I have not had my hair done in quite some time, mostly because I am very picky. I get very nervous of anybody new doing my hair since my hairdresser moved away over 5 years ago! I was looking to get the remaining red undertones lifted out of my hair, to maintain a shade that was a bit lighter than my natural color (brown), and I was very clear that I did NOT want distinct / chunky blonde highlights. In summary: less red, closer to blonde than my natural hair color is, and NOT chunky highlights. I've included a photo of my hair color before for reference. The stylist I saw was so lovely and friendly! She did a very good job lifting out the red with color remover, leaving it pretty light, and then dyed it back to a base brown color. These highlights did not come out very well at all. My total for this appointment was $215, and I do not feel that the outcome reflects this cost. These pictures are from a day after the appointment. I contacted the store with the same pictures and expressed my concerns and the owner responded to me very quickly (within an hour or so!). She then told me that she spoke with the (again, very lovely) stylist. I do think it is important to note that this stylist was remedying a similar highlight situation on a different client at the same time as my appointment. The owner offered me the solution to either also remedy with the same stylist, or to pay full price to see a different stylist. I am a little worried to see the same stylist (NOT because of her personality or anything, but because of this outcome, which appears to have also happened to another lady very recently), but I cannot afford to pay this price again. The owner was not willing to entertain a partial refund, remedy with an alternate stylist at a reduced cost, or store credit towards a future service. The owner was very quick to respond which I did appreciate and the stylist was so nice. I will update this review if I do end up having a different outcome, but just wanted to share my experience, and I feel a little embarrassed to be wearing this hair color situation out in public! Honesty, I had a super disappointing experience here. I went in to get my color hair touched up. At a different salon, I had previously had a balayage done with baby lights (at least that was what it was to my knowledge). When I met with the hairdresser here, she seemed super confused and flustered by the color that was in my hair and the way it had been done. She told me that all my of hair had been foiled, but apparently that's not a full highlight? (Which is what I scheduled to be retouched.) My impression was that she got irritated with me about what I needed clearly would be taking a lot more of her time than expected. I was told on the phone that a full highlight touch up would be $100 and included toner. Apparently that was all kinds of wrong. The stylist told me that to retouch all of my color, it would be $175+, which I did not plan or budget for. So, I needed up telling her to just do a partial highlight touch up, which somehow was still $100. Then at the end, she told me I really needed toner and that would be an additional $30, again, an expense I didn't plan for. I said fine, go ahead, because she made me feel like it was an absolute necessity. So, she toned it and now it is MORE brassy. I told her I wanted a very light, slightly honeyed blonde. I now look like a copper pot. Furthermore, I don't feel like she did baby lights as I had asked, it looks splotchy in places, the new blonde doesn't even go all the way to the roots in some places, and she sent me out the door with wet hair. I am incredibly disheartened and I absolutely hate my hair. I was assured that "the color will lighten after a few washes," but I'm having a hard time believing that. If it does, I will update my review. As it stands right now, I would definitely not recommend this place. I thoroughly regret making and keeping this appointment and am further turned off from ever coloring my hair again in the future. I will not be going back to this salon. Update- The toner did NOT "brighten after a few washes." It was a hideous, coppery caramel color for 3 weeks. Now that the toner is completely washed out (as far as I can tell), I hate the color so much less, even though it still isn't the color I had wanted. read more

I'm new to Roanoke and have honestly been neglecting my hair through years of school and messy buns. After a lot of online searching for a salon and a stylist that I really wanted to do my hair I landed here. I set up an appointment with Kaley and sent her a few idea pictures to get started. When I arrived we went over what I wanted and any specifications I had. My end result is gorgeous and Kaley was able to give me some expert advice. She cut and colored my hair in a way that looks great down but also looks phenomenal up in a ponytail which is really important to me for work. She was such a pleasure to work with and has a wonderful personality. At the end of my visit, Kaley was able to tell me about the different products that the salon offered but nothing was pushed/ forced on me. If you'd like a group of stylists who are experienced and KNOW their business, go see the folks at Oliver's Twist. Cynthia Oliver is THE BEST! She will listen to what you want in a style, yet she will also help you towards what will actually work for your face shape, age, etc. A good stylist doesn't just blindly cut/style your hair. There should be a top-notch consult before they touch your head and you WILL get that type of service here. In addition, the place is warm and inviting. I would not recommend this salon... I had my hair done for my wedding and my hair ended up brassy and gray... In my years of getting my hair colored no one has ever had to color my hair twice or drench it in toner. When I left the salon my hair was suppose to lighten up in the brassy gray areas but only got worse. My fiance was not happy nor anyone who has ever seen my hair before this visit. I have beautiful hair and have always gotten compliments and asked who does my hair... I had moved and was not able to go to my regular stylist. The absolute worst my hair has ever looked. The price was outrageous as well... I will never go back to the stylist I had. I am sure they are not all that bad. Fun place to get your hair done. All the stylists seem very knowledgable in their craft and also very friendly. I was offered some delicious hot tea upon arriving and enjoyed relaxing in the reception area. Marla was my stylist and she did a great job with my color. I set an appointment with them two weeks in advance to prepare for my vacation. The hairdresser that I made an appointment with "Cory", calls me to confirm the day before. Then the day of, just one hour before my appointment, someone calls on his behalf saying he wouldn't be able to make it, and no other hairdressers are available. Supremely unprofessional.Avoid this saloon, if you have any sort of plans on a timeline. I will never try again, and hope that Cory enjoys his day off. read more

I have lived all over the states and and Betsy with Oliver's Twist is one of the best stylists I have had the pleasure of meeting. I drive over an hour to get my hair cut and colored once a month and it is so worth the time. Betsy is honest, current, efficient, and makes my hair look fantastic. I recently moved to the Roanoke area and decided to get my hair done at Olivers Twist. I should have read the reviews before I went. The first available appointment was with Monica. When I showed up for my appointment I stated I wanted to keep my hair color the same way but I just wanted to get my roots touched up. I told her I do not like brassy blonde and she said she would be able to do my hair similarly to what I had. She did a partial highlight on my hair. After she rinsed me I noticed my hair was quite a bit darker than when I walked in. Monica assured me it was because of the lighting and I was blonder than when I walked in. She took me outside and picked up a piece of my hair and said "See, look how blonde this is", then she said it would fade in a few days. My hair was an ash blonde. When I walked in my hair was a really light blonde, almost white in some highlights. This was completely different than when I walked in and not what we discussed. She then charged me $162 and let me leave the salon without offering to fix or any type of apology. I called the salon later on that day so Monica could fix my hair. The soonest they could get me in was almost a week later. I ended up speaking to the owner of the salon a few days later who assured me this was a fluke and Monica was amazing with blondes. I figured I would give it another shot. When I went back to get my hair fixed, Monica fixed it by just bleaching my hair and it was one flat color. She asked how I liked it and I told her it was blonder but there was no dimension in my hair like there was before. She agreed my hair had more dimension when I originally came in. I then asked if there was anything she could do and she refused. She told me I could book with someone else and not her. I left this salon and went directly to another salon who fixed my hair. All they needed to do was put a toner on my hair and it now has dimension and looks like it did before. All Monica needed to do was spend maybe 20 more minutes with me and all would have been fixed. I will never go back to this salon and I will not recommend it to anyone. read more
