Better fish and chips than even the coastal town shops that have won awards. Perfect fried cod, chips, mushy peas and a lovely pot of tea. We eat in here regularly often on spec during the day, but you do need to book for busy evenings. The parking can be a bit tricky. Most of the reviews on here seem quite old. Anyone unsure should check out the most recent reviews. It has changed a lot over the years. Even though it is often very busy (surely a good sign), the staff are always helpful and polite and the place very clean. Also family friendly. As to portion size, we consider them to be large and often can't finish a portion of chips. We are not strangers to fine dining but for fish and chips I would put Oliver's at the top of its league. Have been here multiple times but not since 2014. Friendly staff, nice ambiance and surroundings and quality cod and chips. Scampi is decent too. I got the scampi as the starter - 6 pieces of decent scampi but it was 6 quid I got the regular cod and chips for about 12 quid. For the price I would have hoped for 8 or even 10 pieces of scampi and a bigger piece of fish and more chips. No issues with the quality of the food. Pathetic portion sizes and even worse service.... Wow! How things have gone downhill here. Ordered 2 x large cod and received as per the pics. Ive been a customer of Olivers for over 35 years and the "large" that was served tonight was under half of what we usually get. Emailed a pic in and was then called by a member of staff who said it was normal to receive something of this size as large. They tried to claim that the fillets were thick when they were not! They refused to accept fault in any way and suggested I wasn't able to consider proportions! They also suggested that I had an opportunity to view the fillets to see if acceptable before buying! Why should I ever do this when I've no knowledge that Oliver's have decided to serve such awful portions. Glad that Fish'N"Chicken is closer to us and serves bigger portions...and better food. To add to the excitement, the fish was not only small but was dry and tasteless. I would very much suggested avoiding Olivers until they sort their act out! Awful! read more

This is by far the best fish and chip place that I have tried in the south. The fish is crispy on the outside and mouthwateringly succulent on the inside. The chips are deliciously chunky and fluffy on the inside. I've tried the curry sauce once which was pretty good and we nearly always get a saveloy which is always decent, though I feel you'd be hard pushed to find a place that could get that wrong. The food is alway, always piping hot, regardless of whatever time you go. The place is even open on a Sunday which is perfect if you've just been shopping and you're on your way home. The service is pretty quick and if you do have to wait then there's enough space in the shop so you don't feel like you're in the way. The take away also looks clean which is an added bonus. They also have a car park which is pretty handy. read more

When we went for a take away last night we had to park a long way away as the whole place was packed. We also had trouble getting inside to order as there were so many people waiting to collect their food. After about 40 minutes we left with what was probably the best fish and chips ever! Everything was freshly cooked and the portion sizes were very good. I heard a fair bit of moaning whilst we waited but to be frank if you want to be served quickly go to a fast food outlet. If you want really good fish and chips just be patient as it's well worth the wait. read more

Ah, what a place. Or should that be plaice? Olivers is a fair drive, to be honest; you really have to want fish and chips to make the trek out here. However, it's worth the effort. They constantly seem to be winning awards, and you can see why. Everything is delicious, the restaurant is clean and tidy, service is fast - just about perfect. As others have said, it is pretty expensive, but I still think it's worth the money. Oliver's has great fish and chips, and a good selection of other options. I may not be the best "fish and chips" expert, as I've only had them one other time...but if I were going to eat fish and chips regularly, I'd say this place would rank among my favourites. Fresh, not overly greasy or heavy, and just good food. The "brown sauce" and the French house wine was great too. There is also a lot of parking out front and it seems easy to get to. The only negative thing about it (4 instead of 5 stars) is that it was FREEZING inside. I ate with my coat on. read more

I live nearby so it's very handy for us. It's a really good chippy and never lets us down. Nice crisp chips, good fish and a really wide selection on the menu. It's not the cheapest though, which is why I gave 4 stars and not 5. read more

this place is on the outskirts of old basing so it is a bit of a trek for many people in basingstoke to go for takeout, we have visited here but find that because it is a bit out of the way our food is cold by the time we get home. it has won several awards in the past for being the best fish and chip shop in basingstoke but i think that they are a bit overated, the food is ok but you dont get large portions of chips and i find them to be a bit expensive, the place is very clean and tidy and the staff are very friendly but it does get very busy at times so expect a bit of a wait, overallif you are passing this place try their fish if you want a treat. read more

Olivers has changed over the years, and unfortunately not for the better. The quality has gone down, but the prices have gone up. Shame, as they've lost their crown as the best chippy in Basingstoke now. read more

Small potions, but very nice.

Chips were awful, fish was soggy and broken. Not sure what award they won in Basingstoke but it is clearly a dire place to eat.
