Fannie May Fine Chocolates - Over $1.00 apiece for little bite-size chocolates at Fanny May FINE Candies!!!

I lived in Chicago for ten years, right in the city, not out in some far-flung suburb…read more And so I walked the city streets and rode the city buses and trains A LOT! At that time, approx. 15 years ago, Fannie May's were easy to find in Chicago and I would go in and buy a small bag of chocolates fairly often. Fannie May (the ORIGINAL company) was always a Chicago based candy business. They went bankrupt sometime around 2003 and were auctioned-off to a Canadian company who planned to capitalize on the history and cachet of the Fanny May name... from Wikipedia... "After purchasing Fannie May (and Fanny Farmer) from Archibald Candy, Alpine Confections moved production to the company's Green, Ohio-based Harry London Candies, which had been purchased by Alpine Confections a year earlier, hoping to make a profit with the history of the confectionery's brand and reopened it in October 2004." The point of all this back story is the RIDICULOUSLY HIGH PRICES at Fannie May Fine Chocolates now! I can remember prices being about half of what they are now back in the day when I lived in Chicago. (see vintage catalog from 2003) Today I went in to the Fannie May Fine Chocolates in Granger and wanted a few Lemon Creams and Orange Creams. I looked and looked and COULD NOT FIND A PRICE ON THE CHOCOLATES OR A PRICE SIGN ON THE WALL; ARE THEY SO ASHAMED OF THEIR PRICES???! (though they did have an price sign for their ice cream treats). I finally asked the lady what are their candy prices and she said $29.95 a pound!!! NOT A TYPO!!! $29.95 A POUND!!! WHAT, DOES THIS STUFF CURE CANCER???! I actually laughed after she said this, not to be rude, but because I literally could not believe it! I was already in the store and I had a craving for Lemon Creams (they can't get Orange Creams right now, they are bursting apart for no reason!!!...that's what the lady told me!). I bought four Lemon Creams and my total before the sale discount was over $4.00 dollars! That's OVER $1.00 per piece of candy!!! A LITTLE piece the size of a small peanut!!! The Fannie May company we all grew-up with is gone- and now we have Fannie May FINE Chocolates! I guess we're supposed to believe the word FINE makes these candies worth an almost 100% price increase!!! (see catalog from 2002-2003 season) So, I still like the candy (VERY MUCH!) but, the 2 stars is for the new company that is clearly only interested in rank profiteering off the decades of loyal customers who built the ORIGINAL Fannie May Candies, and I won't be spending much money with THEM.

This is a clean wonderful place to get chocolates with a wonderful staff!…read more I was coming in to get two boxes of chocolates, one for each grandmother, and needed help getting an assortment. The manager Sarah was kind and polite, helping pick out one box full of nut based chocolates and one box of creams. They where busy but she managed to take care of me quickly without me feeling rushed. The grandmothers loved their candy and it didn't cost me as much as I thought I would pay for gourmet candies. I will be shopping here again! Thanks Sarah and team!

We had our first experience with the Farmers Market a few weeks ago. I was so hopeful that this…read morewould become a new regular destination to visit with my kiddos. The outside in my honest opinion does not give a welcoming, farmers market vibe. It reminds me of old sheds or long warehouses that have been converted, albeit that is most likely what it was. However there is not really a specific entrance that I found, just multiple doorways that may or may not be marked as entrance doors. Inside, we found the market to be basically a very large rectangular loop of vendors booths. There is lots and lots of crafts to look at. The produce appeared to be on the higher side so we passed on buying. There was a wonderful lavender vendor with very high grade essential oils at very good prices that we did purchase. There is wonderful English Tea and food items which were splendid. ( might be a reason I return). Additionally there was a Hungarian bakery vendor that had wonderful items to taste, they were very traditional and delicious. We noticed a small cafe or diner but did not stop, it looked dated but had customers enjoying their orders. If I had to give any feedback as a consumer to the owners, it would be to invest in better parking, signage and updating of your building. The vendors that were present ( empty booths were noted) seem to love their businesses and would benefit from the updates!

Your senses will be captivated by many sights, sounds and smells of local farmers bringing their goods to this market. Vendors and customers come from far and near to sell and purchase goods from the many stalls that are owned and operated by families.
