Gorgeous space tucked away in Eltham! Second home is a spacious art gallery cafe with loads of natural light and extensive food menu! Stopped in for a quick breakfast on my way to an appointment and I don't want to leave! Their Almond milk magic was the caffeine hit I needed and Noisette Fruit toast served with home made jams is delicious. Whilst there's more to Second Home than Cheeseburgers - it has an artisan bakery and art gallery with photography features on the day - it would be remiss of me not to try a staple! The beef was medium, beautifully juicy and tasty, with lashings of cheese melting from the sides. A hint of pickle lasted with each mouthful and the bun was deliciously crispy and sweet. The accompanying frites were perfectly crisp and warm, the coffee excellent. I wonder if perhaps the price point was a little high, but certainly a terrific local find worth checking out! read more

On a semi busy day the staff failed to impress and the lunch menu was pretty disappointing. The place came highly recommended and gets 2 Stars this time as I will give it another shot (it shows potential). We were seated by the friendly host and put on a small table (3 Adults and 1 Infant), and told that he would bring a high chair for us. He walked away, look at the computer for a few minutes (I was watching, holding my son waiting for him to bring a high chair) and then he went and served the next group of people waiting at the door. So I proceeded to look for a high chair myself and bring it to our already small table. The next waitress came over and was surprised we had no menus, we said "No, we don't have" - she replied with "Did you get seated, or did you seat yourself". Easy to understand the confusion, but doesn't make customers feel great. We ordered a Meatball Piadini which was $12.90, looked like a badly toasted wrap with average quality meat inside and an extra $3 for some green leaves on the side (salad). I got the grilled cheese toasty which cost me $17 and was not much better than a ham and cheese toasty I could make at home. My sister on the other hand got the Lamb Gnochi which tasted as good as it looked. Some 1 out of 3 ain't bad but overall wasn't a great experience. Hoping they impress on the next visit! read more

This is my favourite cafe on the far north east side. The reviews for Second Home state that it is housed in leafy Eltham, but in actual fact it is surrounded by an industrial estate, but don't let its location put you off- it's worth the drive! This cafe is housed in an interesting 1970's building which makes you wonder what its previous use was. All the food that I've tried is amazing. I recommend the herb folded eggs, k-hole smoothie and a Matcha Maiden latte. There is always a great selection of cakes and pastries, including amazing looking home made musk sticks. There is also fresh bread, flowers and other skin care products available as a take home purchase. Parking can be an issue on the weekends. read more

Phoned a week earlier to book for a table of 12 and was told no bookings could be made so waited a hour and half for a table on a Sunday. Eventually got our table and went to order. One of our party wanted scrambled eggs instead of the poached that was part of their dish but was told it couldn't be swapped, but you could buy a extra order of scrambled eggs! The $17 toasted sandwich was very basic for the price. There is a very limited lunch menu. Boxes of tea for purchase on the front counter were out of date. What a find! Everything just works. The decor is modern yet there is a lovely homely atmosphere and there is plenty of room between tables - you don't feel you're on top of each other and you're sharing your conversation with the rest of the room. Staff are attentive but not intrusive. The breakfast menu is very generous. I stuck with my usual staple - poached eggs and added herb tomatoes - delicious and my daughter had the vegi option (can't remember the exact name) which came with avocado, halloumi cheese and mushrooms which I ended up sharing because the portion sizes are substantial. Coffee was spot on. Definitely worth the drive if you're not a local like us. read more
