case there's any doubt, this is a vintage market. The vibe tends to change here from visit to visit, though I'm not going to say I actually frequent the place because, quite honestly, it's not always particularly wheelchair friendly. Some of this stuff is vintage enough that I don't want to take a chance on breaking it with my chair. You can get art here. You can get music here. You can get clothing here. You can get some furniture here. If you look up this place on social media, you'll see that they actually have "& Curiosities" in their name - that's appropriate because they have quite a bit that I would simply call "curiosities." Prices range from "great deal" to WTF?" It seems like when I've been here, I've always seen quite a bit that falls into mid-century. That's kind of appropriate considering an awful lot of SoBro would fall into that era (including my home - a 1955 California ranch). When they are open, they are known for putting some items outside (which is how I finally stopped - I saw a wonderful retro dining room table that was to die for). People are friendly and knowledgeable. I honestly don't know a lot about the place, other than I find it to be ultra-cool, and I've never stopped by that I didn't see something I'd want (and will sometimes get). If you're into the vintage scene, SoBro Vintage Market is definitely worth a visit. If you have mobility issues or are a wheelchair user, just be aware that sometimes it gets pretty tight inside and you'll want to exercise caution.

Probably 75% of the store is clothing, shoes and accessories, but they also have a great selection of used books, DVDs, and even cassette tapes and VHS for the old heads. The prices are amazing. One of my kids bought a board game for $2, and the other found a Wii game for $3. There are lots of quality home goods and kitchen stuff, too. Nothing is junky -- you can tell that they are discerning about the items that they choose to display in the store. I visited the store on its second day of being open, and I noticed that it didn't have a sign out front yet. It's still early days for the store, though, so I'm sure they'll put a sign out at some point. In the meantime, just look for the banner that says "grand opening."

We found items of any and all categories, ranging from vintage concert tees, vinyl records, milk glass dishes and vintage jewelry to comic books, children's toys, books and more. In my opinion, most of the items were not priced to sell. They were being overvalued. The pricing was for the customer that comes in looking for a specific item for a specific purpose. We were just browsing for fun and unique finds and left with a pair of cuff links, a piece of costume jewelry, a few handkerchiefs and a book. We saw other items that we were interested in, but after doing some price comparison, we were able to find the same or similar items on online marketplaces such as eBay for less. The staff were kind and helpful. We stayed right up until closing time, and they never lost their professionalism or kindness like some businesses probably would when customers walk in moments before closing and disregard them when a shopkeeper reminds them. This was not us (we were there for about 2 hours), but I did witness this happening.

I could spend a whole afternoon here. There's lots of stuff to look at and paw through. Many antique stores have caught on to the fact that people like vintage things, and they have marked up their prices accordingly. The people at J.W. Riley's Emporium haven't gotten that memo yet, so the prices are really very good. (Shhh! Nobody send them that fax!) Of course, the prices vary by booth because each booth is rented by a different person. But overall, you can find lots of gems for low-low prices. There is an upstairs and downstairs. I didn't see an elevator, but perhaps there is one? Upstairs, there's a room that contains lots of frames and paintings, and it is the most quiet space that I've ever been to outside of a recording studio. It's kind of eerie. Just go past the creepy dolls and you'll find it. I could have left with bags and bags of things that I didn't need but really wanted. Instead, we just left with a t-shirt for one of my kids.

I'd always wondered about Vaeh's Treasures, a small strip center business located in the space I…read morebelieve was previously occupied by a yoga center at 56th and Emerson. This strip center also has Lincoln Square and a Dollar General directly across from it. So, despite being located at the end of the building it's at least a good thing that this entire area gets a decent amount of traffic. First off, according to their social media page (as of 1/20/23) their hours have changed to Monday-Thursday by appointment, Friday and Saturday 12-5, and Sunday from 11am-3pm. Vaeh's offers premium quality home goods at typically 40-70% off retail prices. They do have an online presence and you can order that way. This building is a little iffy in terms of accessibility with ramps at the front, back, and directly in front of Lincoln Square. The ramps are not quite ADA, though they are fairly close. Vaeh's has a relatively small storefront and the selection is mostly furniture, though they also are known to offer seasonal items, appliancs, art, and assorted other objects. It's a relatively quick stop, but if you're going to Lincoln Square or Dollar General it's a nice add-on if you can get here during their hours. I've been trying to spend more time in this area as I consider it my home area (I actually live about a mile south). Ultimately, there's lots of good stuff here and I would consider this to be a bit of a hidden gem here in Indy. Folks here are friendly, prices are good, selection is surprisingly good for such a small place, and it's a great way to support local. I'll definitely be back.
