We chose a Shropshire blue, Emmental from Switzerland and a soft cheese from France. The store was spotless, these ladies were very accommodating and knowledgeable and for 12 Bucks bought enough for a few days. The recommendations were excellent. In fact that and a Pret opened on the same corner, yet my co-workers come back every day with white Keen lunchbags. Suck it, Pret. Keen is a start-up by two cute English and French guys, they cook everything on the premises so it's fresh and made with great ingredients! They serve sandwiches on proper good artisan sourdough and brioche, fresh salads and hot pots of soup and chicken dishes. They also make fancy hipster coffee. Obviously. Mostly I love that they have little pots of chocolate mousse, fruit and posh yoghurts, for only £1.50, already making it better value than Pret. They are super friendly and obviously excited to be part of the community around here. My office love it for a reason and if you work around here, you should definitely support this little guy.

The chicken was moist but simply didn't taste of much. The best bite of the sandwich I had was when it was just the sauce, cheese and bread and I think that says it all. I don't think it's worth the massive queue - unless they start bottling those sauces for individual sale - they're a real highlight.

They serve it with a side of chocolates, so you could chew on the sweet merchandise to cut through the bitterness of the overly-roasted java. Service isn't always the fastest if you're sitting down to eat or drink, but it's more of a "come in and stay awhile" kind of place, anyway. If you are coming in to stay a while, however, expect to pay a lot more than the price of your coffee. My £3.60 oat flat white somehow turned into £6.36 when I got my bill. Considering everything you're getting in one stop, as well as the touristy area it's in, however, you could do worse. They even have a washroom, which - if you're familiar with this part of town - can be a Godsend.

I was at this food hall in December 2013. It's located on the ground floor of this large department store. The displays are extremely fancy and captivating. I could smell the croissants! You can get sandwiches, from egg salad to lobster rolls. Feel like steak and chips? Yep, you can get them here, too. I frankly couldn't tell you what you can't get here. I felt like a dream seeing so much good food, but it wasn't. It's definitely worth a visit, whether you end up browsing like me because the prices were steep or you end up splurging. There was a wine section that had shiny bottles of fancy wine varieties. You could get cheese to complement your wine. Everything in this store looked beautiful and elegant. I would do a few things differently when I return to this food hall: - I'd do afternoon tea. (We bought one with cucumber and one with bright pink dragon fruit.) For two sandwiches and two bottles of water, it came to £28.50. Not particularly inexpensive with the currency conversion (ouch!) but much cheaper than going out for lunch. Also, the sandwiches were delicious! A little sign proclaims that this confectionery was invented for an emperor several millennia ago. It's fascinating to watch as the chef starts with a piece of maltose sugar, which is elastic and this is formed into a ring shaped and with repeated dipping into toasted flour to keep the strands separate, is repeatedly stretched and twisted with each repetition tripling the number of strands. The final resulting collection of fine strands is then divided into small bunches which are put around crushed peanuts. Eaten immediately, these are soft and quite moreish. The chef says that these can be kept in the fridge but they will turn hard. It's entertainment as much as food which draws the crowds. Fun to watch but prices are a bit steep at £3 for one box and £10 for 4 boxes.

Freeman's supplies meat to a vast range of top end restaurants, clubs and institutions. Their real speciality is aged Scottish beef, it is the equal of any on sale in London without the totally impossible prices charged by the glitzier 'fashionable' establishments, it is superb beyond belief, they know it and take great pride in it often asking if I was satisfied with the last purchase. Another strength is their plain English traditional pork sausages, these are weep-ably good and come in two sizes. I don't know where they source their chickens but they are full of flavour, delicious and well worth buying. Freeman's really care about their products, they are ever keen for feedback from their customers and are always cheerful, respectful and most polite. There are two points that need to be noted. Because of the wholesale side of the business the shop closes daily at 12.30pm. In the summer the retail side of the business closes for the month of August, during this period I tend to become somewhat vegetarian! A real hidden gem.
