On the Victoria St side of Bridge Road, it's a smallish cafe with a lovely but simple fit out. Staff are super friendly, even if you are just in for a takeaway coffee. They use Industry Beans and their brews are pretty good! I've only been once for food and had the beans fish and it was delish with just the right amount of spice and chilli. The husband also enjoying his pancakes that came with figs, maple and walnuts - yum! Prices are on the pricier side of cafe fare, but if it's good quality, I think it's justifiable. The salads and sandwiches and sweets in the cabinet look very tempting also. I'll be back to try more!

Service was friendly but a bit aloof - the waiter couldn't remember who ordered what dish, and one of the orders were taken incorrectly. The coffee was good, chai latte average. I got the smashed avocado with harissa which was a very generous amount of the avo, slightly disproportionate to the amount of toast, though it allowed me to share some with my friend who didn't receive her avocado on the side. Flavour profile slightly off, needs a bit of acidity to balance the avo mix. The mushroom dish with the runny eggy hole brioche looked lovely, as did the homemade baked beans. The special of the day Nutella hot cake with cookie dough and ice cream (my teeth ached from reading the menu!) was shared between 5 of us - which ended up being the right amount. Some interesting interpretations of brekky staples here.

One point I did not enjoy so much about this cafe; when I walked in I wasn't greeted. One woman was wearing an apron was standing near the front and was speaking to someone very casually and just looked me up and down. I know from experience that if you work somewhere with uniform/apron etc. It is common curtesy to remove that identifying item so that customers know you are on break or not going to be serving them. Otherwise there is an expectation that you will in the least acknowledge them entering your cafe as you stand by the entry. Despite this, I seated myself and it took a few mins for someone to come over and awkwardly ask if I'd been helped yet.

In my experience, buying a coffee from a new place can be one of those harrowing first-world problems where you never know what you're going to end up with. Sometimes they burn the milk, sometimes they use really bad coffee, sometimes, they put too much coffee in, or worse yet, not enough. I have mine with two sugars. Some times you ask for those two sugars, and in ten minutes time when you're sitting in traffic, after swearing at that mongrel that just cut you off for the second time since you turned onto this stupid road, you take a sip from your now cool-enough-to-sip coffee and discover that there is NO EFFING SUGAR IN THIS EFFING COFFEE! Fortunately, Cafe Vanilli did the right thing, put together a nice cappuccino and all was right with the world.

Service isn't everything, but it makes a notable difference when it's done well and seamlessly. We had the Eggs Florentine and Mixed Mushroom, and both were delightful. The food came out quickly, and portions were generous. The eggs were combined with a Salmon ragout and the dish was creamy, well balanced and full of flavour. The Mixed Mushroom was a revelation - mushrooms served with creamed mushroom, truffle oil and cheese with hashbrown balls. Lots of complex flavours for a brunch dish, but again balanced incredibly well. Love the place. We'll be back.
